since microsoft changed the OEM lic terms to require new lic w/ mb/proc change the choice between XP pro OEM or Retail was sort of a tough call since if you just ate the higher retail copy price you could move it about to your next build no problem...
but now.....
since they have put similar restrictions on Vista Retail....no reason not to buy the OEM version.... sigh
it does seem like m$ is going outta their way to piss me off sometimes.
a valid answer... seriously if youtube, myspace...ummm and the rest of the "social networking" sites all fell off the face of the earth i could hardly care less.
that we can get wifi throughout most airports in america (well assuming we will pay for it) but we can not brush our teeth once past security since our fucking toothpaste has been confiscated.)
as some have already pointed out lawsuits are against people selling pirate m$ software.
i was just reading on ars how with vista VLK versions of vista will have their own version of product activation... since a whole bunch of the pirating of XP was leaked VLK program keys... I wonder what this means?
these things use too much power... idle the quad core uses more power than a core 2 duo at idle...
i say wait a gen or two for more energy effiecent quadcores... (i'm asking cause i do not know...) but is it feasable for a multicore cpu to be designed to shut off extra cores when idle as to minimilize it's engergy consumption?
honestly i keep waiting for something to really "blow me away" and maybe it is the things i've been using the pc for...but my A64 3200XP still seems just fine... for the momment.
The cease-fire agreement included the "Draft 1.0" of the standard that allowed manufacturers of consumer WLAN gear to spawn the current crop of "draft 802.11n" products. These half-baked, rushed-to-market products are buggy and interfere with legacy 802.11b/g WLANs. They also, with the rare exception, fail to crack the magic 100 Mbps mark under best-case conditions and mostly lack the gigabit Ethernet switches that should go hand-in-hand with products that prominently display speeds in the hundreds of Mbps on their product boxes.
until 802.11n routers can play nicely with other wireless networks and not interfere with 802.11b/g WLANS...and can offere some actual performance benifit I fail to see any reason to have anything to do with 802.11n (pre n)
they have already boycotted XP in large part... when i look around at various places the workstations seem to almost always be running win2k not XP... as 2k is in extended support ending (according to m$ 2010) can business users boycott vista? Assuming corporate customers are not willing to move the desktops to XP or Vista what does m$ do at that point... stick to the plan and end support for 2k ??? running the risk that corp customers look at other options?
Vista's UI is different enough that end user training is going to seem necessary....so if your going to have to do that anyway. maybe it is the perfect time to look at moving to *nix desktop enviroments or something.
my question with XP pro in a corporate network setting is what exactly does it bring that is useful to the table over 2k? not much really more stuff to turn off to keep people from wasting time and improved wifi support i guess...and somewhat better boottime.
with vista it seems there would be even more bloat/timewasting stuff to disable/remove.
unless they lose and have to pull the model you bought off the market and suddenly you cant get vista drivers for it next year
that said I think it was a big mistake on everyone's part to make the dominate format MP3 it would have been much better for consumers to demand (not buy) anything that didn't play OGG
oh well.
the answer appears to be yes in fact StopBadware.org appears to think AOL was previously "good"...
StopBadware.org releases report on AOL 9.0
Posted by Christina Mon, 28 Aug 2006 11:22:00 GMT
Our latest report, on the free version of AOL 9.0, is a bit of a departure from some of the applications we have highlighted in the past. Perhaps John Palfrey, the executive director of the Berkman Center and one of StopBadware.org's principles, puts it best: "AOL has a long and storied history of being a leader in the fight against badware. AOL plainly does not belong in the same category as the all-too-prevalent, garden variety badware providers. But the free version of AOL 9.0 that we tested, in our view, does not live up to the company's rich legacy. AOL is a trusted brand in the Internet service space. What we are calling on AOL to do today is to honor that trust by telling users exactly what they're putting on their computers, give users an easy way to opt out of having so many programs installed and running after download, and ensure that users can uninstall all the applications they don't want on their computers."
Palfrey adds, "We've been very impressed with [AOL's] response since we sent them the draft report and we look forward to working with them to address the concerns that we are raising in our preliminary findings."
if I didn't have VPN over wifi thanx to m0n0wall and my RADIUS server...... as such I guess I will wait for N assume my trusty BEFW11S4 (b router) dosn't crap out.
if anyone is thinking of going G the WRT54GL with the dd-wrt firmware is pretty sweet.
...then I realized it was cause the apple guys were just getting off work.
and yes i am aware it is not 3:30AM in china....thank you it was supposed to be a joke... but please feel free to post a link to some sorta timezone converter....
well you never can be suprised to be modded troll making a joke about apple
now if i had replaced "apple" with "windows"
in a m$ story it have been +5 funny
sometimes you people make me fucking ill..... anyways... how apple enjoys such a postive reputation as being this "great" company when they are every bit as greedy and evil as m$...maybe more so... is a mystery.
anyone that defends any corporation making people work 60hrs a week to barely survive is a total twat IMHO.... Apple customers should tell apple they are not willing to accept these types of practices. 40hrs a week is more than enough time that anyone should have to spend at work.
but seriously whoever modded my orig post troll is fucking ghey just so you know.
hmm... were we live (Del Mar( they will take CRTs / TVs for free at the recycling center.
When we lived in Seattle I had to pay $25 each to get rid of 2 dead TVs.
Seriously if you speak English LOUDLY ENOUGH people all ove the world can understand you.
damn i cant remember the actually funny thing i was going to say.....
god damn lameness filter wont let me post this in all caps....

yes that way they could gather valuable data on the fashion taste of big nerds that basically never go outside.
step 1:: gather data on the small percentage of population that REALLLLLY like MMORPGs step 2:: ???? step 3:: PROFIT
a small truck can replace a semi truck.... if you are moving small amounts of items.
thanks for sharing

for that matter hanging out on Slashdot will not get you laid either...

/timewasting stuff to disable /remove.

with vista it seems there would be even more bloat
i did wonder why my win2k DNS server went down right after installing Vista RC1?????...... oh wait no it didn't
the FUD to Reality ratio of this story is very high indeed... actually 99% FUD.
Vista will not even make IPv6 DNS requests unless you have an IPv6 address for the machine.
and i have some complaints
... remove this or at least give it a "off switch"
first off i have a BSOD problem if I try to logon to my VPN connection
2nd the stupid startup sound
3rd the new UI...is more annoying than helpful... all in all using vista is less effiecent than using XP
the UAC then is still too intrusive.
unless they lose and have to pull the model you bought off the market and suddenly you cant get vista drivers for it next year
that said I think it was a big mistake on everyone's part to make the dominate format MP3 it would have been much better for consumers to demand (not buy) anything that didn't play OGG oh well.
wow... that is the most retarded thing
thanx m$
vista may well cause me to say adios to windows... I'm not sure I can take much more of this kinda crap
I can't have Native HD DVD (32bit) or WinFS or..... errr what the hell all else did they junk from vista
but i can have the most annoying part of windows startup.... the fucking startup sound... forced on me regardless of if i want it or not ????
it would be FUCKING GREAT in the office too..... for 3hours i could hear the start up sounds as co-workers arrived and logged in....
vista may not be the next winME after all it may be much much worse than that.

Genuine Passport Advantage
it is the kinda trap were they offer to give you butt loads of money to come work for them instead.

if anyone is thinking of going G the WRT54GL with the dd-wrt firmware is pretty sweet.
whatever you do DO NOT buy a WRT54GS or later model WRT54G models..as they suck pretty much http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G
but the laptop with the response plan on it burst into flames.
...then I realized it was cause the apple guys were just getting off work.

it's like my worst nightmare
oh they meant building them
well that is almost as bad
