    I am more interested in the terminal velocity of the Baguette.

    According to Captain Bob, it is quite low.

    I soon found out however, that I had not counted on the terminal velocity of French baguettes. Even when I stretched the elastic band dangerously close to the breaking point (its and mine), the [baguette] would flutter out of the air, like a wounded duck, only a few meters down range.

    Is this any better/worse than the Remote Code Execution vulnerability in Silverlight last month?

    And a general question to Slashdot. Is the current proliferation and duplication of interactive web platforms (Flash, Silverlight, HTML5 etc) with the resultant increase in surface area for vulnerabilities better or worse than a monoculture?

    Would we all be better off just pushing for a single web platform?

    Why do people insist on trotting out their own experiences of success

    Because my experiences match that of the vast majority of Ubuntu users.

    Just as the people who are caught up in the "endless reboot" problem with Windows 7 are a tiny minority, so are those having trouble with Karmic.

    Even your example fails since you are having difficulties but are willing to brush them off.

    My "difficulties" are that a single plugin for a single program hasn't been updated yet. The author of the plugin has been notified and has provided a beta updatebeta update. I have no doubt that I'll be seeing the release version in my update manager soon.

    I'm using Karmic on three computers, one fresh install and two upgrades from Jaunty.

    All of them are good - one is Xubuntu on a lower-specced laptop and it feels quicker, both booting up and in use. The biggest problem was the current MythStream not working with V0.22 of MythTV.

    people who don't pay for their software (pirates) aren't actually customers

    I've paid for my Microsoft software and I still get a shitload of botnet-posted spam. Likewise, I have to do routine tech support for friends laptops with malware infested Windows installs despite the laptops having legit versions of Windows installed by the manufacturer.

    So are you suggesting that Microsoft has no responsibility to myself and my friends, or are you saying that they're incapable of fulfilling that responsibility?

    Believe me, I had the same thought on reading the title of the article, but Steve's inclusion certainly covers it.

    He was also heavily involved in the creation of the "Most Influential" document.

    Speaking as a guy who learned on AmigaBasic, I can verify that it was an unstable piece of shit and the best thing you could do with it was replace it with something like ACE Basic

    You obviously haven't used Windows 7.

    Sigh, I've seen this script so many times before.

    Yes, I have used Win 7. It is widely available and has been for a long time. I have a copy of it I can boot right now if I feel it'd achieve anything. No, it is not exciting. No, it is not particularly fast, just a little quicker than the previous MS release, which was widely considered sluggish. No, it will not help me do anything better than XP. No, there is no real point in "upgrading". Yes, I know this will be modded to oblivion for being heresy.

    they're talking about iTMS here, not just the iTunes player.

    Yep, it's about a music store.

    It makes sense for Google to have a content store for their Android phones, and it's clear Apple doesn't want to play nice with competitors (Palm Pre, anyone?). I just hope Google do it so well that they frighten Apple into dropping prices and restrictions.

    It's a market that's begging for a little real competition.

    Slashdot is pretty much a Microsoft shop these days. Just try saying anything Microsoft doesn't want discussed (like Win 7 is bland and uninteresting interesting, or that MS marketing is gaming mod points). You'll be guaranteed a "Troll" mod.

    MS reputation managers started infiltrating /. a couple of years ago, and the job's just about complete.

    I have to disagree with the Troll mod.

    Sadly, it's inevitable here if you discuss anything Microsoft doesn't want discussed.

    It's a fact though. They couldn't afford to take any risks after the Vista failure and played it very conservative with Win 7. Of course, admitting that wouldn't generate a lot of hype, so their marketing machine is in overdrive trying to spin a very bland OS as something exciting.

    At least it's showing clearly how much Microsoft has infiltrated Slashdot over the past couple of years.

    It's slower.

    Win7 is basically just a refurbished Vista under the hood.
