  1. Apple Operating System? on Will Vanderpool Make Linux More Popular? · · Score: 1

For those of you installing gentoo on slow hardware here are your installation instructions:

    1. %emerge system

    2. %emerge "all packages you want"
    wait 24 hours...
    3. Profit ??? your system is complete.

For those of you that say compiling on slow hardware isn't a worthwhile investment of your time, stop watching every line of code compile. Your computer is a big boy and he/she can operate for hours on end without you looking over its shoulder.

I would like to see something critical go IPv6 exclusively. If... say, most of the world's search engines ran only IPv6, think of how much that would inspire people to adopt it, from the consumer all the way up to the corporations that rely on the consumer's business. We just need someone important enough to put their foot down and say "You must have IPv6... now."

Umm...Ok, but all this suggestion is going to do is piss off alot of novice computer users. While the majority of /.ers know the reasons for IPv6 and how to implement it in our perfered OS. IPv6 is going to be slow to catch on until the Major consumer OSes (Windows, Mac OSX) have IPv6 support in their GUI (by this I mean Network System Preference in OSX and Network and Connections in Windows). I know, I know there is already support for IPv6 in OS X (I'm not sure about windows) but if my cable provider switched to IPv6 right now I don't even want to think about all of my friends and family that would call me to help configure their computer for their new fangaled internet service.

just a note of the firewire/ipod angle I posted above. IP over firewire does exist (although it is in most instances beta versions) so attaching a laptop to the other end is also possible for non-dumb storage as you put it.

  7. iPod on Low-powerered Ethernet Hard Drive? · · Score: 2, Interesting

just continuing on with another posters idea of using firewire, why not use an apple iPod. It comes with its own built-in battery and add on batteries are on the way for the new models. Apple states a 10 hour battery life (although it will probably be less if you have to spin the drive all the time).

As for the distance factor I use a six foot firewire cable with my iPod but I have seen 10 foot cables before, as for 20 foot ??? they might be possible but you might have to build them yourself. I get the impression you know you way around electronics so this shouldn't be a problem. I would check to see what the cable lenght limit is on firewire first though.

If you are going to post a comment like this you can at least get your facts right. RoundUp is a Herbicide (=kills weeds).

monsanto's former chemical division(which has since been spun off as a seperate company)

the last time I checked my close relative that works at monsanto in their herbicide division still works for a company called monsanto.

These plants do not fufil any of the pormises that monsanto and other make about GMO crops, they dont have higher yields, they aren't drought resistant, and they arent healthier. All they do is allow moroe of a chemical that has bee nshown to be harmfull to humans to be sprayed onto our food.

do you have any facts to prove this? Are you a farmer or do you just grow roundup ready (insert crop here) in your backyard garden. if you are going to flame some companies product in a public forum you could a least cite some source or personal experience.

you seem to miss the point of this service. You will LEGALLY be able to download the music. Sure p2p is nice but a large amount of files you find on p2p are either low quality(radio dubs) or not even the right artist. And the biggest bonus of this whole service is that the FBI won't come bust down your door and confiscate your computers after you pirate 20Gb of your favorite nsync and Backstreet Boys songs. Last time I checked computers still costed more than the $.99 that the download will cost you.

This is a very true statement. I work for a small student run non-profit newspaper at a major university and this kind of thing happend to whio used to be my boss. He was hosting 5 servers on the company T1 that were for his own personal use. To make matters worse they were company computers (albeit old sparc 20's) and the site he was hosting of them was for his personal consulting work he did in his free time. When I asked about them after he set them up he told me they were just running seti@home. Our ISP noticed this and told the big boss and he was promptly fired. Thus I advise against this if you wish to continue working at your current place of employment. I can't complain though b/c when he left I got a big raise.
