You?re wrong. Our brains/eyes are pretty good at aligning to make a good picture. Think of looking at an object close or far away. As you look at your finger 6 inches away your eyes are rather cross-eyed though the finger is in perfect focus. As the object is further away your eyes adjust and straighten out. The eye automatically finds that point where the images come into congruence. Another example: In those 3D pattern pictures there is actually a range of distances you can be from them. The trick is not being at the exact centimeter away but rather having your eyes crossed the correct amount. There will be some limitation one viewable angel and distances but not so much as to make them difficult to use. Our brains/eyes are pretty good at aligning to make a good picture. 17. The Original Humboldt County KSR on Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race · · Score: 2, Interesting

These things blow the pants off any case mod artists. Arcata's started in '69 and is ass loads of fun. The race lasts 3 days and you have to travel over road, ocean (well a shallow bay), sand dunes, and even past the worlds most ill conceived nuclear power plant*. All sculptures must be human powered, self contained, and the operator cannot touch the ground. Throw in a couple more rules like mandatory teddy bear and cookies (must bribe the judges or your automatically disqualified [RTF rule book]) all in an attempt to win the grand prize (a lemon of a used car rewarded to the contraption coming in dead middle) and you can have a right good time.

*The 63-megawatt power plant was the first commercial operation of its kind in California and the seventh in the nation when it began operating in August 1963. The plant was shutdown in July 1976 for maintenance at the same time three earthquake faults were found nearby, including one directly below. The "Triple Junction" is one of the few places in the world where three tectonic plate boundaries meet on or close to land. The power plant was never reopened.

  18. It was not a gateway on Cracker Gains Access to 2.2 Million Credit Cards · · Score: 2, Insightful

2.2 million cards isn't that many so I don't think it was a major gateway. I bet some vender kept credit cards on record and had lousy security. Also if there was a gateway problem we would see some missing AmEx and Discover. Lots of venders just accept Visa and Master (it's the basic package man)

We use a randomly generated code specific to each transaction, user, time, and credit card that only our bank (in theory) can track back to an actual credit card. We don't know and therefore don't have any of our customer's credit cards.

  20. No prions in poo on Hardcore Waste Recycling · · Score: 2, Informative

A Prion is a protein (read : cellular machinery) are found almost exclusively in nervous tissue. It seems to be a protein (read : cellular machinery) That's why we get all the cool prion diseases by cannibalism of nervous tissue (cows eating cows -BSE, people eating people -KURU, and transplantation -CJD). It's true it hard as hell to destroy but its even harder to get. Prion diseases spread (or so they think -my studies are a couple years old and biology moves faster then the tech world) when one such protein in a beta configuration bounces into a protein in alpha configuration. These collisions are unlikely but obviously exponential. Alpha prions are present in all mammals and do no harm (not sure exactly what they do do [ha -more poop] as mice genetically engineered without apha prions seem just fine) while Beta prions turn you in to a driveling madman with actual large holes in your brain.

Not sure where the beta configuration comes from in the first place -maybe random -but one could imagine that given exponential growth with very low transmissibility then one would need several lifetimes (as in recycling nervous tissue) to develop the disease. CJD has a genetic component -maybe those people make beta prions right from the start but then take 50 years to show.

So the only way you can get it from poop is if there is lots of neural tissue in your shit -which is gross just to think about. Plus then your main exposure would be whatever stewed meat you had in the first place. (Indecently the reason why the Brits outlawed the beef on the bone is case there is more nervous tissue by the bone then a hunk of pure meat where there is almost none -oh and don't let hamburger fool you -they grind everything up to put in hamburger)

Don't take this as the word of God (as I usually like to be taken) It's been a tny bit since I got interested and I didn't pause to check my facts. Mostly a good jumping off point if you are casually interested.

We run a decent and honest company -we don't just undercut the competition -we charge 1/3 and then we give as much as possible to the Geek (tech) -All levels of management also work as Geeks and everyone gets paid the same. Or model is to treat customers like we ourselves would like to be treated. No mailing lists, no information selling, no signups and no minimums. We use an extensive feedback system to make sure we are doing things right right. Also or service is just plain fair: First we let the customer ask their question and tell them how long it may take before asking for billing information.
