  1. VHS? Does anyone still buy that? on Circuit City Phases Out VHS · · Score: 1

To be honest, I don't think I can say I have ever purchased a VHS cassette. When I decided to buy a player for movies, DVD was starting to gain wide acceptance, though VHS was still strong. I decided to go DVD even though the cost of movies was often much more expensive than the VHS equivalent. I must say that I am quite pleased with the results. The better sound and image quality make up for the price, plus the fact that I really only buy Anime videos. which on DVD. provide many more features like multiple episodes, multiple language tracks and some other extras usually. With the price of DVD players in the $100 to $150 range anyway, if you were looking to get a new video player, why not go DVD anyway. The only downside is of course the hundreds of dollars you might have invested in a VHS movie library and the fact you can't record off of the TV with DVD. Once recordable DVD becomes mainstream (and they have a standard that is set in stone), VHS will be as foriegn to youngsters as the 8-track is to me :)

  2. I HATE Oracles!! on California + Oracle = $95 Million Fiasco · · Score: 1

God I hate Oracle. If it is not them trying to set up a national ID system, to overcharging their customers (and apparently state governments as well), to false advertisements, to that weasle of a CEO, Larry "Slim" Ellison. It seems everytime I read the news this company is screwing somebody, whether it is locking their customers into an outrageously high contract for crappy software, to giving their execs the boot. I just hope one day they will subcome to a fate like Enron and we all can have a good laugh at their expense!

Bill Gates! Hold on, just think for a minute. Just think about what he has done for Microsoft and Windows! He has taken the company from some small two-bit operation to a global conglomeration that devours enemies in a single breath. Just think of what he could do for Linux! In just a few years, Linux would be on every desktop, it will be crushing the competition like *BSD, and will crash and random intervals just for the hell of it. It probably would be free anymore either tho :)

  4. Re:SQL servers and nutshells on Linux Grabs World Record For TPC-H Benchmark · · Score: 1

There are a few books out on DB/2 for all platforms (Linux included). The one I have sitting on my monitor right now is for DB/2 7.1 with the authors Baklarz and Wong. It is unfortunate that DB/2 does not get as much publicity as the diehard windbag ellison does. When you begin really comparing the two databases, DB/2 is the clear performance/cost choice. I have done DBA work on several databases, and DB/2 is my favorite. My company does have some SQL servers, but let me tell you, they might win some irrelavent benchmark, but they do NOT win any stability awards. We are always having trouble with SQL (we like to call it squeal :) DB/2 on the otherhand purrs along just fine.

I agree as well. Nothing pisses me off more than when I think I am going to a legitimate site, and end up seeing some animated gif of some chick and a horse. By excluding them to a couple of separate TLDs, it would be much easier for schools and libraries to filter explicit porn, instead of things like birth control and phycology material relating to sex.

  6. Sucks to be those Mice! on Bone Marrow Can Grow New Brain Cells · · Score: 1

This discovery is certainly an inportant one. With regeneration of the brain and spinal cord cells, people who have been delt an unlucky hand of cards can now find new funtionality with their bodies. Only thing is, it would really suck to be those mice. Have your marrow killed off by raditaion, then have new marrow injected in your tail, only to be killed off later. I like the idea of curing humans, but I only hope one day computers will grow advanced enough that we can fully simulate human body conditions instead of killing off tens of millions of animals every year. I'll get off my podeum now :)

I have always like C|Net for their unbiasedness, or at least they do a good job of hiding it. They like to stick it the mainstream often, especailly Microsoft, delievering blunt, and hopefully accurate portrayls.

  8. Oracle and AIX???? on Preventing Vendors From Playing The Blame Game? · · Score: 1

Why would you want to use anything other than DB/2 with AIX? I have been a lifelong DBA and have tried many combos, some which I am ashamed of :) I think DB/2, especially the 7.1 version just out, has come a long way, and certainly kicks SQL's butt (as released in a benchmark last week. I think www.infoworld.com ran the story) and Oracle won't submit to benchmarks, which makes me think they lack in speed as well. Plus the easy to use interface of DB/2 (command center is a godsend) mixed with bulletproof stability, who could ask for anything more?

It already bugs me that Micro$oft has the dough to keep down competition in almost every field, but if Netscape hangs up their hat, I am going to feel really dominated by Redmond. Netscape was that shinning light of inspiration to keep battling MS no matter what. I hope this article is based on wrong info, it would be a shame to have IE be the only updated browser out there (can you say no reguard for W3 standards). MS will come out eth their own "better" versions of everything from XML to HTML tags, and there will be no other browser big enough to stop it. Sounds like something from 1984, with MS as big brother. :)
