  1. this hardly seems like news on Congressional Anti-Piracy Caucus Formed · · Score: 1

i think i'm a bit desensitized to news like this cause i hear noise about 'bringing down the pirates' on a daily basis, but have yet to see anything tangible really come about.

this is the 23489th time we've heard this, isn't it? anyone worried?

i never would've thought that naming a drink "raging cow" (after a much-feared degenerative brain disorder) is the way to market a product. then again, i never would've though of bribing bloggers with t-shirts and hats :P

sounds like a whole bunch of idiocy to me.

  5. Re:Various complaints about the blurb on The Taste of Pain · · Score: 1

the question isn't "is it nature or is it nurture?" as some other posters seem to be asking... clearly, it is the interaction between the genes and the environment that is important. for example, in the parent post's example:

it was already known...that some genes existed that impart a predilection for alchoholism.

if a person has the genetic configuration to have a predilection for alcholism, yet alcohol is not present, the gene does nothing. for example, suppose this person is a strict muslim and never has a drink in his life -- the gene never comes into play. suppose, on the other hand, that this person lives in France, and is exposed to alcohol frequently through childhood. now, perhaps, the gene will profoundly impact this person's life.

a person's genes are not fate-determining any more than a person's environment is. it's all about the interaction between the two.

  7. Re:It's way too expensive on How Much Does it Cost to Produce a Recording? · · Score: 1

forgot to add that if we're talking about electronic music, the production cost is nothing other than time, mastering, and promotion. hell, i make music on my computer and it costs me nothing but a couple hours that i could spend uselessly sleeping :)

  8. Re:It's way too expensive on How Much Does it Cost to Produce a Recording? · · Score: 1

yeah, it's funny that it is assumed that paying huge amounts of money to record an album is a must. you could take that huge amount of money, keep half of it, and use the other half to buy a computer, a high quality sound card, a mixer, monitors, mics, all the necessary hardware effects, multitrack software such as Logic Audio or Cubase, instruments etc etc etc etc... spend a while learning audio production... then record as many albums as you want at no cost besides time. i suppose that's the key factor -- time. but if saving a little time is gonna cost $200,000 i'd rather have my own studio and spend the time :)

  9. Suggesting music based on listening habits on Discovering New Music? · · Score: 2, Informative

    http://www.besonic.com/ does this

besonic is a site mostly populated by obscure artists, a heap of them electronic music makers, too. if you sign up for a listening account with them, they'll email you once a week (or something?) with tracks and artists they think you'll like based on how many tracks in different genres you've listened to. it's not a very intelligent system, but it kind of fits what is being asked about.

of course, sites like besonic (and the original big one, mp3.com) are dying off. the most promising new one is electronicscene.com. any electronic musician can sign up to have their tracks on electronicscene. there are ample links between genre pages and artist pages so that if you find one artist or genre you like, you can easily find another similar one... or lists of the artists and genres that influenced them. provided you like electronic music, it's an excellent place for finding new stuff.

  12. what about canada? on New Jersey Enacts 'Smart Gun' Law · · Score: 1

if owning a gun is so essential to safety, why is canada's homicide rate so much lower than the US's? certainly, the criminals still have guns.

i ask you the following questions: are you really safer having a gun fight than handing over your wallet? does it put your mind at rest to know that anyone on the street may have a gun, including the normally good-tempered person whose car you just accidentally collided with? do gun-wielding criminals more frequently deliberately murder unarmed people or armed people who try to shoot the gun-wielding criminal? are most gun slayings really about an evil person with an innocent gun, or about someone who lost their temper (caught their wife having an affair perhaps)?

there are actually numbers on the last one. i can't be bothered to find them now... but suffice to say a lot more fatal shootings are "crimes of passion" as opposed to pre-planned shootings. there are also a HUGE number of cases of aggravated assault with a firearm in the US each year.

  14. os x's default email app... on Email (As We Know It) Doomed? · · Score: 5, Interesting

os x's default email app, mail, seems to toss spam directly into the trash with (about) 99% accuracy... that is, 99% of spam is correctly identified as spam. perhaps twice i've found emails that i've wanted to receive in the trash, but that's over many months, and the mistakes will never be repeated after a quick "whitelisting".

anyway, if you're really upset by spam, it's pretty friggin' easy to avoid it... do NOT put down your regular email address for any site that wants to email you a password for registration. get a trashy hotmail account (or whatever) just for verifications, and use your regular email addresss for real communication.

perhaps spam, collectively, is a huge problem, but the problems it causes for typical individuals are small, especially given the existence of spam filters. that's why spam won't "kill" email by any measure.
