Even tho this post is late, it's just to proove a point...

I am not sure this is what he was referring to. The URL was not a M$ URL, but rather a .Net pet store type thing, but not the pet store. He spoke of singleton-type patterns and how new they were and how M$ thinks of everything, etc.

Yes, the URL you refer to is the .Net version of Sun's J2EE design patterns, and yes, I do understand the difference between academic design patterns and technology specific concepts. I am finishing my software engineering Masters thesis on the topic, so please don't lecture me on what I may and may not understand.

    Absolutely!

I am a software engineer and have written apps in Java, VB, and PERL. I have a friend who has been an M$ developer for about 5 years, and just called me a month or 2 ago to let me know that there is this thing called "design patterns" ... just for .Net. There is some M$ website that apparently broke the lid open on the concept of patterns this year (don't know URL). Of course, so did Christopher Alexander in the late 70's, and over 100 others since then... but M$ didn't endorse them until this year. My friend is cool and all, but the general software engineering ignorance was staggering.

  6. Re:Two words ... College radio on Why (FM, Not XM) Radio Sucks · · Score: 1
I completely agree, but your argument has 1 major flaw... most college radio stations only pump their signal within 15 feet outside the college campus itself. The minute you go to that 16th foot, you've lost the signal. Therefore, this is not a viable alternative.

Here in Chicago, the 3rd largest city in the U.S. last time I checked, the radio station choices are the most miserable I have ever experienced in any city (I think Dallas and San Fran have the best from my expereince). I have no problem paying for XM, GM, KM, or any M since it saves me from the following:

    1. 5 minutes of music and 100 minutes of commercials, 5 minutes of music, 100 minutes...
    2. The new phenomenon of DJ's, during their talk time, pitching products... but making it seem like a conversation with the traffic gal, so we as listeners are just completely fooled! Damn they are soooo clever. Eric and Kathy (101.9 FM) are the most guilty of this and should be fired.
    3. Playlists of only 25 bands or so, whatever the genre.
    4. We only have really 2 alternative/rock stations in Chicago... TWO! 101.1 FM and 94.7 FM. When I can go from one station to the other, every day, and hear the exact same song playing on both, there's a major f'ing problem. If we had 100 rock/alterative stations, then OK.
    5. Mancow Muller (and others like him... EXCEPT STERN!!!! BABABOOOOEY!!!). Yes, we are the home of Mancow. If you don't know who he is, thank the diety of your choice and go on with your life. But if you must know, imagine a completely corporate manufactured Howard Stern for severely uneducated males (age 13 - 35), also those who are on or watch Jerry Springer regularly. No joke.
    6. Rediculous censorship rules. Maybe this is the same on XM, but how come a DJ can say "asshole", but it is bleeped out of a song? How come a DJ can say "God dammit", but it is bleeped out of a song?
Heck, even if XM fails, I'd also would support NPR style radio stations for Jazz, Trance and Ambient music, Rock, etc.

I am finishing my MS in Software Engineering at DePaul University. It seems you are in the same situation that I am. If your university is research based (like DePaul), then you're screwed. 95% of the profs will never care about you or the classes they teach because their jobs and focus are on research and research grants. Not you. If you are at a teaching university, then you should be OK... unless you've had a bad rash of profs lately. Then there's nothing you can do.

  9. Re:Everyone always overlooks the real root motive on Still More RIAA News · · Score: 1
If what you say is true, why wouldn't the RIAA start trying to severly influence the artists that the record labels sign? As you know, the amount of crap on the radio is astounding. If they want more $$, they need to pull strings or whatever to make labels stop signing bands like Chumbawamba.

Also, out of curiosity, what would happen to the music industry if the RIAA folded tomorrow? All that was left was bands and labels?

"Your choices in console games are 10,000 mutations of Tekken or Super Ultra Mario Brothers;"

You are absolutely correct, and for people like me, that's why console games are so popular. There are those of us who realize that we have no self conrol when it comes to PC gaming. Some of us ignore that, or can afford that asset to our lifestyle. But some of us want to stay married, like I do. Therefore, console games give me the gaming fix I need without geting too in depth (the 1000 flavors of Tekken), which would mean divorce.

You are absolutely correct. My mom and sister love IE. They think all the stuff I tell them is for techie geeky people and programmers like me. Why do they ever need to bother until they themselves get hacked. However, the buggyness and crashes of the Windows 98 and 2000 Operating Systems themselves are making them reconsider their next PC purchases and I think they will switch to Macs.
