Some of these "password requirements" actively force weaker passwords, in that they enforce a maximum length! I've seen some that force a 12 character maximum, making the xkcd 4 common word technique unusable, especially since they often stupidly require mixed case and a numeric and a special char.

My personal favorite was the bank that required my password to have exactly one number, at least one upper case character and exactly one special character. With a maximum length of 8 characters.

The AEC, Australian Electoral Commission, is held at arms length from the ruling party government. It requires an act of parliament to change any of the rules and given the make-up of the Australian government it would be very difficult for one party to pass rules that favour them over the other.

In addition there is a 3 person body which consists of either a current or retired federal judge, a statistician and the current head of the AEC. They are charged with the management of the process and oversight of the AEC to ensure accuracy of the election.

It's worth noting though that there is a huge difference in attitude between Australia and the US at election time. Australia doesn't have the rallies or the level of energy that the US has around an election. I just can't imagine people trying to block others from voting here.

Yeah sorry, you put all that work into your response but I wasn't thinking about how its done in Aussie, rather how it might be implemented in the USA.

I don't think there is a Republican party in Aus who might want to stop blacks and hispanics from voting

That post is not entirely wrong. Viral loads in mid-latitude waters correlate with bacterial load in many cases. Testing for bacterial load is cheaper, which is why that's frequently done. However, the bacterial load tends to be lower in tropical and in salty waters. There isn't a lot of bacteria in the water around Rio. However, it isn't necessarily an indicator of a corresponding low viral load under the conditions in Rio. Bacterial infections really are pretty unlikely, but viral infections are a more realistic concern.

Not sure if this is related but viruses do live a lot longer on cold surfaces than warm. Thats why you get a 'flu season'. The chemical reactions which would break down the viral casing is retarded in cold conditions.

Just go compulsory voting. If you are on the register you must vote. If you want to argue that you should have the right to not vote then turn up, get your name crossed off and draw a giant dick and balls on the ballot sheet.

If you want to have electronic voting have an option that says "I do not wish to vote, so register my vote as informal, this means my vote will not count" and make them hit through 5 are you sures.

If everyone has to vote it makes impersonating someone else really really hard as those people have to vote as well. As soon as the same person gets marked off you have problems.

And free transport to the polling station for the compulsory voting is provided, right?

As a convinced European I find it highly amusing that the main "leave" campaign guys are now running away and officially stating that they have no idea what they actually planned (Yeah, we heavily lied in order to get you to approve a plan which we don't have, because it does not make any deeper sense).

I hope that the EU gives them choice between coming back without any special status, joining the Euro and the Schengen zone or remaining in "splendid isolation". In case of the latter: not terrible for the rest of the EU - one competitor is gone, and in 30 years there will be a new developing country with cheap labor.

The thing is I can kind of understand why this has happened; the *English*, overall, never liked to think of themselves as being part of something bigger than themselves. They always feel more comfortable being the big deal. Thats why they always demanded special status in the EU. Thats why they had the Empire. Thats why they had the British Commonwealth (they weren't *part* of the British Commonwealth; they WERE the British Commonwealth and all the other nations were *seen* as just hangers on, not even really independent. Now its the Commonwealth of Nations and I bet they are not so interested in it any more).

Even within the United Kingdom, the English don't like to see themselves as part of something bigger than themselves; even within that context they like to see themselves as THE big thing and Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland are just 'hangers on'.

This is beautifully illustrated by the voting patterns in the Brexit referendum; Scots and Northern Irish and the more Welsh parts of Wales voted to remain. (The rest of Wales is just too dominated by the English, I bet they still refer to themselves as 'Welsh', which comes from a Saxon word for 'foreigner'. Yes, the Welsh are foreigners in their own land).
