In normal LCD panels, the LCD itself just blocks light in strategic areas, and the image is formed by a light source that is behind the panel. This technology claims that the electricity will be passed through each pixel, which will produce the light necessary itself.
The point of the article is that they have managed to use an inorganic layer in between just two organic layers and produce a magnitude of light equivalent to earlier efforts with 20 layers. These things have 25 times(!) the power efficiency. This might also be the first commercial application of quantum dots.
While I am perfectly confident that this will prompt the innovative (read desperate) users to develop a workaround, some time now things like this will make the work required to work around them too much for most. This will kill all P2P apps, even the ones that don't violate copyrights. The irony is that the people who pirate professionaly will probably benifit from this.
I wonder what lengths people will go to share files illegaly, and when the ??AA will realise that there are reasons for this desperation other than that people like to break the law. Good music and competitive pricing will be the only way to kill piracy.
... for example slashdot is a news and discussion site rather than a genuine^H^H^H^H^H^H^H out an out weblog. It may not have been such when the site started, but a large number of slashdot subscribers look at this site as a source of nerd news, not trivia, and definitely not to peek into other peoples diaries.
As for the hoax, the less discussion on the subject the better. It cannot be conclusivey proved that it was a hoax, and those who believe it was one will not listen to reason.
If you know enough to think that the unified look is a problem, chances are you know enough to change the looks back to the old ones. This is designed for those who don't know anything about linux and are confused by the multitudes of different widget sets.
"CDs only cost $1 to make, so they are charging way to much and deserve to have their stuff stolen" oversimplifies the whole thing to the point of being ridiculous."
I don't know if this is a nitpick, but I can buy a single CD, retail, for INR 20, which translates roughly to $0.4. For the Music industry making CD's in bulk, the cost must be more like $0.05.
Five years back CD's costed 100 times more and the significant part of the cost of a CD was its manufacturing cost. The cost of manufacturing CD's has dropped dramatically and the cost of freight has not risen nearly enough to compensate for that. The real reason you still pay the same tor the CD's is to pay for the RIAA's lawyers fees!
I'm surprised no one has made this point yet, but you don't want to mine those huge reserves for methane, even if you have technology to do it safely. The methane that will be brought up will be burnt as fuel, and release all that stored carbon into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide may not be as bad a greenhouse gas, but in the quantities mentioned, its bad enough. So you really want to be looking for a better alternative to carbon based fuels

This is true, but if you are drawing 4 amps then the power lines that are carrying those 4 amps to your homes are dissipating as much energy as they would if you were using up 480W. Low power factor is not a good thing and is discouraged by power complanies.
That said, most computer and electronic equipment is nearly unity power factor. That means that the 480W is probably correct!
Actually you don't need to cross your eyes. There is a device that does this for you. Its like a pair of glassed with prisms inside the frames, that bend the light going into your eyes, so you naturally see 3D. Its very simple to make yourself too.. you just need a couple of small angle prisms.
... but I think that people buy game consoles to have fun. If some people are having a lot of fun by fiddling around with the Xbox doing anything, loading Linux on it inclusive, I think that thats good.
I'm not so sure this is hurting M$ very much, it seems to me that this is bringing it additional publicity, not to mention the number of linux-geeks who will be buying Xboxes to try it out!
just a thought
I'm sure X3D Fritz can beat any toddler :-)

Hah!
The last time their "advanced technology" was foiled by a felt tip pen! I hope they have something better.
Wait... I hope they dont!

How do we get more energy?
The answer my friends, is blowing in the wind.
