... it being partly a microsoft research project and all. They wouldn't be trying to imply anything about Linux would they , or perish the thought , be unwilling to embarras themselves if Windows could *still* be rooted even after this solution was installed?
Some of us prefer brevity and we don't or can't all use IDEs. If something like strcmp is too difficult for you to understand perhaps you should stick to VB.
On all those situations you or your car will probably be video'd on CCTV or seen by someone and couple that with the time that you did whatever it was you'll be found pretty quick.
... that theres really no such thing as anonymity online. If someone wants to find out who you are then eventually they will. Which obviously is a double edged sword - if its someone protesting against an oppressive government or suchlike then anonymity is prized , however if its some spiteful little teen using it to fire unpleasent potshots at people he/she doesn't like then I suspect most people will care little if their identity is revealed and most will probably be quite happy with that decision.
Punishment is there to punish. Why is this such a difficult concept for you people? Theres more to justice than rehabilitating the criminals. If someone attacked a member of my family I'd want to bastard to suffer before some hand wringing bleeding heart tries to re-adjust him to social norms.
Unfortunately here in a number of countries in europe the judiciary has swallowed the liberal rehabilitation BS hook line and sinker. They and the politicians seem to believe that criminals are all just misunderstood little angels who if only given a chance would shine and all become rocket scientists or whatever pathetic fucking fantasy they have in mind this week. Punishment is seen as a dirty word by this liberal elite and so we get these sorts of absurd situations and if they can blame the scums behaviour on his genetics then even more reason not to give him some nasty punishment. Its not his fault after all, right?
Its a prime example of the state completely ignoring the wishes of the people.
People who spend their lives looking for exploits and holes in a system whether white or black hat are only doing it so they can puff their egos by getting one over the codes original author and showing the world how l337 they are , so no great surprise when said egos bloat out in arguments.
Command confirmation isn't a solution - how do you pick the correct command - best of 3? 4 out of 5? If theres consistent interference it not only shows a design flaw but also command confirmation will just give fake reassurance because all it will do is reduce the probability of it happening again , not rule it out entirely. The problem needs to be fixed at source with some sort of CRC check made on the command and if it fails the aircraft is grounded as soon as possible.
Surely it would have been better to fix whatever caused the corruption in the first place than inplement that band-aid style fix? Corrupted digital commands to me says serious wiring or electronics issues.
The fact that modern bacteria can survive in those conditions says nothing about whether life could arise or even evolve there. Its a bit like assuming that because cockroaches can survive high doses of radiation there's potential for a 6 legged lifeform to arise inside nuclear reactors.
Wouldn't surprise me if this does turn out to be true and not just a statistical anomaly then insurance companies will probably ask for a genetic test if they can get away with it and raise the premium if you have this genetic marker.
Being stuck in a job you don't like is better than being in no job earning no money and with a mortgage and maybe a family to pay for. Moving into an entirely new career is risky plus theres the added downside of you having to start from the bottom again with the resulting pay cut. Not a problem if you're in your 20s , not so great if you're in your 30s or older.
I don't hate my job but neither do I like it much either , but I just look on it as something I have to do to earn money to live my real life outside work. And it could be worse - I doubt rubbish collectors enjoy their job - at least I have a safe comfy office to sit in even if it is boring work.
Sometimes you just have to put up with the tedium of life - and remember that the grass isn't always greener elsewhere , it may just look that way from a distance.
...all sold to beacon by default , plenty sold with a googlable default password (or none at all) which they never prompt the user to change , encryption - even WEP - switched off by default.
Etc.
It took me all of 2 minutes to get into my mums neighbours home network via their belkin wifi router.
And yes , I did tell them how to secure it. And they ignored me. What can you do?
"just recently I found a nasty handle leak that resulted in iTunes consuming several thousand handles a day and not releasing them, I managed to get it to just shy of 30,000 within a week."
Most people when they find software that has a memory leak just reboot it from time to time. Why leave it running for so long if it uses up so many resources? Boot it when you need it then shut it down. Its hardly critical infrastructure.
They had some experimental vehicle that used a joystick. Upshot was that the joystick is NOT a good way to control a car due to its small range of movement. Doing subtle manouvering was a right PITA. Sure , technology may improve things but frankly a steering wheel gives perfect feedback for what it does and if something ain't broken...
"Not true. The BIOS controls the fans and such even when the OS is running."
Err no, it doesn't. The BIOS isn't some seperate autonomous entity running in the background on some special CPU reserved for it - its just a bunch of routines the OS can call if it wants. And no modern OS does - they all have their own 32/64 bit drivers.
"I do agree that the parent's argument was stupid; he was just rattling off C keywords hoping to make Obj-C programming for the iphone seem as difficult and obtuse as C can be when you use it for extremely low level code."
Jesus, if you think what I listed only applies to extremely low level code then you're a clueless gimp. Stick with your hand holding IDEs and 4GLs mate where you probably feel safe. Btw, you did a nice job yourself of "rattling off" some keywords yourself. "hardware registers" , "ordering and packing" , oooooh , impressive. Ain't wikipedia great?

How exactly do you think you'll be able to type in a URL in mandarin or russian on west european keyboard?

Just a couple of reasons it might be a rubbish (ho ho) job.

What brainless clod would leave a laptop with sensitive data on it lying around in a hotel room anyway, encrypted disk or not?
This is a non story - as everyone has known for decades , someone with access to the machine can do what they like. And they probably will.
Its funny the levels kiddy porn file sharers have to go to these days to stay 1 step ahead of the police.

And how often do A380s take a 90 degree bend in a couple of seconds at cruise speed?

Aw bless , he's got one of his little friends to post. How touching.
He? That would be you you mean. No one else would be reading a thread this deep so long after the original story.
