"I worked on drivers for broadcast video editing and effects"
Umm , that hardly sounds like what most people consider a "driver". A driver is software that directly interfaces with and controls hardware , not some plug-in that provides graphics effects. If you said you actually wrote the graphics driver for a video card or input driver for a drawing tablet I might be more impressed.
"I can count on one hand the number of times I've had a problem with Firefox that would have been solved by it being in its own process."
Really? Well I would need an abacus the size of france to count the number of times it would have solved a problem for me. Firefox + flash are a well known crash/lockup combination on linux and of course since the browser is threaded ALL instances lock up.
They only sell a lot because of the fuel efficiency - no other reason. As soon as that financial advantage disappears watch diesel cars disappear as fast as they appeared.
Its only lazyness that prevents manutacturers adding lock-up to all their auto boxes so the torque converter is only used on moving off and at slow speeds. Putting drive through the TC for the whole speed range is absurd - it should be used in the same way as a clutch on a manual.
I can't see a mini sub being anything other than a leisure craft either. Its not like you can mount a trident missile on the back or torpedo shipping with it.
Sure its for recreation but you could travel in it and you wouldn't get as wet as a jetski which seem to be pretty popular even though they're little more than a leisure vehicle. And unless that mini sub can do 20mph under the water (year right) it won't anything like as much of a buzz as this machine.
"Personally, having not served in the military, I can not comprehend how a pilot ( and I've always wanted to be a fighter pilot mind you ) or any other military personal can actually take someone elses life"
If someone is about to kill you if you don't kill them first I suspect its rather easy frankly. Having a clear conscience won't do you much good if you've just been turned in a ball of greasy smoke.
I know whan my dad retired he was bored out of his mind since he loved the job he did. If he could have stayed on working I know he would have done. Plus just because you hit 65 doesn't mean you suddenly arn't interested in earning money. I don't see working beyond 65 as a problem personally unless the person is unwell or unfit to continue in the job.
And of course , if you're a COBOL coder you'll probably still be in demand until the day you go face down in your keyboard (or should that be punched card stack?)
"So I bought a top of the line camera ($2500) to catch the action and turn it into the police."
You're braver than I would be. The crims only have to spot you taking their picture or one of the "friends" in the police let them know who took it and you and your house will be getting more attention than is healthy.
I know its fashionable to see the UK government as a bunch of closet dictators , but really this is more about money - or lack of. Rather than it being the beginning of the UKs version of the Stasi its simply a case of the government not wanting to cough up cash for real police so they hope they can fob us off with cut price gimmicks like this. They've already given us the Community Support Officer (the plastic police) which is effectively a policeman with limited powers - and crucially a lower salary , but by getting the curtain twitcher types to report on people they don't have to pay any salary.
Of course what will happen to a private civilian with no backup or weapons of any sort trying to stop or ticket some 250lb drunk lout with attitude chucking his beer can over a fence is anyones guess...
If the decay rate of caesium or whatever element they use in atomic clocks these days is effected by the sun surely this means all timing systems used everywhere on earth are unknowingly being effected by this?? Who knows what knock on effects this has already had if this is the case.
"Who am I, you, anyone to morally judge somebody else's morals/ethics? "
People are judged by the society they live in. If you don't judge anyone and therefor let them do what they please you have anarchy. Having boundaries is vital to the functioning of any society. Also its rather interesting that a lot of people who would love anarchy and chaos only would want it so long as it didn't effect them - ie its a selfish belief - but as soon as say a gang came in and trashed their house and stole all their belongings it would be another matter - suddenly they find their sense of right and wrong and ptotest accordingly. But then hypocrisy is a dearly held principal of armchair left wing "radicals"
Society defines what right or wrong is. The dividing line may change over time and between different socities but that doesn't mean theres no such thing as either.

It won't if the whole X-server has locked up.
Shared memory is so simple a child could use it and pipes lend themselves quite nicely to multiplexing.

Actually I live in europe. Diesels are not quiet.

Torque yes, fuel efficient yes, quiet? You must be joking. Even the best diesel still sounds like a tractor compared to a petrol engine.

Go find out what russian oligarchs spend their money on.

"The US loading gauge is similar to the European one, and I'm sure it would be perfectly possible."
Depends where. Some of the loading gauges in the US are huge with vertical double stacked containers on wagons being commonplace.
And a hell of a lot higher - in fact I think they're larger than even the largest north american loading gauge.
So it gets drunk on dark energy , trips over a neutrino and falls down a black hole where no one can see it?

Umm , literacy is reading. Whats that got to do with speaking?
Given the population of India is over a billion and Hindi is the national language you're well out. Almost all indians speak it as a 2nd language.
The number of hindi speakers is probably 4 times that.
They don't release to the largest markets but the most useful ones for testing.
Besides , lets be honest - the spanish speaking world isn't exactly renowned for its cutting edge expanding IT industry.
