You're worried that someone will put a string into a date query? Ever heard of parametrized queries?
Queries are a run time operation. Compile time safety buys you nothing except bad coding practices and a false sense of security.
250k? That's all? It will probably cost the university 3 times that in support and upgrade costs. They probably should have run this by their math department....

Yeah Might and Magic was good. There is dungeoncraft and forgottenworld which are decent remakes of the older RPG type games.
