You don't know this for sure, I would imagine that the guys that work for the Gov, are not going to be able to tell you what they are working on, Well they might after they chalk their mailbox and you have a significant amount of money. There is prolly something out there that is just as good, if not better, that is Very underwraps...
The AC that posted below is correct. There is a digial signal that is being transfered by way of PVC (I belive) using the PVC ID of the "cable modem"(really a bridge) and binding an IP to that PVC (PVC for those that don't know is a (private Virtual cricuit/Perminate Virtual Cicuit)- I have heard them both.
Dosen't it bother anyone else that EVEN MOTOROLA calls it a " Cable Modem " on it's box. bleh... Marketing Drones......
Nice comments. Are you sure that the last comment was ficticous? It sounds about right. At least in the eyes of my GF's Family. They are clueless. Paying for AOL dialup (what is it now? $85.00/mo) and also paying for cable. You would think that they would at least do the BYOIC (bring your own internet connection) option. AOL sucks (but we aready knew that.)
They are not, There is no Analog signal on the Phoneline in the DSL spectrum. Granted, there is a analog signal on the voice spectrum, DSL opperates at a much higher frequency.
The DSL signal is just using the copper pair for connectivity, the same way that 10/100baseT uses cat5 for connectivity.
As for a pair of DSL modems acting as a bridge, it is a actually pair of bridges connecting two networks (home computer/LAN-public/private network of provider). One side is the DSLAM (one port on one card is the receiving bridge) and the other side is the DSL bride.
I guess this is just a pet peeve of mine, that people are not educated, and actually treated like dummies. (but that is an entire ask slashdot article in itself)
Granted, I don't know the technology behind Powerline Broadband, With DSL/cable, the Connection is NEVER in a analog state, yet most DSL/cable providers call their properly named "Bridges" a Modem. If I am not mistaken, A Modem Modulates, and Demodulates. MO-Dem. A bridge, simply converts one protocol to another- ATM-to-Ethernet etc never leaving the digial domain.
If they could set up an ATM network, and use PVC's to isolate the data, it could work, but it would require a decent amount of config on the users end. The site is kinda scarse.
What type of hardware does this require, this would give a little insight in to the type of network they set up.
I don't know if I agree on this. So they try and say that they are spending more money? Personally, I would rather brag how I spent the left over money on my Cessna, and not some project that we paid way to much money. I don't belive that the pissing contest is how much money that your company can spend in this economy, but how much you save and in return put in your pocket.
Based on recent events, I would definatly say that the exec's and chiefs, are more interested in their personal gains then in bragging over who is spending more. Article in NYtimes (Free registration- fee required to read full text- over 30 days old) about Adelphia Exec's getting arrested for fraud. One of which spent 14 million on a golf course. And finally, pull up ANY search engine and put the words "WorldCom" in it..... Need I say more?
Actually, it was ment to be funny, but apparently some people thought that it was "insightful". The reason that I had used the bathroom comment was because of the poll that you linked.
While I am not very familliar with Perl and it's capabilitys, I often hear and experance reading others code as a sometimes very challenging proccess. What some perl programs do in one line, others do in 8. Do you ever have trouble reading others code? If so, have you ever considered making a more standard method of coding to assist all in future work of old code?
I ask not be flame you, but to truly ask. I have been racing Go-karts and Cars competitively since I was ten. The Ricers that lower their cars with nothing else done go ahead and shoot them. Those that purchase the coil-over suspension, but on the strut braces, increase the diameter of the sway bars, and finally actually KNOW how to drive, are doing it right.
You mentioned that manufactures are spending millions of dollars working on the design and manufacture of the car. Although, a portion of the money spent in R&D is also spent to cutting cost. This is where the parts that are better for preformance are being tosed with something that will save them $5.00 a car. While 5.00 here and there is not too much money, when you make 1,000,000 cars.... you do the math.
Unfortunately, you will almost NEVER see this on the road as it is way too expensive, and most people are JUST interested in an additional 5 bhp, and looking like the cars that they see in the magazines.
I go on drives in a car club of mainly BMW's and Mercedes's. Most of the people driving spend a significant amount of time on the track, auto-X or actual track time.
I personally enjoy the book aspect of training. If you have a good book, and a person.... (Friend, peer, mentor, teacher etc.) To answer all the questions that you have then training can be relatively cheep.
Many of us that are smarter, or have a higher IQ, have very hard time learning in a classroom, with an instructor teaching us. I would much prefer to open a book, try and figure it out. If I really don't get it, I will talk to an expert.
One of my professors from college (I failed his class, but I learned a lot from him) said "to truly be educated, it is not to sit in class and pass an exam, but to pick up a book and read. Everything that you ever wanted to know is in a book somewhere, and all you have to do is find it." My $0.02 on this is that if I sit in a class and regurgitate information to pass a test, most of which will be forgotten when I walk out the door of the exam. If I am truly interested in the subject, I will learn about it, retain it, enjoy the process and have a feeling of accomplishment.
I don't see that this is going to be very telling as far as true market share. LOTR is going to be a movie that is bought by a peticular market, most of whom ( I IMAGINE ) will aready have DVD's. IMHO, you need to do this on a movie that had great theater reviews, execlent revenew, and had much larger appeal to the general public as a "good flick".

but did you enjoy it? do you feel like you acomplished something? That is why I run linux on two of my boxes at home. I enjoy the challange, and I enjoy the feeling when you get something to work.
The problem with Standards and MS is that they have *almost* ALL of the Desktop OS market cornered. So you are exactly correct in saying that installing MS office on a Mac is just allowing MS to continue with THEIR standards. Unfortunately, the mass majority of the market just wants something that is intuitive, simple, easy to use and finally cheep. Mac's are not cheep, and Windows is the next closest mainstream thing.
Experience - I am currently on a contract at a very large International Law firm. We are migrating from 95 to XP, and we have had a server that has been corrupting documents. The users NOW hate XP because they believe that the problem is the OS and not the server. Note: almost never do their computers lockup, and that WAS A HUGE problem before, but they have since forgotten that.
My point. The users don't care to know anything about the computer that they are working on, but just want it to work. IF, something does not work, they blame it on the computer (whatever there impression of a computer is, to some of the users, the Hard drive is the case, and the computer is the monitor)
They got it right. Let just hope Microsoft doesn't try this.
Why not? Isn't that the primary goal, A stable OS, that is easy to use and configure. I don't have ANY problem with MS using a BSD/UNIX/LINUX kernel. I have a problem with MS and their method to create a proprietary PC platform.
IMHO - The majority of/. users disgust with MS is not the OS, but the desire to make the computing platform proprietary, and non standards compliant.
Don't flame me for supporting MS. I am not supporting them, just making a point.
Well does this mean that the RIAA is just going to raise the price of CD's from what is aready a too much, to make it easier to get people prosocuted? All that is going to do, is decrease the quantiy of their sales, and (force/pursuade/drive) more people to use these filesharing apps.
I could very easlily see this as a possablity because *almost* every other method/step that they are taking is not a good method.
(I also am not a fan of Filesharing.)
OTOH - They are not going to be able to go AFTER someone that has a copy of a movie that was taped in the theater because of this clause:
(i) The quality and performance of the infringing item are identical to, or substantially indistinguishable from, or the infringing item is or comprises a digital or electronic reproduction of, the infringed item
I don't belive that the quality and performace are that of the RETAIL copy, and BECAUSE the person with the copy of it, is not the one that MADE it. They are not liable.
This is my take on the 1,000 dollars. If they find more then 1,000 dollars worth of items on your computer(s), then you would be responsible for that one year. ie. CD = 15 dollars it has 15 songs = 1 song = 1 dollar. 1000 songs = 1000 dollars.
They can not prove, unless they have hard evidence that you have been sharing those files with others, therefor you are only liable for, what YOU have on your computer(s). Although with evidance, you could very well be liable for up to: 5 years. Doh.
What does this teach us, Load a small, simple OS; Load VMware. Load a second OS of choice in VMware. copy all p0rn, warez, divx, mp3's, etc to VMware, shutdown VMware - Encrypt. Boot VMware to RAM drive. Decript and play- when the door bell rings. kill the power. They see nothing but.... a large amount of encrypted data. They can't even see what the OS is.
You said: "Note that the new model conflicts with mostly everything."
Dell said: Customization. Every Dell system is built to order. Customers get exactly, and only, what they want.
Latest Technology. Dell's efficient model means the latest relevant technology is introduced in its product lines much more quickly than through slow-moving indirect distribution channels. Inventory is turned over every 10 or fewer days, on average, keeping related costs low.
My comment:
In the article they did not say anything about selling computer that are sitting on a shelf waiting to be shipped. I would imagine that they are going to move the PC down the assembly line as they all move, and will be configured to the resellers needs. The article does not say anything about requiring resellers to keep anything in stock, nor NOT being able to customize the PC.
As a computer reseller myself, I would use Dell because in the frequent event that one of my clients needs several computers, I (READ: my company) can go to Dell, order the Specs that I feel are best for the clients needs, They get shipped to us, and we can sell them, and provide the support. As a small business I get many things out of this. I get addidtional income from PC sales and less time spent on the project. I am selling quality hardware with my name on it. Most importanly, the client is going to come back to me for support if there is a problem, as well as hopefully refer me to new clients.
I don't know of that many, although Several of my clients have switched over to Slack. Most of them are under 30 people, and have been very happy with it. I tought them how to login and type startx. This is very useful to me cause I can ssh in and make any changes and updates from remote. If I was able to sell Whitebox PC's at a discount from Dell, I would be VERY happy as I typically recomend Dell for people that want quality, and good support.
Their Support services are EXECLENT - RMA's are easy, FAST and few compaired to the # of boxes in production; the support techs (most of them) are really competent, and seem like they enjoy working there.
I think that this is a brilliant way to bring in more business for Dell, and make it easier for companies that taylor to the small business cut their opperating costs selling premade boxes. (no shipping from multiple vendors, no employee time spent putting it together.)
With this definition, and if hardware was open, I would imagine that it should not be that hard to circumvent the measures that the DRM is trying to enforce. Why not write a device driver that disables its unwanted features?
I am sysadmin, not a coder; could someone educate me in on if this is a realistic possibility?
I don't have an awnser for you about telco's, but from a small ISP's (4000 suscribers) perspective, No data is loged.
I used to work at a since dead ISP CapuNet and we never paid any attention to the traffic that passed through our network other then, the traffic patterns and link utilization of the main trunks we had. As far as I know, NO logging of headers or raw data was done by us. The only time that would pay attention is in the event that someone is sending an obscene amount of email (notified by outside complaints) or if there was a DDOS attack from or against our clients.
