    Anyone says anything bad about China/Chinese and some PC do-gooder brings up race.

    It isn't about race, it's about the proven track record of a government tainting their country's products with viruses, trojans and backdoors.

    The fact that they play the race card just makes them look more guilty.

    Heres news for you; no matter who you are, even if you work for these people, even if you are a corporate executive or member of your congress or senate YOU ARE THE ENEMY who this is used against.

    I was working as a Linux sysadmin. Using a Linux workstation I found I spent a lot of my time configuring and customising my UI (oooo compiz! etc). I tried a Windows workstation; same thing.

    Then I changed to OSX. Boy, did I get more work done. OSX is so uncustomisable that you just don't bother. The color of the 'gumdrop buttons'? In the kernel. If you want to change them you have to apply some very low level hacks. If theres a system update and you aren't very very careful your Mac becomes a 'brick'.

    Also, my Mac Pro was an excellent Unix workstation. Seriously. And with a decent UI and integration.

    But its all supervised by judges!

    (I guess, given the scale of it, this means all the spooks at the NSA are judges. Maybe they'll soon make all the street cops judges too, that would work out well I'm sure. Theres probably a cadet at the academy now who can't wait to have 'Judge' in front of his name. Cadet Dredd).

    There will always be people who want to commit crimes of theft.

    However, we can thin their ranks a bit. Support the death penalty for cyberthieves (at least in Texas).

    Not just whether it happened but the official figure on the number of dead. Question that "oh maybe it was 100,000 less than the official version" and its jail time.

    The problem is that it encourages the neo-nazis because some people get the feeling that the government is trying to cover something up.

    Europe has its own freedom problems. Both sides do different things well. While it's great to ignore all the negatives to make statements like this, remember that one side isn't necessarily better than the other.

    Are there any historical events in the USA that you aren't allowed to question the official account of?

    In Europe you get in big trouble for questioning the official version of the holocaust. Which sets it up for conspiracy theorists very nicely. I mean, imagine if in the USA it was illegal to claim that the moon landings never happened.

    That this happens shows me that they realy optimize their air conditioning for energy consumption.

    Traditionally the approach would have been: "Dont think, cool down and re-heat the air constantly to dehumidify it sufficiently". So traditionally you do this dumb with a lot of energy, even if its not needed at all times. What we probably see there is that some control could not (predict or) handle some drop in the inner load (electrial power) in the data center.

    The Facebook Oregon datacenter doesn't 'have' air conditioning.

    The building is an 'air conditioner'. Its an experimental design...

    Do you actually know how the Facebook Oregon datacenter works?

    It doesn't *have* HVAC. The building *is* HVAC: The entire building is one very very large HVAC unit.

    HVAC units have 'efficiency of scale'; as you build them larger they get more efficient. Thats what Facebook was aiming at. Unfortunately its a relatively new development in building and datacenter design and clearly has some bugs to work out!

    In the UK they do even better; obviously someone planning a terrorist attack would benefit from knowing their rights. In the UK its illegal to possess ANY INFORMATION which could be useful to someone planning a terrorist attack. Therefore anyone interacting with the police in the UK who shows that they know their rights can be detained on terrorism charges.

    I think character levels is one of the worst things to have in an MMO, the way Eve does it is good but the backstabbing psychopathy in Eve really puts me off (its not roleplaying, its people being dicks). What I'd like to see is a game that encourages RP rather than a game that merely pays lip service to the RP in MMORPG.

    The thing is, theres barely any RP element in WoW. Nor any MMO.

    Theres a bare handful of players who empathise with their character in any way at all, or have any kind of backstory for their character. Its just not part of the mindset; its more like "pew pew pew I get to blow stuffs up with ma lazors/lightning bolts/2 handed sword of buttkicking". Thats about how shallow it is compared to the RPG genre.

    Notice how we refer to them as MMO now, not MMORPG?

    But hey if you know an actual MMORPG please tell me about it.

    You clearly value your conscience and/or your good name more than you value squeezing every drop of money out of every country you come into contact with.

    But remember, it also costs money to enforce every countries stupid, ignorant, arrogant demands.

    Fuck them. When their populations find their logins blocked with a page saying "Because of foolish demands by your government, we are unable to bring you this service." the democratic nations will change their tune pretty fast. The non-democratic ones? Fuck with them the opposite way; set up proxy servers and VPNs for people in those countries to get the Facebook they want.

    And facebook does business in Italy? So Italian courts have jurisdiction over facebook. They can argue US 1st amendment all they want, it's just not relevant.

    If I were mr Face I'd just shut down all Facebook accounts in Italy.
