This is actually wrong. Unless you replace ALL of the immune system in a person, their immune cells will recognize and attack a foreign body - it's recognized as non-self. Anything non-self is attacked.

What your stating is based on a flawed (but common) misconception that the immune system 'learns what is dangerous' or attacks what is dangerous, which hasn't been shown by any real facts/supporting research.

In addition, a childs immune system is only 'immature' based upon the fact that it hasn't been exposed to as many antigens as an adult - which allow for a rapid secondary response when re-exposed to those antigens. An example is chicken pox - once you get it, your exposed to the antigens and your body can rapidly respond if exposed to it again so you only get the chicken pox once (most of the time.

Lastly, for the first few months alive, babies also have passive immunity that is gained from their mother. So, this would add an entire other level of complexity if the 'maternal' antibodies were to attack the new organs as well - though I have no idea if they would still be present at 6 months after birth. (As a side note, it also sometimes occurs that a mother's immune system will reject the baby and have to be treated with certain drugs to reduce/stop the killing of the fetus via the mothers immune reaction).

So, IMHO, yes, the child has to take the drugs for their entire life.

One last comment - very old people need more drugs because their bodies are failing because they are...OLD. Organs and cells do not have infinite lifespans. They simply can't deal with being sick at all - whereas a younger person can deal with the flu. Given the same level of immune response, the frail old person would die while a young healthy person would live.

People need to realize we are rapidly approaching a point where we realize what can and cannot be done with medicine and medical care. Certain damage is simply not fixable with drugs - replacements have to be made somehow. Either we do it with stem cells/growing tissues up in culture/etc. or we do it with cybernetic type prosthesis. Either way, many people are going to get pissed, say things aren't natural, etc.

My subject line sums it up though - someone will do this. Period. It's an incredible way to improve medicine and resolve a ton of current treatment issues (i.e. skin grafts, organ replacement, etc.). It has the potential to cure neurological diseases or at the least allow for their treatment.

The really unfortunate thing is that the Bush administration might actually believe that the stem cells we now have are really 'good enough'. If you work in science, you know...it's never 'good enough'. Everything has problems - without the ability to make new stem cell lines with the knowledge you gain from these 'original' lines, nothing will get done anytime soon.

Similar methods to this - altering existing genomes, creating DNA genomes from RNA viruses, etc. - have been done and is actually very easy. It doesn't actually say in the USA Today article (big surprise) WHAT they did that was so amazing. We make viruses that are not 'natural' as a matter of course - all you need to do is take some genetic material, modify it, toss it into a cell line and blamo. Mutated/altered virus you 'created'. If what you say is true (that they created the DNA 'from scratch') it's really not all that amazing to me. It's hard from a technical standpoint, but from it's analogous to not using the xerox machine and instead having ultra realistic artists recreate 1" square pieces then shrinking them down, taping them all together, and producing a finished copy. Basically, the roundabout way to get something done. In other words, time consuming != amazing. The work is something that amazes the masses, and is just 'Oh, thats nice' for many scientists in the field I believe. If anything, just making DNA that large from scratch is the big thing. I, personally, would be much more amazed if they took multiple viruses, amplified out certain genes and actually recreated a replication and infection strategy. For example, create a single stranded DNA version of single stranded RNA virus that uses proteins from a single stranded RNA to replicate and work but uses the protein coding for structure from a single stranded RNA virus. (Ignoring protein binding issues related to binding the genome would make it insanely hard, but it would still be amazing.)
