"Remember, you don't say port 80 to go to Slashdot. Why not default to the SRV record (then port 80 for backwards-compatibility) unless the user specifies otherwise?"
Not if you learn it properly - ie you learn the C side of it. Any idiot can learn the high level fluffy OO stuff. Get the same idiot to learn about pointer arithmetic or functions pointers or pre processor macros or casting issues or 101 other C gotchas and its another story entirely. Its the same story with people who claim to "know" C++ when in actual fact all the know is how to use "new", "delete" and maybe the STL and know jack shit about the in depth complexities of the language.
"So while might be a barrier for Java developers, it's not that high."
Only if you don't bother learning the C side of the language and just stick with the high level OO stuff.
Did you learn about pointer arithmetic? Low level memory allocation? Unions? Bitfields? Function pointers? Pre processor macros? Issues with casting on non aligned word boundaries?
Don't be an ass. Using ports allows someone to set up an ah-hoc server for testing or whatever easily. The last thing they want to do is dick about having to update DNS's bastard child before they can access it from the browser.
And that they have it to hand when they're doing the transfer. I suppose you could say that anyone who's doing internet banking is likely to have one but even so, it seems a bit presumptuous.
"But not coding in your free time also shows balance"
Not really. Theres a huge difference between someone who spends maybe a few free hours a week doing his own thing learning some new techniques or programming some fun thing for himself or whatever, and the kind of basement dwelling hermit who really has no social skills or life outside the computer screen. The first person is the type you should hire, the 2nd is the type you should usually avoid.
Otherwise you might as well say that Ferrari should only hire race drivers who have no real interest in driving or airlines should only hire pilots who have no interest in flying outside of sitting in a 737 pilot seat monitoring systems for 3 hours.
... in computers. Isn't that worth something when weighing up job candidates? Sorry , but if this guy doesn't realise that someone who is interested in what they do as a day job will probably put in more effort that someone who's just a clock watching for-the-money type then frankly he's an idiot. This rule applies to ANY profession, not just programming.
Nuclear reactors are not only a good method for generating electricity which the electrical systems of the ship but via the electricity can also power ion engines and engines that work against planetary magnetic fields. And last time I looked pulse propulsion didn't use a nuclear reactor. Try and get your facts straight.
If anyone were to even suggest it you'd get the usual hippies waving their stupid banners outside NASA HQ. NASA had enough hassle launching various robotic probes, eg cassini, with small RTGs abort because of the usual It'll-kill-us-all if the launch fails morons.
... then so would earth when it formed so why do we need to look to the asteroids to "seed" this planet with water? All the solar system bodies apparently condensed from the same dust cloud so I don't see this need to discover where earths water came from. It was already here , albeit probably as steam.
"It should be inclusive with ideas being bounced backwards and forwards between everyone in the team, including management"
Yeah right. Where do you work , some fluffy web company where everyone walks around in slacks and tiedyes , plays pool 3 hours a day with their managers and gets a vote on company policy? Sorry son, in real companies it doesn't work like that. They pay you money , you do what they tell you or you take a hike. If you don't accept those terms don't accept the job.
When I worked at a large bank a few years back I had to write a network library that would send trades and receive stock market info. Performance was the MOST critical factor of the whole project. Microseconds mattered. In the end it was written in C++ (though to be honest it was mostly C code) on linux. AFAIK its still there.
"Huh? How is this a troll? Can somebody please explain it to me?"
Someone let the clueless pre-teen moderators out into an adult discussion again where they modded down any post they didn't understand. Which was pretty much all of them.
... this kid has really given power to the people!
Not.
Why does the current generation of kids seem to think just about everything should be free no matter how little it costs? Are government bodies not entitled to charge a nominal fee for services rendered?
I'm sick and tired of the attacks on everyone who might go against the juvenile group-think on this website and actually feel some of the things microsoft produce have something to offer the world and would like to extend it.

With hard copy disc based games you can sell them on to friends or a shop once you're done. A bit more difficult with a download - people will just want it for free and what shop will buy a memory stick off you that may or may not work and may or may not have viruses etc embedded on it?
Serious question - I have no idea what their beef is. Is it yet more paranoid control of the apps , even apps running in a VM , that can run on their system or is some sort of security issue , or is it just sour grapes?
I do watch TV. However what I haven't done is fork out $$$ for a piece of jewellry for the Oooo-shiny! crowd known as a Mac Mini.
I work in IT and the last thing I want to do when I get home is arse about with a computer just to watch a friggin TV show. Pressing the TV on button followed by a channel button is as complex as I want when I'm tired.
"fuck off - at least with the insults."

Extra complexity for little gain.

No , didn't think so.

If you let your kids take over your entire free time then your not doing yourself or your kids any favours.
I'm sure brain surgeons read medical journals and go to symposiums outside of their normal working hours.

The test ban treaty covers nuclear weapons in space, not nuclear reactors.

"The length of the working day is strictly 7 hours only and it's frowned upon if you work longer. There are no code monkeys here. "
Just a bunch of lazy sods by the sound of it.
"I have high standards for myse"
Heh , translation: "I want an easy ride where I can coast along and not do much work"
Parent poster obviously has a lot more experience of real life work than the teenage moderators around here!

Thats probably because you're 12 andyour pocket money isn't much more. Now go do your homework.

Not.

Now get off my lawn!

Blah blah.
Give it a rest you tedious FSF troll.

So you're going to have 10 apps that all require a different server OS? I don't think so. At least not if the CTO has a clue.
