Funny.
Back at LWE in NYC this Spring, Loki approached the now defunct Chilliware, looking for a buyout.
Many phone calls and meetings later, a sum of $250,000 was reached; this would give Chilliware 100% rights to Loki software.
$250k aint alot of cash folks. Any company that can go under for that small an amount, well. Sheesh...
BTW, other companies that almost sold out to Chilliware:
*GNUCash (Houston, we have a problem...)
*Hancom
*EasyLinux (Hi Hans!)
Luckily, Chilliware imploded, thanks to the CEO's wandering eye and hands.
-----------------
Oh yeah, I have the source for iceSculptor, Mentor and Mohawk, if anyone wants to buy it...Chilliware owes me some big cash, and since none of the 'principals' will respond, I'll take it this way instead.

Yep. this guy's exactly right. MSN is just another ISP...most of their suburban lines are sub-let through national chains. They're *almost* a virtual ISP. I have a lil P200 (fine, yes, it's running Linux) that acts as a dialer and dhcp server, and all I have to do is use "MSN/username" in the dialing script. Works like a charm. Nary a butterfly to be found.
OK...so we agree that MS' IIS is at fault for this worm. A bug in the software is a 'bad thing'. However, ALL software is buggy. Repeat, ALL. How many patches have been made for Apache or Perl or ProFTPD or ftpd? Dozens...
Microsoft has done what they have to do, take the public beating and made a patch available. If Apache were a company, would there be the same outcry if this worm affected it? Probably not, because, outside of the Redmond campus, Apache is not reviled and hated.
Calls for a class action suit and legal recourse are totally opposite of what should be advocated on this forum...since when is litigation the answer? (Ask Dmitri...)Why not contact the companies affected and offer your services in promoting a BSD or Linux? Like Taco implied a few weeks ago, bashing is out; promotion is IN!
isn't it interesting that HP patents are OK with Slashdot? Could it have something to with the banner ads HP is running? A little journalistic hypcricy? Naaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh, not here!
Actually, the more I think about it, a combination of CSS within the menus is not so far fetched. Imagine having multiple styles on a DVD, then applying a CSS to them. The user could then customize the appearance of the menus. This would be really cool for consumer DVDs like wedding videos, or anything that was created for an individual or specific entity. Just a thought...
You essentially matched all of my points with validation...yet you say I have no idea what I am talking about.
You're exactly right, no application can be 'hack proof'.
Again, I agree...all OS' are 'hackable', but Windows is a little less so than most. (Mainly due to the fact that it's what the script kiddies use.)
NO ONE uses signatures or the means to validate them except for the big boys, which is too bad, as it would alleviate many of the 'viruses' and 'trojans' we see on the 6 o'clock news.
Calm down; take a pill...I think we're on the same side.
Someone told him he could get a meal at the Montgomery Street Inn, where he now stays. He volunteers in the shelter's computer lab, teaching residents how to use computers."
There ya go! Teach them a skill that...will..get... them... a... good...er. Hey! Let's build a snowman!
Where's the irony I missed? When you need a technical problem solved, where do you turn? To technical people. Slashdot is a resource of several thousand knowledgeable people...and several hundred thousand trolls. I was simply using the resources available to me. The assumption that I will do 'anything i am told' is ludicrous. I am aware that there is a specific resolution to my problem, and solicited THAT information...not 'tips-n-tricks'. Fortunately, nearly everyone saw it for what it was, and attempted to help or to at least provide useful information. Except you. :-) Have a great day.
Oh, by the way, nothing has worked yet, KEEP TRYING GUYS!
Seeking to capture more of this population, Sony recently announced that it would ship a product in June that lets consumers record TV programs onto DVDs from their computer.
Does anyone have any info on this? Sounds like it would just about have to be a similiar setup, with mpeg capabilities. How great would this be? I hope this means simply DVD-r. PLEASE, let it mean DVD-r...

Here's the thing: I didn't ask for tech support. I asked for opinions. we don't want a cobbled together solution. We are the only ISP in our area (remote mountain town), a company that has been around for over 60 years in telecom. We can't afford to make a mistake.
Now, the beauty of Slashdot is that it is read by thousands of people with real world experience, day to day experience. I've been here for a long time...I spend alot of time here...I value *some* of the opinions I read here. As far as I am concerned, 'Asking Slashdot' = 'asking a friend/usenet/irc'. When you have a wealth of information, you utilize it. That's how things get done in the Real World [tm].
My postings here should not reflect on my employer.
The FM was R several dozen times...iPlanet was INSTALLED several dozen times ( i am not exaggerating. we were on the phone with those guys for hours at a time, doing it over and over). About three hours after I submitted this 'ask slashdot', we hit a breakthrough. Turns out that our error, which occcured when installing the IDA portion, was based on a configuration anomoly in resolv.conf. (iPlanet support said that this would actually be added to the preinstall readme file. Nice. )We added two lines, changed one more, and BAM. It's Working. However, during the 6 weeks we had this problem, we learned about several interesting alternatives, and we are not totally adverse to changing, given the delay and support nightmare we just experienced.
InstallShield offers a Linux version now...has for awhile. Too bad the Linux companies won't use it. It is Java based, and it is pretty damned cool. And, of course, you can view files and thier install paths with the setup list. Would probably help in cases like this...
Sorry to be offtopic, but I just saw the preview for Swordfish, with John Travolta, and you can clearly hear "The best CRACKERS in the world can do that in..." (that's a paraphrase, but he does say 'cracker' instead of hacker.
Cool to see the distinction made...at least in the preview. The text in the link above says 'hacker'. Sigh.
"`You ARE Zaphod Beeblebrox?'
`Yeah,' said Zaphod, `but don't shout it out or they'll all want one.'
`THE Zaphod Beeblebrox?'
`No, just A Zaphod Bebblebrox, didn't you hear I come in six packs?'
`But sir,' it squealed, `I just heard on the sub-ether radio report. It said you were dead...'
`Yeah, that's right, I just haven't stopped moving yet.'"
I was the first employee (read:non-investor) hired, and the last employee screwed.
Throughout the entire ordeal, I was the 'technical guy'.
That a decent enough source?
:-)
