The purpose of this contest to me was to find leaks in there and fix them before going live and having it cracked one day later.

I don't know about the issue of AD networked stations not being able to access NT4 style shares but I see no reason why they shouldn't

What I DO KNOW is that the active directory can be run in 2 modes: native and mixed. In native mode it will of course deny anything that is not active directory compatible. In mixed mode it's supposed to let you work with older NT stations and servers/domain controllers. (Of course there are some features that require native mode to help force you a bit more towards it and once you're in native mode you can't go back to mixed either ;)

About authentication, you'll have to check whether your Kerberos implementation is compatible to the one Microsoft is using and you'll also have to see whether your systems support the SVC records inside DNS. (Here are some RFCs that they refer to: RR records RFC2052, Dynamic DNS update RFC2136/RFC2137)

As for accessing data that is in the AD you'll have to figure out how to do it via LDAP I suppose.

Hope the above helps a bit. Unfortunately I'm no expert in these matters.

Well ... according to what I know Eidos couldn't finish the deal because they got into financial problems themselves. Lara X (at which number are we?) is not selling as well as the predecessors and some strange game developed by Ion Storm keeps sucking up money like a black hole.

    >I don't think Ion Storm did anything wrong in this situation, Eidos did. That's what I'm upset about, and what I think the original commenter is upset about. Ion Storm was duing what it was supposed (well, maybe not Romero's team), Eidos cheated looking glass.

Well, if what I said before then Ion Storm partly is the cause of why Eidos couldn't buy LG. Daikatana just wasted so much money that Eidos didn't have the resources to help LG.

Of course, it's sad to see Looking Glass go, especially as I'm a fan of the System Shock series, the future of which is now hanging in the dark even more than that of the Thief series. The rights for Thief belonged to LG and could be bought but the rights for Shock are held by EA. (You know the giant publisher that ruins just about every game company they hold by making them publish one dumb sequel after the other. An example of this is Origin Inc which used to produce some of the greatest games ever and now starts to slowly vanish)

Anyway, I guess there's not much we can do except for buying the games we like and thus supporting the company who developed it. (Yes, I actually bought both System Shocks ;)

(We've seen our e-mail hubs here getting clogged by MP3, MPEG and AVI files which really delayed some important mails by several hours) All that, plus the fact that the network lines usually cost lots of money, gives any company with an 'acceptable use of computer material' policy enough justification to fire you. Is it ORBS' fault that Mr. Seebs is using a buggy mail server that doesn't handle some e-mails correctly? And are they at fault that some admins obviously don't care about privacy to such an extent that they set up their systems to send them a copy of failed relaying mails?

    >And posting the IP of a portscaned system for spammers to use looks like collusion WITH the spammers. No need for spammers to do the scanning work.

That is not the objective of ORBS. They should first contact you and 30 days later publish your system as 'for spammers to be used'. BTW: This posting is exactly what prevents spammers from being able to use it, as any mail server using ORBS will not let them through.

    >My host is flagged as 'last tested ok' and 'queued for re-testing'.

Then what are you complaining about? They saw that your host is OK and everybody using ORBS will accept your messages.

    >ORBS created the 'situation' by *NOT* being reasonable.
    1) They do not have proof of spamming from a host

They don't need to have any. They are not accusing you of spamming. They are probing your system because somebody asked them to do so.

    >If they had proof, were willing to provide proof, and ASKED before launching their probe attack, an attack that is FAR worse than any one spammers probe attack, then ORBS would not be the net.terrorists that they are!

You are not telling me that some small probes from ORBS are worse than a spammer sending hundreds, maybe thousands of messages through your hosts, are you? I prefer them probing my server from time to time rather than having my bandwidth wasted by spammers.

No, but with a crow-bar you can break my doors/windows, you can't do that with a dumb e-mail probe. What you are describing is much more aggressive than what ORBS are doing.

    >Really? Gee, I'm subjected to a UNWANTED attack from ORBS and I should just say "sure, come on back", or should I block future attacks?

No, because you're not subject to an attack, I REPEAT: A PROBE IS NO ATTACK! If I do a portscan of your machine did I harm you? No! If I use the result of the portscan to break into your system, now that is an attack.

    >Now, what did ORBS do? They list my host as 'Selectively open relay', which is a lie. And they KNOW it, because the host is listed as 'checked OK'.

Granted, this may have been an error on their part, but you blocking them didn't really help. In fact you worsened the situation and caused your system to be flagged as 'unprobeable'. But the choice of blocking your systems on other servers is not done by ORBS but by the admins of those systems. (If I decide to implement ORBS on my servers tomorrow and I tell it not to let 'unprobeable' systems send mail then I have blocked you. If I decide not to care about the unprobeable ones I'll let them through, the choice is mine)

Erm ... they're not looking for SPAM. They are/were scanning systems susceptible to being used by spammers UPON REQUEST by some person. (Note they are not scanning randomly but you have to specifically point them to the servers they should scan)

Agreed, their methods may be questionable but their system is reported (by its users) to catch 90% of the spam messages on the net and MAPS do definitely NOT have the right to just go ahead and disrupt their service. (If what ORBS is claiming is correct, then MAPS are the net terrorists!)
