  1. Re:Halo 2 on 2004 Indie Games of the Year · · Score: 1

i played doom 2 before i played doom, and commander keen i don't believe i've ever touched. but i can understand that a new engine is a little much to ask of most sequels. but hopping into halo 2 just to see all the worn out enemies and textures again was a bit annoying. as for the weapons, i think completely new is a little giving, imo a lot of the weapons(human vs. covenant) are a lot closer to each other than i'd prefer. i have played the game, i enjoyed it but i did it find it disappointing. i don't play xbox live, and found the singleplayer and overall changes to the game hardly justifying the pricetag and hype for someone who is mostly interested in singleplayer and small lan-play(usually one xbox.) i guess i have to say that i was bored and tired with the first halo, and going into halo 2 i was hoping for a rejuvination and a bit more change to the gameplay itself.

I bought the game and played it through, and i enjoyed it. but to me it honestly seems very much more like expansion pack material than sequel material. a sequel to me atleast generally implies a new engine, or atleast some drastic changes. we've got some a few new graphics, maybe one new gun and one new vehicle, dual-wielding, hi-jacking vehicles, and a whole mess of re-used content on(what appears to me to be) the halo 1 engine. that sounds more like the feature list of most good expansion packs than most good sequels. hell Blizzard has released patches with more changes.

the license could be better, particularly the part about them being granted back the rights to any modifications, but its nice to see microsoft releasing the source for anything at this point. :)

i agree with the general tone of don't spend your money on this. if you can talk to everybody and get everybody to chip in equally that would be a much better situation for YOU. on the whole of the matter i would generally advise paying/getting somebody who knows what the hell they are doing, if you try to do it yourself and it fucks up, you're screwed. plus if ideally you are able to split this atleast 6-10 ways the additional cost of hiring somebody is split as well. just the 2 cents of someone who knows little.

installed non-beta client w/o cache. didn't work quite right, uninstalled, cleared directory, reinstalled, uninstalled, reinstalled cache version from bittorrent, runs the game now, friends system has been up and down. network is a little shaky but its under pretty heavy traffic. i've been through worse, and i'm sure plenty of you have too so quit yer complaining.
