    A high standard of living can only come from high levels of production. If you don't make stuff, you don't have stuff. A government which by means of high taxes discourages production, also discourages wealth creation.

    That Canada et alia have a "social welware system" is not a good reason that the United States follow their inferior example.

    Here in New Hampshire, we have to wait for the soil to warm before putting tomatoes in the ground. Planting them in April instead of June assures the loss of about a month of growth. Maybe cool soil is OK deep in the tropics, but I doubt that it helps in temperate regions.

    HP's enterprise value is $52,000,000,000. Sun does not have the abilty to buy HP. HP could buy Sun, by why would HP want to buy an overvalued, declining asset?

    Linux is not ownable, so how could Oracle buy it? Or did you mean Oracle buy Sun?

    The so-called reforms include criminal penalties for executives. They are required to claim that the company's financial reports are true, and if they're wrong they can go to jail. So, they now have to choose one of the following three: 1. Risk jail time. 2. Waste a lot of time ensuring that their underlings aren't lying to them. 3. Quit. Honest CEOs must choose 2 or 3. Dishonest ones already face #1, so they're not affected. None of the three options help the company.

    Sarbanes-Oxley is similar to the broken window falacy.

    I recently switched from Adelphia digital cable to DirecTV/Tivo. I have had less trouble with blockiness in DirecTV, and the channels that were analog in Adelphia are noticeably cleaner with DirecTV. On the other hand, the Adelphia cable box (Scientific Atlanta) and the boxes on ther systems (Jerrold) sometimes have nicer operating systems: easier use of favorite channel lists, quicker methods to see what comes next on this channel, for example.

    DirecTV is very near breakeven and can't afford to drop prices. In fact, they recently increased them slightly.

    Note that that launch vehicle was a Zenit, a Russian rocket. Nice that they're doing good commercial work. Shameful that NASA has dropped the ball.

    The primary cause of death through malnutrition is the deliberate action of dictatorial governments. The solution is to overthrow those governments and establish better ones. I doubt that such a solution would be widely tolerated.

    Intel chips with Hyperthreading process the threads simulataneously.

    My understanding of Intel's hyperthreading is that it is essentially an intelligent fast context switcher running in hardware. It still has to swap out registers and empty or suspend instruction queues. This means that threads are not actually executed simultaneously. AMD's single core threading has to do all that in software or just wait around until stalls are resolved.

    Over the years, the number of layers possible has grown. If crystaline silicon can be grown on top of a few layers of interconnect (new technology, AFAIK) then true 3D construction would be possible. Flaw density would be likely to rise (reducing yield), but shorter interconnects would help with power dissipation.

    Sounds like a good reason that satellite TV dishes aren't shiny metal mirrors. Twice a year the LNA goes up in smoke (only in the tropics).

    If it's in the equatorial plane, it can take out two by intersecting the geosynchronous orbit twice. Whether it can take out more depends upon the spacing of the satellites and the size of the asteroid. It's not going to have enough of a gravitational effect to severely alter the orbit of any satellite it doesn't strike.
