  1. Re:Shareware = Demo on release on The Return Of Shareware Games · · Score: 1

I can see my migration to the console is starting to affect my game trivia knowledge. I meant Unreal 2 thanks for pointing that out. The thing that really annoyed me with Unreal 2 is they actually released over 400megs of ingame movies with no demo in sight. If I'm not mistaken most of the major gaming websites had tons of preview footage with plenty of these ingame videos.

  2. Shareware = Demo on release on The Return Of Shareware Games · · Score: 5, Insightful

I don't know about you guys but I miss the days of being able to try a demo before buying a game...sometimes months prior to the release. I remember playing the Quake III: Arena beta for months before it was released at which point I was first in line to purchase it.

Nowadays you get games that are released without demos or in the cause of Unreal 2003 a demo months after the game is available retail. Is it just me or does it make more sense to either release demos/shareware prior to launch rather then waste development time weeks after launch when most people have demoed it at a friend's house by now.

    Just my observations :)

Oh and another great thing about shareware is it can be freely ported and released on different platforms without it being considered piracy. Its nice playing Heretic Shareware on my Dreamcast.

I just got hooked to this new addiction back in May and I can safely say I've got more exercise over the past few months then i'd get in an entire year!

Because if one system is free, open and public, and another is a account limited secure network requiring login and password then you have a problem. If i am trying to connect to the free wifi network and I'm in an area where the pay service is stronger then I'll be the one my card will see, and if both networks are on the same channel this will continue on in a constant power struggle. He who has the stronger signal would be the default node so to speak.

  6. Being "The Most Wired City" has it's downfalls. on Starbucks Clashes With WiFi Hobbyists Over Airwaves · · Score: 1

Portland is great for all the new technology that's tested. We were the first market for Albertson's Webvan type service, and the first market where Safeway directly competed with them. Now while I really do enjoy these new services that are brought to us this starbucks "business venture" is pure crap. If you go to http://www.pdxwireless.org you'll get a another mapping of all the wireless network areas and more and more of Portland is being Wifi wired. Hopefully the hobbiests can either outpower the starbucks network, or starbucks can go open and public, but the chances are not even worth figuring.
