    Only if the government workers aren't corrupt. Power corrupts, and government is power.

    Business entities, generally, are dependent on the goodwill of their customers. If a business loses the goodwill of its customers, it may stop getting money. Unless a business is protected by a corrupt government, it must work to get your money.

    Many things in mice are similar to humans, that's why testing things on mice has some scientific validity.

    Mice only live a couple of years, so testing things that are meant to extend lifespan produce results in mice before the people running the experiment die. Mice are cheap. Testing mice doesn't hurt humans.

  9. Here we've got this new composite material that's a superb thermal conductor at high temperatures. No, we can't be bothered to tell you what the thermal conductivity is.

    Read the Nature article and the best they can do is say it's 2 to 3 times better than existing materials, iron and nickel. That means its thermal conductivity is somewhere near 220 (metric units). Copper is about 400, so we're not going to be using this stuff in computer heat sinks.

    Poverty and war are very significant causes of death. As poverty goes down during Trump's administration, the resulting increased lifespan will outweigh any likely loss of life from increased air pollution.

    Although some places do require filters on fireplaces and wood-burning stoves, there's a lot of wood burning that goes on unfiltered. Wood smoke is NOT clean, although generally it's not as nasty as coal.

    Even if you burn only hard woods, lots of creosote builds up inside the chimney, and much more gunk gets into the air. I love a good wood fire, but I don't pretend it's clean.

    Some cars have had knock detectors for at least 30 years now. Use low-octane gasoline, the detector senses pre-ignition, and the timing is retarded to stop the pre-ignition. Both power and efficiency suffer when timing is retarded.

    Solar panels have to be kept clean to maintain top efficiency, and other maintenance is required. It's nowhere near the maintenance required for coal, but it's not zero.

    It's hard to write anything sillier. How do you harm the Earth - send it spiraling into the Sun? If you want not to be ridiculed, write sensibly and name specific things on Earth that are harmed, and how they're harmed. The Earth itself is pretty much invulnerable.

    Humans generate nitric oxide internally; it's essential to human life.

    The Supreme Court is supposed to render decisions based upon the legal merits of a case, not engage in senile political activism.

    Lots of working people have Individual Retirement Accounts that run through their employer. Those IRAs frequently invest in the stock market, in part or in whole. Last time I read any data, more than half of all households were invested in the stock market, either directly or through retirement accounts.

    The economy was in bad shape when Bush left office because years earlier the Democrat-controlled Congress prevented financial reform that Bush wanted. (You can thank Barney Frank for that disaster.) The worst that can be honestly said of Bush is that he was a weak President who couldn't get around the opposition's obstructionism.

    Obama's recovery merely got us back to where things were at their best under Bush, and it took 8 years to do that, because his policies retarded economic growth. That's not a good record; doing nothing would have been better.

    Trump has actually advanced the economy to new ground, it's beyond recovery.

    The 17th Amendment has been an unmitigated disaster. It removes one of the important balances built into the original Constitution. By making the Senate more like the House, the diversity of power sources has been reduced.

    There are some alternatives. If you own a vehicle that already appears to have been in several collisions, other drivers know you don't care and will do a lot to avoid you. If you drive a Rolls, others know you can afford a vicious lawyer and also will avoid you.
