### Nintendo does have mature games. Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, and Resident Evil are examples.
Sadly that is already half of the mature games available for the Cube
Even if it was half- (I dunno, haven't checked the facts) what a f-ing STELLAR list of games that is. All replayable, unique experiences.
Somehow, without the same kind of hype as Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo always manages to make these games that make you feel like you're playing something just a bit different. The 360 my friend owns- I love it, been over to his house every day, can't wait to buy one, BUT, it feels like my computer. Ditto the Xbox.
Some of those Gamecube/N64 games just make me feel like I'm taking a break from reality.
What if the folks at Take Two are huge fans of Sid Meier and merely want to pump enough cash into his company to help him make the game he really wants to make?
Games are getting expensive to make these days, and a competitive, next-gen experience is even more expensive. Besides, some folks like to concentrate on creating things and leave business to the business folks.
So while were all speculating on shit we know nothing about, I'll do a little speculation of my own: what if Take 2 will pay for the development of a fully 3D, full featured Alpha Centari 2 with 30 times more content and the greatest, most intuitive interface ever seen in a strategy game?
In high school there were always those geeky kids who could DM Temple of Elemental Evil, build you a 386, draw figures straight out of Monster Manual, AND ace their exams.
Then there were the kids that hung out with them, not because they were talented geeks, but simply because they were geeky.
That said: I love Gamespot. Even though they have some questionable reviews from time to time, their commentary is entertaining, mature and comfortable in its geeky skin. Gerstmann, Kasavin, etc. are really the standard for everyone else.
The Escapist is fun, but occasionally takes itself too seriously and G4TV has more cringe-worthy moments than an 8th grade talent show.
Why would anyone buy it when they know it's gonna be 50 bucks in 2012!? yadda yadda yadda...
See, kids, there's these people called early adopters and pretty much anything consumer electronics oriented- they buy it ASAP. Why? Because they can, because it's fun, and because not everyone can get one.
Early adopters have been enjoying HDTV, pixel shaders, portable MP3 players, progressive scan DVDs, hell- MICROPROCESSORS and AUTOMOBILES for alot longer than the rest of us.
With consumer electronics enjoying an all time high in popularity, I'd say there's more of these folks than ever.
Early adopters notwithstanding, the scenario in 2006: Abundant 360s with price drop plus Halo 3 (free mulitplayer w/Silver Subscription) vs. scarce, scary-expensive PS3s with an overdone remake of Final Fantasy 7.
This will not be the first time the champ has gotten too big, too lazy and too confused to win.
you just can't make one with teams logos, nfl logos or player names.
The problem with posts like yours is that you flame me for complaining about an obviously anti-competitive move, whilst making statements showing that you don't even undertand the issue in the first place.
You seem a little slow and quick to argue (for no reason, as well) so I'll state my complaint in terms that a seven year old can understand.
1) Sega and EA had a competition for the NFL video game market.
2) That competition led to Sega having a better, more fun product (it could've led to EA having a better, more fun product, either way- I WIN).Now that's gone.
3) That competition led to Sega having a 19.99 video game. Far from crying- "let me have it for 19 bucks or I won't play it", this was SEGAs' idea. Either way, more money for me- I WIN. Now that's gone.
So now, no more updates of the video game that I liked to play, and no more cheap video games. No matter what your corporate philosphy is, that scenario sucks. THAT IS ALL I AM UPSET ABOUT, dickhead.
Now, EA can charge 60 bucks or 70 bucks or 50 bucks plus 10 bucks a month or whatever they want, and if I want to play an NFL game I have to pay it. Hardly a human rights violation, but it's still a pain in the ass. In the old way, the consumer had all the power. Now EA has all the power. Whether right or wrong, who would you rather have have the power, the consumer or the business? Don't answer that, I know what you're going to say.
It really doesn't take much to bring out the knee-jerk reactions here on/. does it?
I get what your saying, groupthink is annoying.
But this case is a little different. Actually a whole lot different. Now there is no competition. Competition, if you remember (or are you just trolling?) is what gave us freakin 20 DOLLAR VIDEO GAMES in the first place, for God's sake. That's a real, tangible difference in the weight of my wallet.
Now that's gone. So, yeah, I think the gamers who hang here have every right to complain about this one. You know the case could be made that it is, in fact, your post that's the knee-jerk comment.
I'm surrounded by people with average attitudes who never seem to leave their houses (especially with WoW out). Yet the will of the herd still manages to set our course.
The real question is: can blogs can change/define the conventional wisdom? I say eventually, yes.
Will it translate into a diversity of opinion? Will it translate into a more reality and fact-based opinions? Those questions are more concerned with human nature, not technology or information.
Humans have had the correct info for years (cigarettes, war, imperialism- all bad) and still have chose to do nothing about it.
I can't help but think that keyboard support is a no-brainer.
RPGs, for one, would definitley benifit from increased functionality. When you consider that KOTOR was a *huge* success for the Xbox on so many different levels, and that Fable is already a record breaking title the move to a more sophisticated input system would seem natural. As far as the inherently watered down, oversimplified nature of a console- it's not like a 101 keyboard is something the masses have never seen before.
Besides, wouldn't this be in line with the "convergence" conspiracy Mr. Gates' has had all along?;) I would just *love* to be able to choose between mouse and keyboard and controller on my Xbox.
It would be a small miracle if I could plug in a PS2 or USB keyboard up to the damn thing.
More than 2 minutes of inputting song titles and profile info drives me absolutley bonkers with a controller, but somehow it is not worth the investment in an Xbox-only keyboard. I can't explain this.
Now if we can just get them to promise a hard drive...
If Chronicles of Riddick is good, all that means is the developer actually cared about the product and had the imagination and talent to pull it off. It's that simple.
The underlying problem is still and will always be there- games based on movies tend to be promotional tie-ins first, games second.
I am so glad that they stuck with it. Out of all the Ultima remakes this is the one I have been most exctied about. Few realize how daunting remaking a game as epic as an Ultima can be, and even fewer have the intestines to pull it off (IIRC no one really has, I might be wrong, though Exult doesn't count...)
It isn't and won't die for one simple reason- it's Bill Gates' easiest path into the living room. The average american is waaaay more likely to put an internet connected Xbox on the big screen than an internet connected PC.
Look for the Xbox 2 to up the ante in functionality, considerably. My mouth waters at the power and sheer fun of a modded Xbox 2, even if it's just a higher horsepower version of the first.
It only took one Beatles to turn what was termed an "adolescent fad"- rock n' roll -into the most comprehensive music of the twentieth century, far outpacing jazz, classical and all other art-forms in its field with its depth and reach.
We're nearing photorealism in games- what's next?
What's currently known as interactive entertainment will become the most important art form of this century. It will continue to attract those who seek to push the limits of what's possible- usually the greatest artists.
Warren Spector has said many times in interviews that having cutting edge graphics was a priority.
That being said, from what else I have read I don't think that the graphics will be as jaw dropping as the in game physics and lighting. The designers have said that knocking over lamps, barrels, people, etc. will have almost lifelike actions and reactions with the rest of the game world.
I predict player made movies and in game footage not unlike the Halo warthog-launching movies circulating aroung the net. People will find absolutley hilarious things to do with this physics engine, I'm sure.
I really hope this game does well. It might be a bit too smart for joe sixpack, however. The fact that you don't need to use guns at all might be telling....
With a higher framerate, a game just feels and plays better, it's as simple as that. 30 fps is just *not enough* to have good action and feel on most pc first person shooters.
nonsense, they haven't been bad for me or my friends growing up. i'm still the pasty white single guy i was when i started playing video games. no adverse effects here.
I think it's definitley possible to please both the casual and hardcore fan. Just be true to Tolkiens' history and geography and keep the gameplay simple, well paced and fun.
Anyone played LOTR Risk? That game accomplishes pretty much what the devolopers of this game wish to achieve. While that game had its faults (no Mordor territories), every LOTR or Risk fanboy I've played it with has enjoyed it completley.
With Warcraft III doing so well and the copycat nature of the industry there's gonna be a billion RTS games anyway. Might as well have them in interesting, fun universes.
I AM an artist on a major label. I see the industry every day, I don't just read about it or theorize about it in my dorm room. Nobody's being ripped off? Come again? Sales down over 10%, kids my age who've worked there asses off for 10+ years to get their 30K-50K jobs getting laid off?
I've been through the whole signing, creating, recouping process many times over, so there's no need to educate myself using much the much ridiculed Courtney Hole Manifesto, which, when it wasn't being 'worst case scenario' was completley wrong. She's been trying to demonize the record industry in an effort to line her own pockets by getting a more lucrative record deal. The irony is- she's just as greedy as you envision the 'Cartel' to be.
The perception that labels take an artists creative output and the rights to it and leave them with nothing is mostly borne of a few bitter artists who misspent their advances thinking they were going to be rock stars or bitter indie rock geeks who malign the industry every chance they get (yet still sell their CDs in the $8-13 price range). I was smart about my money.
I shouldn't be ridiculous? Sorry, but most people don't think about Nelson Mandela when they download- they think 'one less CD to buy'. I think it IS ridiculous to attach a concept of social protest and consumer's rights to a product that isn't actually a nessecity.
...who go on long rants (and manage to somehow include microsoft ?) to justify MUSIC PIRACY.
what i don't understand is why so many people are using their considerable talents and intellect to create arguments FOR, and technology TO rip off some of the most harmless people in this country- musicians. Way to go, guys, hurt a group of people who do no harm to the environment or society, and have done nothing but enhance your lives.
I can't believe the demonization of the musicians in general, so everyone can not only feel not guilty about music piracy, but you can convince yourself that you're doing a valuable public service as well.
when you're done with the record industry what are you going to do steal from the 'real' man? oh that's right- nothing...that would take effort and commitment, and let's face it, making a REAL change in this world just isn't as fun as watching your downloads complete.
nVidia is NOT 3dfx. while the GeForce FX Ultra won't be the conventional wisdom choice of 'performance experts' everywhere, at least it won't be the monstrous, straight to e-bay, one of kind curio that the V5 6000 was.

i remember V5 5500 benchmarks that were SLOWER than the Geforce 2. this is NOT the same situation at all.
i predict nVidia will be back sooner rather than later.

Can't do that without cash, folks.
Really? My goodness.
Would you care to get me a hard number so we can begin the countdown? (KOTOR notwithstanding.)
No, I have panic disorder.
Yeah, when I read this I compulsivley ducked in fear of flying office furniture.
Then there were the kids that hung out with them, not because they were talented geeks, but simply because they were geeky.

Many a promising remake has been called off and others languish.
I guess the bottom line is...remake or not, these days making a good computer game is tough business indeed.
It isn't and won't die for one simple reason- it's Bill Gates' easiest path into the living room. The average american is waaaay more likely to put an internet connected Xbox on the big screen than an internet connected PC.

I wonder if there will be that sense of accomplishment I got from Tie Fighter when I destroyed an allied bomber squadron, sigh.
The visceral thrills you're looking for are likeley to be found here
Is Star Wars is doomed to be the christian rock of video games, i.e. pale imitations of already successful genres?

it's been proven that when the music industry rips people off intelligent, comitted people can make them pay for it. That's how you do it, that's how you make a real change.
