Let's face it, the country is just too damn big, with too few people. Unless you've travelled to the area, you probably don't know what it's like. Western Canada is clueless about Eastern Canada and vice versa, and they're both clueless about Northern Canada.

How about a reply instead of a mod-down ? The Matrix was neither a unique, nor original movie. The dialog is laughable, and there are as many or more stupid things in that movie as in any other piece of Hollywood drivel. It's been a while since I last watched that piece of garbage (I don't own it), so I can't list the product placements from memory, but who didn't know that Nokia produced the "cool" cell phone props ? Regarding the "formula" which produced this movie, the ONLY objective difference is the target audience: geeks. You were all conned, sucked into buying a product and thinking it was great. How oddly appropriate.

  4. Re:Not sure I agree with his thinking on Credit and Free Software · · Score: 1

I agree entirely. Free software became a powerful force because it is free (as in freedom). Now people are continually trying to use it to push their own personal causes - RMS, the anti-drm camp, etc, and likewise with this. Trying to make rock stars out of people might net us a bit more cash in the short term, but it's ultimately a frivolous exercise. Linus has had the right vision from the start.

There's enough bandwidth on kazaa alone to push the RIAA right off the internet. Let the RIAA launch their attacks so their will be political support to get them. We can attach DoS programs to p2p clients (political spyware?).

I couldn't disagree more. The government should avoid regulating information transfer between third parties as much as possible, and I think this principle trumphs any inherent right to privacy. Of course, government uses of information have to be restricted to what is neccesary and reasonable, without being overbearing.

Yet another reason to switch to a Macintosh : protection from crappy music.

That's quite disappointing to hear. I'm in BC, and they pretty much have a monopoly here too. I haven't had any complaints about their service (local, long distance, and ADSL) so far, except that the entire concept of "long distance" is a bunch of crap nowadays.

Buy an NEC Accusync 95F. It's a 19" display, and it goes for about $340 cdn. Between myself and my extended family we have five of them, all excellent. My cousin vouched for them initially; his work had been buying lots of large monitors, and this is one type that NEVER had a problem. The only irritating feature is that its only 75Hz at 1600x1200 - a little low. Its 100Hz at 1152x864. The display quality is excellent, and the colours are good.

What society are you living in?

Good reply. Of course companies have a right to hold trade secrets, but they should be responsible for maintaining that secrecy (for example, by disclosing it only to parties which sign a contract). I think that if someone discovers your trade secret independently, then too bad, it's not a secret anymore. Laws such as the DMCA criminalize this sort of independent investigation and development.

And my point was not limited to technology and scientific progress either. The legal system also requires public disclosure and peer review to prevent and correct abuses and injustices, yet we see this incredible emphasis on secrecy from the US executive branch. Secret immigration hearings, indefinite detentions as a "material witness" based on secret evidence, secret commissions drafting important public policy (Cheney's energy task force anyone ?). This cuts to the core of what a free society IS. Either these trends will be reversed, or we will eventually have a tolitarian society.
