Hell, I can grow vegetables, fix things, build things, and all sorts of other stuff. I don't think I need to live in a 1800's reenactment camp, but I things I would do perfectly fine in some wacky hippie commune, and prolly better there than in this 9-5 Bogusworld that America has become today.
Wi-Fi is only one solution, but it illustrates the desire we have for bandwidth. Having more options makes the Internet more ubiquitous -- which is what it wants, and what humans seem to want.
Telcos should NOT be the ONLY option -- and they're not. They are, however, trying to be, and where they fail is why other means are necessary (Cable, Wi-Fi, Cellular, Free-Space Optics, etc.). Telcos fail us by charging superior prices for nominal services.
Good point. Also think of the billions of dollars saved in depression treatment, highway accidents, and other benefits of telecommuting. Imagine if you will, the absolute best way to force a City to clog it's streets, and kill a percentage of the population -- rush hour traffic.
I had a contract outside of Pittsburgh for a while. The commute was 13 miles away. This took me FIFTY MINUTES to get through to be there by 8:AM. Contrast this with my current contract, thirty miles away in the other direction -- takes me 25 minutes at 9:AM, and I have to drive through the City. Go figure.
Of course, I use more gas, but I retain more sanity.
Seems like the question really is, do you pay for trash pick-up because your local government does not do this?
Some people commenting say that they don't want their local government to roll-out Wi-Fi networks, even if they are insanely cheap. It occurs to me, that this war in iRaq is not something I wanted, in spite of my efforts to persuade our esteemed government to this fact. Instead, I have to pay anyway.
Also, I paid part of the 27 billion the state of Pennsylvania gave to Verizon to roll-out fiber services -- and yet I choose not to use Verizon's services (DSL is too slow, no need for landline, etc). Now it is illegal for the local government to provide a Wi-Fi network?
Which carriers in Pittsburgh are doing wireless? Even the dinky little ISP here that DOES do wireless, only lites up a couple of hotspots -- it's not city-wide.
Actually, there aren't lots of options, had you done your research. This is part of the problem with monopoly -- there is only one.
Meanwhile, the local ISPs and (presumably already) WISPs do what, exactly?
They resell unshielded, untwisted copper pairs from Verizon, or whomever it is out west. This makes money for the last-mile telcos (twice -- once for the customer, and once for the ISP).
Cut out the middleman, and providing Internet service (like, through wireless equipment) becomes insanely cheap by comparison.
Let's hope. I wanna see Verizon cry themselves a little puddle, as people stop using their ancient services, and their monopoly power is extracted from their unwilling grip.
Cell and landline carriers SHOULD FEAR VOIP and other new tech. They should either toss their chips onto the table, or get the hell out of the game. I want my goddam flying cars, and I won't wait any longer, if I have to build 'em myself!
If you think about it, Verizon does not seem to be interested in providing a good service at a low cost. I'll be the local governments, even when botched, will produce a better and cheaper product. Hell, just using Wi-Fi for the local governments' telecommunications (voice + data), they should save tens of thousands of dollars -- minimum.
It seems time to go wardriving with the FBI. In the last interview I did with them, the agent said he's be interested in going out for a wardrive. It's prolly time to schedule that, and pick up a few more soundbites.
Anyone gone wardriving in this area? I'm biased, but I'd say to upload it to a public wardriving repository, and see the data plotted against street-level maps.
There was a story a while ago (can't find it) that talked about $800 trash cans the City of Pittsburgh was deploying. There was an uproar, it died down, the people paid. reduce, reuse, recycle
I produce videos, and so they've got my attention. Free uploads storage? Excellent! I'd vblog more often, and record from odd places, using different cameras, and on different subjects. There really aren't any video blogging sites, and bandwidth is expensive from the handset. What will Google offer us?
I live in Pittsburgh, and there has only been one (way botched) group to do this kind of thing here. In the meantime, we deal with unshielded and untwisted wired. I have had a hard time finding those interested in doing a city-wide wireless network. There are a total of 4 interested people, and nobody has any cash to do this sort of thing!
I heard a statistic a while ago, that it costs less money to install a wireless network, than it does to supply the city with trashbags for the whole year.
Even to this day, drum machines have these odd and silly interfaces. How come nobody dedicates any time to thinking about how to throw together a quick drum track? Pages, and clunky tweakings with little feedback are so lacking, it makes these devices hard to use. Even my RM1X is a silly nightmare.
MythTV is great -- plays shows I record, DVDs, and even plays TV shows downloaded from the Internet (via mPlayer, which still blows my mind). KnoppMyth is easy to setup and install, and works with even old misengineered equipment.
I say this becasue I don't do Windows anymore, and my life is easier for it!
I am a US Citizen, severely underemployed, and I cannot afford college either. While I applaud these kids for their efforts, I don't see why illegal aliens can get federal funding to go to college, and I cannot!
Seriously. When I tried to get financial aid, I was awarded $200 in work-study, which doesn't even cover books for half a semester. It is difficult to apply for school, when you can't even pay your rent!
With Verizon's lobbying power, do you think VOIP will be 'round long?
I figure, build a better mouse trap, get a better mouse. We'll ALWAYS have secure communications available, even if they're annoying. It would, of course, be appropriate for our government (FCC, TSA, DHS) to STAY THE FUCK OUT OF OUR TECHNOLOGY.
But, what the hell do I know, I'm just a terrorist.
Hooray for more space exploration! I was totally rivited to the Cassini/Heugens episode, and loved seeing those pictures of Saturn's rings close-up. The resulting images from the drop to Titan had me pretty-much at the console during the whole experience. Can't wait to read about the results of the comet-smash!
Get me off this crazy planet. Other humans are making the environment (work, atmosphere, etc) unpleasant for me. Will bartend in zero-g for food.

I also had a pirated copy of WIndows -- I think all of them were, including the one that came with my first PC.
I made the switch. I use Fedora Core 3, which seems to make a nice desktop. Hello, Gimp, goodbye Photoshop.
I totally agree, and I want my money back too!
I also want my damn flying cars -- I was promised a flying car!

I guess this would make wearable applications for this battery just not happen. Oh, well, back to old AA-size batteries for me!
Jeez, even as an excuse to go to Las Vegas, and it's CANCELLED AGAIN! Bastards!
