    I agree that Java isn't viable. The size of the runtime hurts, as does the fact that it's just an ugly language.


    C and C++ are definitely viable development languages, but I prefer Perl for my projects. Perl and CPAN let you develop apps incredibly quickly. Distribution isn't an issue on UNIX machines - pretty much every UNIX box has perl on it nowadays. And if you need your app to run on Win32, you can ship the same script and all you need to add is one 340K DLL.


    Once you use Perl, it's very difficult to go back to other languages.

    O(1) is constant time. In other words, regardless of the size of a particular data structure, it takes the same amount of time to access an element. This is normally considered a Good Thing.
