Nobody has found terrorists at any point in history with chemical analysis machines, and they've been in use for years (they can't detect a ceramic knife).
If *I* were going to organise a 9/11-style hijacking with guys taking over a plane with hand-to-hand combat, I'd get them all trained in flint knapping and have them each carry on a couple of glass 'paperweights'.
No need to have any visible weapon; just go to the toilet midflight and *make* a weapon out of glass ovoids.
Theres a lot to be said for the old 'banging the rocks together'.
create a geo-political climate which removes the incentive to be a terrorist (whith the U.S. has failed miserably at).
Worse than 'failed miserably'; they have given huge incentives to terrorists. Probably without meaning to, I'm no conspiracy nut.
If some anti-social group, such as is commonly referred to as 'terrorists', wanted to cause disruption they don't actually need to create a real threat any more; all they need do is to create the rumor among so-called 'intelligence' communities of some hypothetical threat.
Lets say they construct a rumor that 'terrorists plan to take over an aircraft by using their fingernails' and all passengers in paranoid regimes (US/UK) will have to trim their fingernails before being allowed to board.
They could come out with some rumor that they are going to use explosives that look like paper and noone will be allowed to take any paper or cardboard products on board.
All it takes is a rumor in the right place and one could cause major distruption. No need for any real threat at all, no need to risk operatives at all.
Terrorism is cheap these days and the US/UK are helping to keep the cost down.
The fact that you can't do anything in Windows without being the admin has always been a major source of problems.
I agree, but theres no *point* in doing anything in Windows without being admin.
There is no point in running Windows as a non-priviledged user.
If you doubt my word, log into your favorite Windows as your unpriviledged user and set up a scheduled task to run cmd.exe
When the scheduled task runs and you get a command window try and see what you *cannot* do on the system...
(I used to put a great deal of effort into running as an unpriviledged user; I spent hours trying to get games to run without having to be Admin. It seems that I totally wasted my time. Thanks, Bill.)
It seems to me that there has been a progressive restriction on Americans travelling around their own country.
Think about the 55mph speed limit for example.
How realistic is it to travel across the country at 55mph?
Any journey further than about 400 miles becomes an overnight trip.
Compare that to nations with speed limits of 100mph. They effectively have twice the day-trip radius of Americans.
Why should Americans have to drive at such a snails pace over such vast distances when Germans (for example) have effectively no speed restrictions (on the autobahn) and their country it tiny by comparison?
If you wanted to restrict the ability of Americans to travel freely around their own country (because its such a large country) this is where you'd start.
You'd then restrict rail travel making the service so bad that noone wants to travel by rail anymore, meaning less revenue for the rail system and therefore meaning cutbacks in service until its just not realistic any more.
You'd then start to constrict air travel making it very inconvenient and prone to unexpected delays due to oh I don't know lets see now how about 'security concerns'?
Seriously, the only way to stop this stuff in the long term is cooperation and a sharing of cultures.
Great idea, the only problem is that both sides (ie the Anglo-American Axis and the Pan-Islamic fundamentalists) want everyone else in the world to adopt their respective cultural values and to cooperate, unilateraly in a very one-sided, one-way, master-slave arrangement.
I remember as a kid growing up in the UK we had a joke that the Soviets are raised from childhood indoctrinated in the belief that the Americans have three nostrils and eat babies whereas the Ameridans were raised from childhood brainwashed into believing that the Soviets have three nostrils and eat babies.
Of course everyone in Europe knew as a scientifically proven *fact* that both Americans *AND* Soviets have three nostrils and feed primarily on babies.
What I am trying to get at is that the Palestinians and the Lebanese are far less of a threat to Israel than Israel is to them.
The statistics tell the story; more than 10 times as many people are killed by Israel than are killed by all of the Arab terrorist organisations combined (meaning Israelis killed by Arab terrorists ie not including 911 which happened in the USA).
By these standards it seems implausible that any rational argument could be put forward to the effect that the Palestinians or Lebanese are somehow a dreadful threat to Israel.
One of my favorite technologies from the Traveller/Striker universe... nuclear dampers.
It was supposed to increase or decrease decay of nuclear materials -- at a distance.
A fun use of such a device is to neutralise an enemies nuclear arsenal and then starting a war with them. They then fire their nukes which does... nothing much at all.
If only we could have these in the real world.
Or at least a bio-engineered organism that eats black powder...
Its just interesting to note that the Israelis seem to be able to maintain a very precise 10-1 kill ratio. As if they say 'ah 10 Israelis have been killed. Where can we find 100 Arabs to kill... lets bomb over there, that should net us at least 40 to start with'.
And the population density of, eg, the Gaza strip is so high that any attack of any form can be expected to kill more civilian 'hostages' there than any attack emmanating from the Gaza strip aimed at Israel.
Israel is not attacking Lebanon, they are attacking Hezbollah who, like the cowards they are, hide (sometime forcibly) amongst the civilians, the women, the children, so that when there is collateral damage during an attack on Hezbollah targets the media instantly reports that Israel is bombing women and children.
Dude. The good guy doesn't actually shoot the hostage.
That was just a movie.
You don't shoot the hostages in order to get to the terrorists.
Thats just dumb. It makes you a terrorist as well.

Pakistan have always been our allies.
We are at war with Iran. We have always been at war with Iran.

You're assuming that the purpose of the airport security checks is to prevent terrorists from taking bombs onto planes.
The purpose is to deter people from travelling.
Its just a much more imaginative ploy than the old Soviet Union where they just didn't give you a passport...
it would be lightbulbs.
Or zeppelins.
Or puffins also I think maybe they go quite high too maybe not as high as the moon coz the moon is very high.
(For those who don't get the pop-culture reference, It makes flash worthwhile).
As Jefferson said, "that government governs best which governs least".
I prefer Lao Tzu's phrasing...
"One should govern a large state just as one would cook a small fish; lightly. Very lightly."

I don't know about that, for the USA at least.
It seems to me that there has been a progressive restriction on Americans travelling around their own country.

It's not like these people are going to bust into internet cafe's, pick the lock and change the keyboard without anybody noticing.
A few years back a bank in some Israeli town was broken into.
The police were called but nothing seemed to have been stolen and they though nothing of it.
A few months later large amounts of cash started vanishing from accounts there.
It turned out that someone had broken in and installed a wireless access point.
Yet, nobody says Budge was stupid. Nor that he was unenterprising.
Don't forget the dictionary. Its pretty good.
Ohhhh... That's right. Anything we don't like kids doing must cause ADHD.
You've hit the nail on the head; it is the 'not liking kids doing anything' that causes ADHD.
The fact that Arabs believe the same about the Israelis means that the situation is completely unsalvageable.
I vote that both sides vacate the planet forthwith.
Our neighbors are firing Katyusha rockets at us.
And just like the guy in the article, you arn't doing anything to inflame the situation at all!
Since when was being anti-social a crime?
In the UK being anti-social isn't itself a crime.
But if you are anti-social, they get to make up special laws, just for you.
They are called 'Anti-Social Behavior Orders' or ASBOs.
And then they can make just about anything a crime. For you.
Sooner or later someone will get one like:
"Must not raise right hand above waist height in a public place or where likely to be viewed from a public place".
What I am trying to get at is that the Palestinians and the Lebanese are far less of a threat to Israel than Israel is to them.

The lines of threat go the other way around.

If you have reason to believe a lot MORE innocent people will die due to inaction, then yes, you DO shoot the hostages.
Ok then so *not* when you would be killing 10 hostages to save 1 non-hostage?
Or to put it in context, about 500 Lebanese for about 50 Israelis?
Israel is not attacking Lebanon, they are attacking Hezbollah who, like the cowards they are, hide (sometime forcibly) amongst the civilians, the women, the children, so that when there is collateral damage during an attack on Hezbollah targets the media instantly reports that Israel is bombing women and children.

How about raiding my fridge?
Phew... well whenever people let me into their house I've always *assumed* that they want me to raid their fridge...
Its better than letting me get hungry
Halleluljah Sister, I hear you.
I have seen too much. I can cry no more. I want to know how to stop caring now.
Weed. Large quantities of weed.
is using a computer with known remote security exploits 'acting in a way'?
Now you come to mention it, under the terms of the act, even turning such a computer *on* would be 'acting in a way'.
Importing such a computer or such an operating system would also be covered.
This is old fashion "run the gypsies out of town" style vigilante justice
And pretty soon many more people in the UK will understand precisely why Gypsies are so damn paranoid and distrusting of, well of everyone really.
Perhaps if you are comparing this to crimes where people get sent to jail, yes. But nobody is going to jail here, the comparison isn't appropriate.
You go to jail if you violate the ASBO.
Also, there is no limit nor guideline on the conditions that can be imposed by an ASBO.
All that is needed to put a troublemaker away is an ASBO that precludes them from raising their left hand above their waist and then wait...
