  1. Old Laws Are Now Re-examined, but ManBearPig... on Researchers Re-Examine Second Law of Thermodynamics · · Score: 0

...is declared to be a settled issue upon which no further debate is necessary and immediate action is needed to SAVE THE WORLD!!!

    Pffft.

If I had a buck for every time I've carried my umbrella into work because the weatherman said that storms were coming in the afternoon only to tote it back to the car at the end of the day across a bone-dry parking lot, I'd have quite a few dollars. They can't predict the weather with any reliability 9 HOURS into the future, but we're supposed to panic because they've ascertained with irrefutable accuracy that the Earth will stifle in 50 YEARS unless we control ManBearPig NOW.

    Uh, no.

  2. Digital filming may make HD formats irrelevant. on First Blu-ray Disc Reviews Posted Online · · Score: 0

The key factor in DVD quality is the transfer. Compression and filtering can make hash of the best source material, but done properly, the quality can be outstanding.

I watched "Find Me Guilty" - the Sidney Lumet film starring Vin Diesel - last night and was astounded at the clarity and detail of picture. It was superior to many broadcast HDTV shows I watch and it made me wonder if the secret is to limit audio track and extras on the feature discs and just pack it with bits. I know this is how Superbit is supposed to work, but this disc was just crazy with detail.

If they could make standard DVDs ALL look this good, no one would care about the format wars and rebuying their favorite movies.

  3. Re:Time spent with games is not spent socializing. on DOA Coming to the Theater Near You · · Score: 0

The years from 3 to 33 are years when people learn to socialize. For example, that's when people learn to deal with the problems of a sexist society. In the later years, people learn to accept more responsibility and to be managers and other leaders of society. They learn how to know and express their own needs and to think about and satisfy the needs of others at the same time.

People who fill many hours playing games don't spend those same hours learning about themselves and others, and the world.

If this stream of whiny mewling is indicative of what a life spent "socializing" looks like, I say GIVE ME MORE PEOPLE WHO PLAYED VIDEOGAMES INSTEAD OF VISUALLY INSPECTING THEIR COLONS!!!

"Whine whine whine...games are sexist....bitch bitch bitch...we need to sing 'Kumbuyah'...blah-blah-woof-woof..." Spare me.

I just got a 2405 about a month ago and it's a slick bit of kit alright. I'm going to hook my Xbox 360 to the RGB inputs along with my PC.

The only naff detail is the brightness: It'll give you a tan if you don't dial it down to zero and then back off the brightness and contrast in your display driver control panel.

Note: This applies to the DVI connector only; analog hookup allows for tweakage of everything via the monitor's controls. DVI only allows for brightness to be adjusted.
