Actually, there are many divisions of Sony. It just so happens that the Sony audio hardware division knew there would be a huge market for selling a CD copier. Sony Music begged them not to release it, but the hardware div didn't give a damn and released it anyways. Sony Music was pretty pissed off of course, but there was nothing they could do about it.

It's been proven that it's no better then the cheaper alternatives. What other kind of hardware will work on this. Will your current nVidia Geforce work? I think, big deal, the Itanium is coming out, are there going to be totally new requirments in order to run a totally new platform?

  4. Horrid! on 3DFX Motion Blur In Action · · Score: 1

Let me just say that I think those screen shots were absolutely terrible. It would be nice if the motion blur applied to specific objects of the game, or is only applied at certain times, like lets say you're shooting oh (ficticious) slime cannon, would you want that to blur, does slime really travel that fast, unless of course it's supersonic slime. Now if I were shooting a rocket launcher or something, it would make more sense. People moving/running at a regular pace should not blur nearly as much as they were in the game! They had a complete seperate "blurred" image! And the one shot they had of some very busy scene was very confusing. All I saw were a few balls of flame and this giant ball of stuff in the middle and couldn't figure out what was what. And as mentioned before, 9 FPS just does not cut it. I think the best FPS they got was around 12, and that STILL sucks! Someone else also said they'd rather get blurred motion effects from being drunk and playing the game, I would to, at least it would look better and the frame rates would be higher! Either way, I think it's wasted technology. Well ok, maybe not wasted, but I'm sure it's not worth the inflated price that this "breakthrough technology" will drive it up to.

I consider myself an OS whore. I run as many OS's at home as I possibly can, and I like having them on seperate boxes. My main computer is still Linux, but for the past year and a half I've been playing with BeOS 4.5 and now 5 and so far, my only real complaints with it has been with software and hardware support. I can't put it on the computer I want simply because BeOS doesn't support the hardware. Actually, at this moment I'm typing this in NetPositive on BeOS. Unfortunatly NetPositive doesn't have many useful things, like the ability to run Java. Although there is a BeOS port of Oprah. Anyways, I find BeOS to be pretty stable, with a very very very quick GUI. Yes I know most of us are in love with the command prompt, but lets face it people, most things these days are created for the GUI.
I feel if BeOS were GPL'ed (which I really don't think it will) both BeOS and Linux will both benefit from it. They both have a lot to offer to each other, especially from those of you that complain about xfree86 being old and crappy. Anyways, thats my $0.02

Eventually I got a new job that required us to have Nextels. Hey, if they were paying, I wasn't going to complain. I can direct connect with all my other friends that have nextels etc. The contract they gave me is a 600 minute national plan, unlimited incoming calls from any type of network, no roaming charges, etc. Too bad I can't direct connect while I'm outside my local area though :( As for how tough the phone is, it's the i1000+ which looks like a wimpy phone due to it being a flip open. One drunken night, I accidentally wound up popping the phone out of the holster while getting into my friends car (I don't drink and drive :) didn't notice I didn't have the phone until I got home. The next day I went back to where my friend was parked and sure enough, there was my phone. From the looks of the battery (battery was down on the cobblestone road), it was definatly run over by at least one car. Replaced the battery, to my surprise IT STILL WORKED!!!! And to think, nextel offers an "industrial" phone thats rubberized on the outside for those that work in construction type environments. Needless to say I was VERY shocked that it still worked. Still using it to :)

  9. Art Critics on Palm Used in Contemporary Art · · Score: 1

Ya know, for a bunch of nerds, we sure have a lot of art critics on /. Especially some that have taken "art classes" or have sold art. They all say this is lame or that it's not art at all. First of all, art is the vision of the creator. Whether or not YOU like it is a completely different story. Personally, I've seen many pieces of art. I've been to the Museum of Modern art in several different cities (NY, SF, DC etc), and I've also seen the priceless works of Michelanglo, Da Vinci etc when I went to Italy. The conclusion that I've come to is, 80% of modern art would be considered as crap to most of you with your standards. Honestly, I don't like modern art either, but this is sadly enough, modern art. For example, the most tragic pieces of Modern Art I saw in these Museums (mind you this are priced at hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars) were either pictures of a red square and a blue circle on a white piece of 8.5 X 11 paper or a bunch of candy wrappers arranged on the ground. That is modern art, disgustingly enough it's considered priceless. Stuff like that doesn't compare to paintings during the renaissance era, or the "Romantics" as some call it. This just goes to show you what TV and other things have done to people. The idea of Creativity has changed, and unfortunatly, so has the perception of "art".

You are completely correct! In my case, I've at least attained an Associates Degree. I was extremely frustrated with my last job (as a Systems Engineer at a law firm, one hint, NEVER work for a law firm!) and started looking for a new job after a year. What brought this on, a change in management. This law firm decided to hire 1) an IT manager that knew NOTHING about technology, and 2) a Sr. Systems Engineer that had no management skills but had decent tech skills. This created an impossible working environment. It took me 8 months before I found a job that would take me, and the only reason why I got the job (I think) is because I had an inside recommendation. I had no certifications, I had an associates degree, but I know a ton about practically every operating system out there, and a ton about hardware and networking. I felt I was a prime candidate for many of the jobs I applied for, but I was turned down for those that had "paper" certifications, or also known as, no skills at all. Sure, I'd interview at these places, and they'd grill me with all sorts of questions about different architectures and troubleshooting situations and I'd answer quickly and correctly, but yet I still didn't get the job. Go figure. Now I work for a consulting company (not head hunter, totally different) and I TOTALLY love my job. Sure, the project manager is a pain, but I never have to see him thank god. Other then that, I basically make my own hours, get to go all over the US, and since I have nothing really holding me back, this is PERFECT for me. Im just wondering what I'm going to go through when it's time for me to start looking again.

There are also digital cameras that are shaped and look almost identical to SLR 35mm's that you are talking about in your post. In all of those you can change the lenses and adjust aperture, focus, exposure time etc. And with the camera I have (Nikon Coolpix 950) I have a 48 mb compact flash card that holds up to 120 VERY high quality pictures. Now I to am a photography buff (have 3 35mm SLR cameras myself) and for many years I have loved my 35mm SLR cameras. If you're going to use pictures for production reasons, film is DEFINATLY the way to go. But if you're going to have them for family reasons etc. I feel digital is the way to go. You can simply take your pictures, transfer them either through floppy, cable (USB, Serial), etc., then send them to your entire family via email. For those that want hard copies that won't last nearly as long, there are photo printers, sure they cost an arm and a leg, but the quality is very good, I should know my friend is a professional photographer for many large companies in DC (TRW, Raytheon, Washington Metro Transit Services, etc) and THEY use digital cameras. Digital photography technology is only getting better, and I can see it some day going beyond the film world.

If you've ever used an all manual SLR 35mm camera, the Nikon Coolpix 950 gives you the ability to adjust everything on it, from manual focus, shutter speed, aperture, style of autofocus, flash types, and the list is practically endless. Some of my favorite features are the "Best Shot Selection" where it takes 10 pictures of the same thing then chooses which one is of higher quality. It uses the compact flash cards and there are tons of adapters, serial, usb, laptop. You can also buy seperate lenses for Telephoto, Wideangle, and Fisheye. Has support for external flashes also. If they did decide to use Linux, imagine what would happen to their budget for IT, it would drop drastically. Sure they could spend the rest of their money on hardware but do you think they really would?
Second of all, as mentioned earlier, the idea of free software scares them. Nothing is free to these people. If it's free, it's worthless or not secure enough to use in their high security environment.
Of all the places that were Linux oriented at FOSE, not ONE of them boasted about security. Gov't places want to know they have a secure system.
The Linux pavillion was decent, but it could have been a WHOLE lot better. With all the different distro's and large software packages, there could have been much better support and presentations of Linux oriented software. API's booth was decent and was at least slightly pointed in the right direction. It makes me sick to say it, but Corel was taking the proper approach. I decided to put myself through some of the torture of their demonstrations, and from what I saw, they were pursuing the people like they should have. During the demonstration of WordPerfect Office 2000, they made sure to continually say "(so and so package) runs, looks, and has the same features under Linux or Windows" and would also say that it was running under Linux. This is what companies need to see! They need to see that Linux DOES in fact have a GUI (which some people STILL think it doesn't), and that it DOES have a place at the job!
On a more generalized note, I can easily see Linux at the job site, especially in corporations which are mainly concerned with word processing, presentations, accounting etc. As for the home computer, it probably won't make it very soon, but do we REALLY want that?
