  1. Kword on Special Edition Using Star Office 6.0 · · Score: 1
I'm really suprised no one mentioned kword at all... kword tends to import .doc's quite well and ontop of that KDE itself as supported the print to pdf option since 2.2 days IIRC, as well as the nifty mail pdf option. Furthermore, the UI is far more friendly than OOo or SO- its desktop integration is quite nice as well.

KWord, although addmitedly not as robust in features as OOo really gets the job done, and its auto-recovery feature has saved my ass more than once. For a student, primarily doing simple text papers, kword is an incredible option.

I think you took my point a tad bit far. I commented on the usefulness of competition in this market, as undeniably if there were none microsoft would gain a very powerful position in shaping a lot of future technologies.

We see the same thing emerging in the browser war (it'll never be dead, and thats a Good Thing). With the growth of the KHTML engine and Mozilla (specifically Firebird, which Im using to type this post), IE is beginning to show its age and the market is really beginning to listen to the calls for what needs to be changed.

Some guy asked a better 'what if' recently in another discussion on Palladium. What if systems using this technology are required to access the Internet?

Oh, Microsoft controls the Internet now?

No, but the market leader can push a market, just as IE's near to unilateral popularity has contributed the horrid compatability problems which face so many pages...

Rather this alternative to Palladium does or doesn't work at the fact that OTHER companies are looking into creating this kind of system makes the future of Palladium-esque systems look a lot better. Competition is a Good Thing and handing the reigns to microsoft with out look bad is a bad thing, microsoft or not a company should not have that much power. If this market becomes more diversified we will see better products, rather from microsoft or not, and people will start listening to the peanut gallery ranting for a better system.

Seems to me like you're just begging for large scale trouble. Take the time and make annnnnnnn image for all the computers, making the one or two neccesary for differences in platforms are still going to save you a lot of time in the long run. What happens when you decide you want to update to Mozilla 1.3 or roll out some other app? In the long run it seems like you could greatly increase stability, continuity, and prohibit a lot of headaches like this one if you just slow down and build from the ground up.

    IMHO of course.

I assume that most linux users know how to build a kernel and in the same respect how to apply patches to that kernel (this isn't exactly rocket science.. it wasn't made to confuse you), so are you all really too lazy to build in the patches you want?
