    Are the costs of the extra fuel required for landing plus recovery and refurbishment of the engines and control systems (I assume the rocket body is scrap) less than simply building a new one? I guess it must be if not now at least at some point in the future but I'd like to see some figures.

    I don't trust many governments. But I do trust in basic physics and the impossibility of virtually every country in the world with a science program being in on some conspiracy to fake a robotic mars mission that most of the public frankly don't give a shit about anyway. It would be harder to fake than actually go there.

    He's at one extreme, you're at the other. As with most things in life the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Competition is good in some areas - eg supermarkets bringing prices down or car performance - and co-operation is better in others such as blue sky research. Life is far more nuanced than either of you seem to appreciate.

    I'd have thought for a spacecraft control system it would be one of the first pieces of code you'd test! Its equivalent to putting a car into Drive and finding yourself going backwards!

    And there's your problem right there. What would you rather be - a "bad" engineer who can still pay the mortgage/rent, or a righteous engineer who's now looking for work and could be on the street in a few months if doesn't get a new job?

    ... at least here in London is that a lot of them now are run by not very bright egotistical and/or criminal (other than just illegal broadcasting) individuals who don't give a stuff about anyone else on the band. They'll cause interference to or even stomp over legit and other pirate stations alike. A minority of them are also a front for other far worse criminal activities.

    I wondered something similar when they kept saying the singularity in a black hole has zero size. Well something with no dimentions doesn't exist so how can it still have a gravitational field? Unless because time is so slowed inside a black hole relative to outside that from an outside observers point of view the singularity essentially never forms.

    There are always garages around who'll look the other way on emissions if someone slips them some money. There's a bloke up my road who manages to get his almost scrap transit through the MOT every year. There's no way it would pass legally.

    Not impossible - just very expensive and it would hit fuel economy. Which then defeats the point of using diesel in a car.

    That used to be the case - but modern turbo petrols can produce high torque at low rpm now. Not sure how that would scale to a truck sized engine however. The one issue with petrol is flammability - trucks carry a HUGE quantity of fuel in an external tank and if that punctured in a crash - well, you can imagine. Also certain industrial sites won't allow petrol or LPG engines on site due to flammability issues.
