  1. Re:That's debatable on First Look at Sony's Tiny Vaio UX180p · · Score: 2, Insightful

This is pretty normal for any brand-new laptop though. It looks as if all the hard stuff works - once the basic system, display and mouse are working, the rest are just devices.

In fact, it's quite probable that some of these devices will already work with the right driver revisions - linux support is actually quite good for most Intel wifi devices:
    http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/
    and many fingerprint scanners:
    http://www.upek.com/support/dl_linux_bsp.asp

I have both of these working fine in Ubuntu 6.06 on a ThinkPad X60 - I'm not sure if the fingerprint scanner is the same, but it's meant to be the same as what's on the Sony sz-140 series.

Umm - you don't seriously think these images are produced in real time, do you?

Maybe, just maybe, they could tell you where Osama was, last time the sattelite went overhead.

Provided he has a big sign saying 'Osama' in 61cm pixels on his hat.

  3. also Websphere Studio Application Developer on Java IDEs? · · Score: 1
For JSP/Servlet development, WSAD looks like an excellent new product. See http://www-4.ibm.com/software/ad/studioappdev/

It's based on the open source Eclipse system, and it gives you a customizable multi-pane view, allowing :

    • a syntax highlighted java code editor
    • jsp/html editor (with syntax highlighted source code and wysiwyg editor panes)
    • xml editors (including source view and gui editor panes for such things as web.xml files
    • Simple deployment both to Websphere Application Server, and Tomcat 3 or 4
    • Integrated debugging, again using Websphere or Tomcat
  4. Better to just have consistent music ids on Are Formats What Napster Really Needs? · · Score: 1
Rather than propogate yet more ill-defined tags to add to music, I'd prefer a music identifying system like TunePrint (discussed here the other week).

If every music track, irrespective of it's format, could be uniquely identified, then you could have central databases like CDDB or FreeDb that store such meta-information for us, rather than relying on tags stored with the track.

  5. Re:Relevance on Sir Alec Guinness Dies · · Score: 1

He was brilliant as Smiley in the BBC adaptions of John Le Carre's books.
He was hilarious as all members of the D'Ascoyne family, in "Kind Hearts and Coronets".
He was charming as the hero/villain in the Lavender Hill Mob.

    And that's just videos I own :)

  6. Re:Replace CDs on Pioneer Introduces 1st DVD Recorder (In Japan) · · Score: 1

Personally, I want this so I can back up my audio CDs, using lossless compression (such as LPAC or similar programs).

I have about 400 audio CDs. Lossless compression should get that down to about 100G - which isn't *that* many DVD disks.

Given I paid a lot of money for that music over the years, it would be really nice to be able to properly back it up - not to mention being able to take it all to work to bore my cow orkers...

    >Governmental tracking systems cannot be allowed >under any circumstances. Let's hope our bretheren >in the UK are up to the fight.

Well, here in Melbourne (au), we are getting tracking systems - thanks to business not governments.

Our new toll-road system uses a thing called an e-tag to track who drives where. This enables them to charge road users without toll-booths - but it also lets them track who drives where, and at what speed.

The only good thing is, the whole system has been riddled by bugs in the code, cracks in the tunnels, lawsuits, and general chaos.

It's wonderful to see local talent being appreciated... :)

Singer has been making comments like these for years here in Melbourne - why does his appointment to Princeton suddenly make them worthy of Slashdot?

I'm not saying this isn't important - just that it isn't new or radical. Sigh. I guess if it had been reported when he lived here, it would have been "Wacky Australian Prof murders babies!" ...

Also the following was posted on the Borland news server a couple of days ago :

The job offer is definately not a joke . In fact it's not the only job available for Linux at Borland, there are more available right now including for C/C++ on Linux. I wouldn't go so far as to say that we are working on things "in secret", but I will say that we are not yet prepared to make any public announcements. Stay tuned...

  11. Asteroids :) on Perfect score in Pac-Man · · Score: 1

We used to play insanely long games of Asteroids at uni.

Mind you, there was no limit to the score you could get, except your own endurance. You would get a free ship every 30,000 points, so you could effectively live forever. No problem about toilet breaks when you have 100 spare ships... The only problem was when they turned the machine off at the end of the day. Oh, and the occasional lecture :)

You *could* make the game more challenging however. We would compete over who got the highest score with one of the turn buttons taped down...

    those were the days.
