His 'spirit' is the actual laws that govern the universe as far as I can tell. Almost, but not quite. He uses the word "manifest", which has some rather specific connotations. It would be more accurate to say that the governing laws of the universe are the expression of some spirit, rather than the spirit itself.
I think it's also accurate to say that to Einstein, these laws were the only expression of that spirit in this Universe.
"The protection guaranteed by the [Fourth and Fifth] Amendments is much broader in scope. The makers of our Constitution undertook to secure conditions favorable to the pursuit of happiness. They recognized the significance of man's spiritual nature, of his feelings and of his intellect. They knew that only a part of the pain, pleasure and satisfactions of life are to be found in material things. They sought to protect Americans in their beliefs, their thoughts, their emotions and their sensations. They conferred, as against the Government, the right to be let alone - the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized men. To protect that right, every unjustifiable intrusion by the Government upon the privacy of the individual, whatever the means employed, must be deemed a violation of the Fourth Amendment. . .."
Do you trust Pharmaceutical Companies to give you all the information you need to make an intelligent decision? no, you idiot, i trust the FDA. What do you think it's there for, besides creating mountains of paperwork?
Marbury v. Madison
[The constitution] organizes the government, and assigns to different departments their respective powers. It may either stop here; or establish certain limits not to be transcended by those departments.
The government of the United States is of the latter description. The powers of the legislature are defined and limited; and that those limits may not be mistaken or forgotten, the constitution is written. To what purpose are powers limited, and to what purpose is that limitation committed to writing; if these limits may, at any time, be passed by those intended to be restrained?
When I used GIMP, I didn't expect a Photoshop clone. But I *did* expect a program with a GUI that was at least intelligible.
It's a perfectly intelligible UI. Provided your experience with UIs is limited to emacs. (NB: i'm an enthusiastic emacs user... who freely allows that GIMPs UI sucks)
How many people here still work for companies where the secretaries and janitors (sorry, don't have the inclination to use the newer politically-correct terms) actually are full-time, fully-vested, non-contracted company employees? I'm praying there are are least a few of you who do. I do!.. Then again, we have 56 employees total, 90% of which have a technical degree of some sort (including the CEO, he's an EE). Go small r&d business!
All Slashdotters are male. yep.
All Slashdotters are single. nope.
All Slashdotters are virgins. hell no.
99% have never kissed a girl. let's see. there are at least 1,000,000 registered users. 1% is still 10,000 people. of which i am one.
95% have never spoken to a girl other than Mom whose basement they live in. that's a lot of basements, missed classes, and interestingly-negotiated visits to resturants.
I prefer Adams:
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go now from us in peace. We ask not your counsels nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were ever our countrymen.
I read that book years ago. Cliff Stoll's investigation led to the capture and trial of German spies. Once this guy turned his data over to the FBI, the investigation went nowhere. Yeah. So did Cliff's. He had to keep beating them into doing something about it for months on end. I suspect this guy would've done the same if his bosses hadn't fired him.
with the caveat that this might spark a Real Text Editor flamewar, I have found no better way of handling all forms of LaTeX than the emacs package called AUCTeX (http://www.gnu.org/software/auctex/).
It is simply the most competent, sane, and complete way I've found to manage LaTeX. I use it for everything from a one page quickie lab writeup, to my thesis.
that accuracy rate is horrible. %correct is a crappy metric for model validation anyway because it doesn't reflect the proportion of false positives/false negatives in any meaningful way.
for those of you unaccustomed to reading abstracts, the above example was written more for getting more grant money than saying something actually useful.
Lack of intellectual curiosity is the quickest way to piss me off. Admitting you don't know something, or that what you know is wrong, and then *refusing* to do anything about it makes my blood pressure rise so fast that i have to close my eyes to stop the blood from spurting right on out.

It's all i can say that feels appropriate. This one hit close to home.
Gray and pointless? Tell that to Cliff Stoll. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Stoll

yeah. mentioned here: http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic= 718
Yeah. Basically, facebook is MySpace done right, and with pretty formatting.
As my American History professor was so fond of saying, "The end result of free capatilism is not capatalism. It's monopoly."

That would be Hastur, and you have to say his name three times in a row.
use rTorrent + screen + ssh; even faster, no graphical capaibility required.
it makes the rest of them sheep.

as of 0957 EST, City Of Tuttle is still showing an apache test page...
One can only hope that Alienware support and hardware won't be ill affected by this acquisition."
couldn't get much worse.
