  2. BZZZT! Wrong! jet fuel != av-gas on Cell Phones and Air Safety · · Score: 1

I was standing on the tarmac waiting to board a flight in Pakistan, next to a 747 that was being re-fuelled (which was freaking me out anyway - the av-gas fumes were really strong), and the people behind me decided this would be a good time to light up a cigarette...

    1) 747s do not use Av-Gas; jet fuel is similar to diesel. You can toss a burning match into a bucket of such fuel and the match will simply go out. (The temperature required to ignite the fuel is higher than the flash point of gasoline.)

    2) No matter how strong the fumes smelled, do you really think the cigarette was going to a) set the fumes ablaze and b) the resulting fireball would travel all the way to the fueling area (blowing it up, no doubt)? That seems a bit farfetched.

PS That ridiculous story about a spark from a mobile phone blowing up a gas station is a urban legend.

Have you ever worked in a place where your work was carrying/funding dead weight on a project team? Will all due respect to Mr. Reiser, this is no different, and will probably always be an issue until everyone contributes equally to everything. Even then, what are the odds that eveyone will be credited equally?

Similarly, the project manager isn't doing his job if one person is "so essential that time off becomes unacceptable". Yes, it happens all the time; for crunch periods it may be a necessary evil, but only if the crunch is the result of uncontrollable external factors. Bad project mgmt != uncontrollable external factor.

  4. Find an advisor on Starting an After-School Computer Club? · · Score: 1

Find the most tech-savvy teacher you know and approach him/her about being the faculty advisor to the club. Unfortunately you probably won't get far without faculty involvement, i.e. adult supervision [in the eyes of the school administration], so you may want to start with that. The teacher will also be instrumental in helping you find a place to meet, like a spare classroom or even the teacher's own room if appropriate. (A biology lab probably wouldn't be suitable, but you get the idea.)

    Good luck!

Booting into Windows Whatever for five minutes would have saved you eight hours of banging your head against the wall, but at least you preserved your geek/anorak/H@x0r status, didn't you? You even got to complain about it on /.

You know, when you drink the $OS_OF_CHOICE Kool-aid to the point where you do something dumb like this, you really should take up a different hobby.

You and your friends are not a statistically significant sample, especially when you are trying to paint smart/geeky people with a broad brush. None of the geeky people I know play poker; there, I just refuted your assertion. :-)

  25. this is a pre-emptive "ssshhh" on Source Code To Dungeon Master Java Released · · Score: 4, Informative

The contents of the linked page (well, the larger frame) are as follows:

Dungeon Master Java is a remake of the classic FTL game Dungeon Master. It is written entirely in Java, and is designed to run as a stand-alone application rather than an applet in a web browser. It has high-resolution graphics that simulate a 3D environment. Most of the graphics are rendered in the free ray-tracer Pov-Ray. Item graphics and character portraits are done by hand with a paint program, though many are simply taken from the original and its sequels and touched-up.
Gameplay is very similar to the original, with real-time action, 90-degree turns, and step-by-step movement. One major change from the original is that monsters are not "stuck" in groups: they are completely free to wander, sometimes occupying a square with other monsters and sometimes not.
