Kind of off topic but I just thought I'd share something with my fellow slashdotters.
Incase you didn't know, IE does not strickly follow the wc3 CSS box model. Most specific between the width and padding tags.
If you author a
that has the follow attributes:
width: 400; padding: 50;
You will get two versions of that box between a wc3 compliant browser like moz and IE.
In IE you will see a box 400pixels wide with text stopping 50 pixels before the edges. In Moz you will see a box 500pixels wide with text enclosed within 400pixels.
Although they break standard, I do happen to think microsoft has a better idea of how width and padding should interralted. I think width should really act as the overall value with everything else being taken within, but the wc3 model says the width is then added wtiht he padding figures (and a few other instances, border etc) and then combined and displayed.
So just keep the above in mind when you author your pages or wonder why some things look funny in another browser.
The filter tag is also another tag which has differnces between the wc3 standard and IE. You can see a glimpse of the code with the filter tag for an alpha transparent div in the screenshot there.
This will pave the way for bigger and better OSX clones!
Honestly, do we really need SVG icons on the desktop ? All i do is click my icons, i don't need them to enlarge to 200% when I mouse over them or shrink to nothing when I click them.
I understand the need for eye candy, which is cool, but SVG icons aren't on the top of my list.
Eye candy ? www.sh0t.com/gnome.jpg
Anyhow, it's an advancement nonetheless
I've worked for the Dept of the Navy for 6 years now,4 years as an active marine and 2 for a navy contractor and I've seen a trend in the Navy/MC away from microsoft products and their consultation.
But then again, it doesn't mean that everything will be MS because he's a former MS officer, but it is more than possible. If anything he may have a VERY humble attitude toward things because I'm sure he's been the brunt of many criticisms from his past post.
It's no secret MS has had problems with security.
But I wonder what this will mean for upcoming copyright and piracy issues involving computer software and the like. Since he comes from a company where the doctrine is pretty strict in terms of copyrighting and such, we will see a severe change in the laws?
"Clark's blunt staements on the to the need to avoid erosion of privacy rights is rumored to have rubbed the administration the wrong way, prompting his exit"
Well if the previous guy was removed because he was in favor of keeping privacy rights a concern, this may indeed be the case.
Overall, I can't say this is a good sign.
Excuse my above ramblings, I have strep throat and it's driving me crazy.
Wow of all the things. Static content ona dynamic page.
Soon peole will be asking for patents on text because they had the idea of symbols and letters representing words.
...Because on one hand, the amount of actually release went DOWN. So yes, if you put out less stuff, chances are you will sell less. It's been on/. with the RIAA numbers fuding articles of prior months after the hacking attempts.
If p2p programs are causing less sales, it's probably not from the overt "They are stealing music" reasons.
As somebody noted above, more than likely, people aren't falling into the one song album trap anymore and are becoming better shoppers for their dollar. People go and try out a few songs of an upcoming album, realize it's SHIT and then don't buy it. Caveat Emptor taking to the digital age.
I'm sure many of us download a few albums, find one that really speaks to you and rush out to buy it. I've done it many times and I'm sure many, many people have done the same thing. I'm betting for some artists, the p2p trading has generated them more buzz than if they had to have a record company pay to promote them.
My advice to the RIAA would be to maybe invest in finding better musicians and making cd production and distribution cheaper than it is now so cds can be 9.99 instead of 18.99, while still giving the artist his same meager cut:[.
Raunchy
Wow maybe that means dragon did walk the earth and we just haven't found the proof of it yet.
I wouldn't be too surprised if they found some evidence of such, seems too consistant a fixture in stories to be 100% fiction.
Sigh...
Dinosaurs would have made great pets imho.
I think that largely depends on what the application is going to be.
If you need bleeding edge numbering crunching performance or have such a need for an ultra spec 64-bit cpu cluster, this is obviously a let down.
If you are more of the gormound mindset and are looking to upgrade/replace existing servers with more price competitive options, this may be a blessing in disguise(not even so hidden).
Only problem of course is soon coke will be sending out viruses that turn all the pepsi formulas into shit so people migrate away from pepsi.
Or something like that...
Just finished reading Idoru's sequeal along with The Game of Thrones series (George martin)
So I'll be needing something to read and Gibson is always welcome.
If you mean command prompt On Windows, there honestly no reason to keep it open unless you made a ton of batch scripts in the windows dir.
The windows shell post 98 isn't comparable to the nix shells so i don't see how having it open makes things any easier. Windows was designed around the gui interface and honestly IN WINDOWS things are just easier to manipulate from the regular interface.
Not to object to your l33tness or anything but I really don't see the point.
"To get work done" What kind of work? Text editing with the dos editor?
His comp most be really shitty hardware wise or he is a total newb who downloads every program feature in all those gator popup ads we all know and love.
His computer probably has more viruses than a culture dish at the Center for Disease Research.
Dvorak will be writing an article about them shortly beyond any doubt : )

Tons of people who develop open source software or who make linux distrobutions do plenty of consulting work and have "clients" as you speak.
Not to mention what better portfolio to have than to be able to point to a widely used, under scrutiny, open source (They can SEE the quality of your code) and have it be accepted by the geek masses?
Not much really.
I use FreeBSd but it sounds like user error to me with your above problems. You probably just need to learn more.
YOu replied to the wrong article. YOurs is the one before :)
well thats the idea behind that other kind of crypto that the name eludes me.
Bascially it's the HIDING of info, not so uch protecting it.
Better to say it's not there than to say it's hidden.
THere was an article about it last week about hiding info in binaries in the same amount of KB etc
Man this has to be one of the funniest things I've ever read to slashdot.
This has already been done. It's called Bootlegs.
Kind of off topic but I just thought I'd share something with my fellow slashdotters.

Compared to the 75 db GFFX, that's a whisper

I know apple doesn't make the processors but they market the machines. I was just speaking of the systems as a whole. Which I'm sure you understood,
Well this should make some maclots happy.
This may give Apple the time it needs to roll out that mysterious market shattering "g5" processor we keep hearing rumors about.
Maybe it's strategy to ride the tide and invest in long term goals rather than trying to get marketshare now will pay off.
Maybe not
haha great idea man especially for the student id. That'd be the best way to keep track :)

It will come free with your next Windows server purchase. Please see one of our fine sales representatives for more information.

Now that made me chuckle.
That would be a cool episode for an "Office Pranks" show.
