Thing is, this is not a new service and I'm not getting it from Verizon. I'm getting it from Monet Mobile.

    ...but not for long...

The service is fantastic- I can't imagine a better product. The truly sad thing is that Monet Mobile (www.monetmobile.com) is going bankrupt and shutting me down on April 1, at which point I'm going to have to pay the Verizon fees or go back to wired internet... (sigh)

Just because it isn't difficult or interesting to you, doesn't mean it can't make me pick up a soldering iron and go to work. Or look for _other_ interesting things to do with old motherboards.

    Dear Michael's a Jerk,
I for one (and i don't think i'm alone) do not think this is "ool, but a Waste of Time".

repurposing parts from old motherboards to make new test equipment IS cool and IS NOT a waste of time. Just because you can't produce a thousand, or even two, doesn't make it not worthwhile; it's silly to think that Tesla or Turing or whoever should never have made anything, because they could only make one.

and just because something *might* be damaged DOES NOT mean it isn't worth a little hacking!
I'm certain that many slashdotters have gotten tons of use out of "broken" and "useless" throwaway parts from old machines. I know I have.

It's tiring to see every cool hack posted on slashdot be berated by people who don't think it's worthwhile. That attitude has nothing to do with the experimental mindset of hacking, and does nothing to construct anything new. This person did something new *and* shared the knowledge with us! Many, many inventions have come from tireless "frustration".

  19. Art Art Art on Crushing Experience · · Score: 1
I'm sorry. Somone probably thought this was a great deep and meaningfull peice of modern art...but blahh. Big deal. The problem with art nowadays is that artists think they are great philosophers, thinks and movers and shakers of the modern world. See in classic times, when they made real art, artists knew what they were. Entertainers.

I don't think "real art" is comprised of silly classical paintings and marble sculpture. Real art isn't entertainment. TV is entertainment. This kind of statement is like saying "The only good things to ever happen happened in the past. Now it's all crap, and all fake.". I find it really hard to believe the only good things that have/will happen already have.
Modern artists are experimenting with new media and new modes of communication. Perhaps this experiment with a webserver as the media is a bit primitive, and obvious, but let me inform you that "Old Master" Paintings, Theatre/Opera and Dance didn't happen overnight either. It took a great deal of time to develop these arts into workable, enjoyable, communicating entertainment.

Like everybody else, artists are exploring possibilities with computer media. I don't think anyone here would be brash enough to tell me that the Osborne was the greatest computer ever, or that command line interfaces are for everyone. It seems a real shame for the "Nerd" community to show so much mistrust and anger towards an art developed around their obsession... Isn't this the same community who asked if games could be art, or if code could be beautiful? Let's support these art forms/medias in their infancy instead of being destructive in our criticism.

Finally, I think that the comments calling this a "waste" are incorrect. Just because YOU want the server doesn't mean it's a waste. I'm certain you don't feel that anyone else's wants should dictate your actions. If i feel like buying a computer and smashing it, SO BE IT! It is the right of the artist (and everyone else, too) to do what they wish with their posessions.
