The folks at RvB are smart... they limit the number of connections. It may take a while to get a connection, but when you get one, your d/l speed is good.
A lot of them use linux for render farms... at least with linux, you don't have to pay licensing based on the number of processors. I know that Maya comes with 9999 render licenses, so linux makes sense.

Dreamworks uses mostly linux boxes... as a matter of fact MOST of the big 3d shops use linux for their render farms and production (think about the licensing required for 1000 windows boxen...)

They have an apt repository for the things that they have written (adminmenu, and the like). Otherwise, apt-get.org is your friend.
