  1. Roll your own! on How Configurable Should a Desktop User Interface be? · · Score: 1

A thought I've always entertained is: why not make the features of your window manager much like your kernel? In -theory-, you can modify source to optimize a window manager for your needs, but seriously - how many people are going to slag through that? Give your window manager a nifty utility that lets you see -everthing- that goes into the window manager (not a few weak options like Windows' Add/Remove Programs), and let the user play with it. I mean, let's say you want to build a box for your little brother, and he's like, 8 years old. He's not going to need, say, a graphing calculator, fractal generator, packet sniffer, etc. (maybe a -few- 8 year olds do!). Nor will he likely be playing with settings too much. If you can tailor his gui to be simple, unbloated, and quick, you've got the best possible gui for the user. That's likely to be the best answer. Few things work universally well for everyone. ::este::

Can someone kick CLIT in his digital balls and quiet him up? I am vehemently against suppression of freedom of speech, but conversely I think people have a right not to listen, especially if the material is potentially offensive. Slashdot provides a discussion forum for users to discuss thier reactions to other user's posts. That's great, and I love it. Let's keep it that way. ::este::

  4. Ruination... on DoC to Extend ICANN's Control of IANA · · Score: 2, Interesting

It seems ICANN is headed the way of so many other organizations that have forged a "special" relationship wih the givernment. Inevitably, we've all seen how this type of government-backed exclusivity causes the organization to ge just plain lazy, since they're not under pressure to perform if they're under contract. Why the DoC's huge interest in securing this setup? I bet it's not arbitrary....

BTW, -CLIT-.......slashdot has a neat section that features writing reviews.....review yourself, and post your story accordingly. Or face the bitch-slap of moderation, killing your karma forever. ::este::

  6. Why Windows? on When Appliances Revolt · · Score: 1, Redundant

Perhaps it's more convenient to use a pre-defined OS to power the computer components in the BMW, but one would think a tailored OS (or well-compiled linux kernel...*cough*...) would not only be more stable, but offer better performance in the long term.

Besides, how long will it be until we have viruses affecting cars? Eventually a large movement will inernet access in one form or another into the majority of new vehicles. Using a proprietary OS would make it much harder for a single, easy to write virus to be unleashed. If there's a widespread use of the same OS, what's to stop spread?

Perhaps closed-source has -some- good points?

  7. Does it really qualify..... on New Look at ADSL2 · · Score: 0, Redundant

...as a new iteration of the ADSL standard? A 6% gain and negligable service area increase are hardly worth hearlding as a revolution for ADSL. An upgrade, sure, but with such low gains, it may not end up being cost-effective to undergo the upgrade to new hardware, with DSL modems costing up to $200? Most customers probably won't be impressed. I, on the other hand, would give head in an alley for an extra 50kbps. Sign me up.

  8. Evolution... on The End Of Minix? · · Score: 2, Insightful

To many, it does seem sad when things go. I remember the particular irony I felt recently when Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy's died. He was a fine person, but really he was just Dave, the guy we all saw on Wendy's commercials, the guy who took a whole day to pronounce the phrase Muchas Gracias. Minix is just a part of history. An important one, it can be easily argued, but one who's time has now come. With a lack of users, there's no motivation to develop the OS any further, so it's just logical progression. Yes, Minix is saying goodbye, but the world still spins. Besides, you couldn't play QuakeIII on it anyway, right slashdotters?
