The majority of "techies" are still young, male and single so daycare really isn't a factor for them until they are well into their careers. However, this majority is quickly dwindling and it may due to think about other 'perks' that the workplace can offer other than free cell phones and Internet access. What do you all think?
I think the best reason for having daycare.. is to increase the interest of women in the field. Women do not want to have to choose between a career and their family. Having daycare might encourage more women to enter the field.. if they know that they have options when they have a family.
Now did I say that I was unable to formulate my own opinion? Actually no.. i did not.
I think the point I was trying to make.. was that.. if he wants to make comments then why not put them in the comments section like everyone else.
It seems as though the posters are of the opinion that they have the greatest opinions of them all. Hey.. if I wanted to read his opinion.. I probably would have read the comments section.
I was under the impression that slashdot was "news for nerds." So.. I would guess that they are trying to post news (and I doubt they check each for how accurate.. but that really is not their job). So is it really that hard to just post an article and leave your comments for the comment section?
Not really.. and you seem a bit annoyed.. maybe you should relax next time you reply.
Although a bit offtopic.. this posting is a primary example of how biased Slashdot is.
Slashdot might be more respectful if they simply posted a story without the posters editorial comments. Why not let the readers decide that a story is "lame." And in turn, the comments that you add to each story always spin off remarks on how hypocritical slashdot is.
Why not just post a story.. and leave your comments for the COMMENTS SECTION?!?
Being a woman myself.. I can honestly say that.. without living this day in and day out.. you will never understand what is going on. But you do not have to understand it.. you just have to accept it.
It is not about how women "cant make it" and are whining about this or that.. it is about making the technical area accessible to people of all genders/colors/age etc. Women have some very strong barriers to overcome. Unfortunately a lot of professors in college.. are not too far away from the 1950s mentality. Although a large number are open to women entering the field.. they lack the understanding of how to relate to students of the opposite sex.
Men and women are different.. which is a very good thing. Professors need to be aware of this... and often times jokes/comments and what not... that might seems appropriate before.. might not be today.
In the work place.. women are trying to break into the "boys club." Which.. while most men are very open.. there are a few problems similar to what I mentioned above. Men and women interact different than men to men.. etc. It is important to be sensitive to these issues...
All in all... I have been very disappointed with the articles on slashdot in regards to women in the tech area. You simply have to browse the comments.. and you can see how evident this problem is: "Linux chicks" "hot programmers." etc etc etc.. the comments go on and on..
I do not see how you can say that this does not exist.
The bottom line is.. women are struggling to prove that they can be a part of this male dominated area.. its more than just making it through school and proving yourself.. its one level above that.. and proving that not only that YOU can do it.. but YOU AS A WOMAN.. can do it. Its a lot of pressure.
Why post a comment about how one conference is all Windows... when you fail to make any postings about how other conferences are "all Linux."
It seems as though instead of promoting healthy competition.. most people are only promoting Linux. Isnt this exactly what we are against (in terms of only promoting Windows).
As a woman in the engineering field, I have been reading slashdot for over a year now. (Now now.. I know thats not too long). I have tolerated story after story regarding women in the industry and read numerous sexist comments in response.
My advice to slashdot is to drop these stories. Not only are they insulting to your women readers, but they make slashdot seem like a hunting ground for women. I know that your readers have more class than this.
I do not read slashdot to determine how to get a geeky man or how I can not attract geeky men. I do not need another mans perspective on why women dont like computers. I enjoy some stories with tid bits of trivia information, but the majority of stories are insulting and degrading to women.
Not only that, but the generate a large amount of comments that focus on men boasting about their geeky woman.
I live day in and day out in this industry. I know how women feel and I know why most do not like this industry. If slashdot feels that they are supporting women and encouraging them, they are doing exactly the opposite. I would suggest focusing on the technology and what matters. In order to get women intereted in this industry, talk about it. And if you want to know really why women dont like the industry... why not just ask them instead of posting insulting stories such as this.
I think that there is more to this than what is on the surface...
I am a woman in her early twenties majoring in EE. Now.. there are no other women in my classes... which first is a clear indication that there are significantly less women in the field than men. (which duh we knew).
When you are dating or looking for a date.. you tend to try to find someone with similar likes. For some reason.. a lot of women do not find computers or technology very interesting. That doesnt mean they arent intelligent and cant make it in the field.. but I read an article that stated that most women found the field to be dull and uncreative. (which i disagree with). So.. now if a woman is looking for a man that has similar interests.. she most likely wont seek out a geek (unless she is like me.. heh). So while the men may not be seeking someone similar to them.. the women are..
Regarding a geek in his early 20s.. I believe you have more of a chance then anyone. You are either in college or fresh out of college.. as long as you join different groups.. and explore different interests... Then women can have other ways to relate to you then just on a technical level... and they will find similarities..
Plus.. the right woman always comes along when you arent looking for her..:)
Actually Microsoft Word is a very nice word processing program. Every piece of software has its purpose.. and NONE of them are perfect. Sure there are little annoying parts of Word, but overall it does a nice job. And yes... the fact that it is readable almost on every machine is a good thing. I am not supporting the Microsoft Monopoly.. but I do believe we need a common platform, such that we do not have such boundaries such as not being able to display word documents on a UNIX box (at least easily) and vice versa. I think that most people that are into a LINUX as the only way to go.. arent being fair to all the other Operating Systems? Linux has its problems too.. try setting up ppp connections. It takes two minutes in Windows.. But anyways.. my whole point is everything has its purpose. Its all a matter of tastes. Why flame people for liking Microsoft Products?
Unless you are from another country, the average size is a 14. I have read this in many many articles and if you look beyond your circle of friends you will understand that it is true.
A size 14 is not just big. It also has to do with height. From your statement of 5"-5"4 being average.. that is on the low side.. and most likely they probably arent wearing a size 14 because they arent tall enough.
Womens clothing sizes are not as cut and dry as a mans. When you buy mens jeans, you go by length and waist. However, women have hips.. and it makes things a bit more difficult. So lets say you are a women who is 5'8" and weighs 175lbs. Now.. not only do you need to get a larger size for the height.. but you need to find the right cut and style.. depending upon your hips.. and where your weight resides.
I am not saying that men dont have the same problems. It is not just as cut and dry as you wear a size 12 or above and you are fat. So before we judge what fat is.. we need to look at all the factors.
Besides that.. muscles also play a role.. the more muscles you have the larger your clothes will need to be.
So just because the average size of women is 14.. doesnt make the average woman fat.
And regarding how much you eat.. it isnt how much you eat.. but what you eat.
Think about it.. if Sequent "adds up to almost nothing when compared to any of the Unix big boys" then why would IBM even bother with them?
And regarding your hostile and rude comment about Sequent employees.. I bet that if anything some of the marketing or lawyers will be layed off.. but they still need the people who support sequent products (ex. OS, Compiler group).
Maybe you shouldnt be so quick to jump to conclusions and just wait and see.

I have read several comments in regards to how outdated the information/statistics are..so..

When I spoke the one of the respresentatives at Cray they said that SGI wouldnt own them for long. Thats why they had separate booths.

And with that kinda attitude.. your right hand will probably be your best friend.

First off.. it seems really silly to write about how they used the term merger instead of bought.
So to show how silly it is.. check out this article..
