I think a wireless network blasting it's SSID at you, then giving you an IP address is more akin to an open door than an unlocked door. I'm fairly certain the configuration of many PCs would cause it to automagically connect to an open Wi-Fi point without asking. I think they only tend to ask if there is some form of key required for access.

Its all a question of timing IMO. If linux had existed first (damn you Torvalds, you should have been born 10 years earlier!), then it would have taken off as a real alternative. Basically, when I was growing up with computers, MS was the only option. It didn't matter how crap it was, what the problems were, you worked around it because it was your only option. I knew of only one person running a non MS OS, and they ran OS/2 (briefly). If linux was the only option, people would get used to it's idiosyncrasies, and work arounds, same as you do for windows. I honestly believe it's a matter of what you are used to. There are things on both platforms that are hard on the other platform. Any of the good stuff gets ported to linux though ;-) I used to wish all the free software that was on windows was on linux, I used a lot of it. Although I've found everything I need on linux now. Just waiting for everyone else to jump across and code for it. Yeah, Linux has problems, but so did windows for the first 10 years. I think linux is doing ok for it's age and funding, and I look forward to what it brings in the future.

I'm totally unqualified to comment, but how much plug-and-play with the consumer-device universe does Mac OS X provide? Do they have PCI/AGP slots? They obviously support the "standard" usb items, like mass storage controller, and keyboard/mouse. But what about cameras that don't present as a mass storage device? Do most camera makers supply drivers? If every manufacturer that produced Mac drivers made linux drivers I think we'd be better off, but I think we'd still be very careful buying hardware for our linux machines.

Unfortunately you need a windows PC for this, since they "embraced and extended" upnp, to require certain parameters and model names be reported by the UPNP/windows media connect server. Thankfully "x360mediaserver" fakes this well enough for audio. I can't get video streaming to work (not even from my work laptop running XP). Not even if I copy the xvid files to the laptop. I really wish MS hadn't made me jump through hoops to use this hardware as a network player. As it is, I just generally end up using my mythbox anyway because it's easier, and doesn't require UPNP hacks. My ideal solution would actually be playing Gears of War, and Dead rising on my mythbox, and interfacing the controllers to it. This is the first time I've bought a console, and the wireless controllers are definitely a great idea.

Even if it was the opposite of regardless, it's not what you want. You can consider something "with regard to" a fact or situation, or "without regard"/"regardless" of that situation. At this point I'm not sure if you mean to say "This is in light of the fact that MS allows basically zero industry participation" or "This is regardless of the fact that MS allows basically zero industry participation". But I think it's more logical to say "This is compounded/exacerbated by the fact that MS allows basically zero industry participation". Now I really must apologise for my outburst, but I can't stand that "word".

That said, I don't believe it should be mandatory, but from what I understand of this vaccination, there are few disadvantages, and great advantages. So 100% of people should be supportive of the vaccination. I also understand that one method of allowing low income families to access this is making it mandatory, since it lowers the price, or makes it free.

Since movies are basically a medium change of theatre, I see no reason the reverse operation couldn't be performed. Would people go see "Terminator, live on stage at the theatre"? probably not, but you could put on such a show. AS far as games, you'd need to create a gaming league, like a football league, and run a yearly series with paid TV distribution rights. Animation.... well my creativity is out for today.
