You shouldn't have to use your own personal phone for work purposes anyway. (Note, I did because I didn't want to carry two phones). But they should provide you with a phone if you need it for work, if not, then leave your phone at home and they'll buy you one the next time there's a problem with the servers and you weren't notified immediatly by your phone.
It's not all about graphics. Tetris had some of the most simple graphics every conceived of, "squares". Yet, I played the living crap out of that damn thing until I couldn't close my eyes without seeing blocky rotating shapes falling down.
The thing about tetris: It was a good game that was intellectually stimulating and it is still played in todays world, which is predominatly filled with fancy graphics and smoothed edges.
Every once in a while, Carmack will fix the problem. But that only sets up another 5+ years of similar games to follow.
Java has always been managed through a community process. I think it has been fairly effective and having the support of a large company can't hurt. ESR's only job these days is bitching at companies who don't open source their software. That's all great, unless your a software only company!
Most of us are engineers with degrees (or at least I'm guessing). How many of you would (if you could go back in time) persue a different career now? I know I would.
I'm tired of lay offs and perpetual job hunting. Maybe it's my location, but still.
She suggests that there aren't enough educated people willing to work for minimum wage. I'm glad I don't work for this biatch! People go to college to avoid minimum wage jobs, they learn how to produce quality software, how to write effective documentation, how to manage people etc and they pay dearly for it. Those people should be willing to work for minimum wage? Thanks, but no thanks. What she is saying is that college is a waste of time and that means that the future quality of software coming out of HP is going to be painfully shitty.
Well, anyone who believes "the facts" about the advantages of one product over another as given by the manufacturer of the product that is better is just plain stupid.
Thats why I don't believe MS when they say Windows is better and cheaper, and why I don't believe most/. posts about why linux is better. I'll make my decision based on my experience and my needs, not what other people tell me. I think this goes for most of us here.
The bad news... All of our bosses soak this shiat up!
This is the future. I've always carried around a book, paperback usually, in the winter I can fit it in my inside coat pocket. When I'm on a bus, or a plane, or i'm just bored, I whip it out and start reading.
Now, instead, we're going to whip out our portable media devices and watch "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" instead. Ahh, the future! Behold!
Really, I see this and the ipod in different markets. The ipod plays music, well. This may play video and music (who knows how well). But the fact is the ipod is portable and people can safely listen to music as they do other things. This looks pretty large (less portable), looks more fragile with the screen, and plays video and music.
People will still buy ipods for music and maybe this thing for video (if they dont have a laptop or portable DVD player already)
A good solution to this for those of you who just need to watch movies while driving is to set up a series of mirrors that flip the image so that you can see it in your rearview mirror with the player in the back seat. That way you can drive down the highway staring into your rearview mirror! Or you can just get someone to ride in the backseat and provide a running commentary about what's going on in the movie. "Oh man! Murtaugh and Riggs just blew up a semi man!"
I know those flip up DVD players that fit where your CD player normally would be are set to run only when the car is in park. You can install it yourself apparently and "forget" to hook that safety measure up of course. That begs the question though, why would you sit in your car and watch a DVD if you aren't going to go anywhere?
I'm sure there are hiring managers out there willing to turn down good and qualified SCO exers. We need remember in these days and times, people are working where they are not always because they want to work there, but because they have no other choice. You can bet there are SCO employees sitting in the same building as McBride saying, "Dude, this company is farked up."
The only format that will work is one that will allow manufacturers to build the players cheaply with backwards compatibility. Everyone already has lots of DVDs. These people are going to be mad when they have to buy new players to play new DVDs. They are going to be even madder if they find out that their new DVD players won't play their older DVDs. So the new players will have to support both the new format and the current format. Things like Blu-Ray that aren't backwards compatible are going to cause manufactures a lot of trouble in building backwards compatable players and that trouble will be passed along to the consumer. That won't fly.
Whatever they do, it better work with my current DVDs or I'll just start downloding everything.
Windows Update is great for keeping up to date, but a fresh install requires that you connect to the internet before it is "safe" to connect to the internet. This is a problem.
It would be nice if you could go to the windows update page and download a zip file of all the updates necessary for a fresh install (maybe it requires a CD key or something so it knows what to give you).
Use another computer that is safe to DL this zip and burn it onto a CD, then you can be guarenteed to have your windows box up to date before going on line.
This would also be useful for me when I update my brother's laptop which only has a modem connection. It's hell to figure out what it needs and hunt down the seperate files on microsoft.com.

Sean: "Yea, he's a liberal and I talk about that in my new book 'blah blah liberals suck'. It's a great book, buy a certificate for a signed copy on my online store."
Guest: "okay. so howard dean..."
Sean: "you should really read my new book, 'blah blah liberals suck'"
Just kidding. It was a good first book (IMHO) but not at the same level as Neuromancer and Snow Crash (again IMHO).
I bought it (even though it's available for free on the internet) to support the author and his support of electronic freedom. It was good, but I wasn't personally bloan away. I'll buy the next book though, "Eastern Standard Tribe". Sounds interesting.
I can see why some people like this movie, but I hated it. I'm no kung-fu movie fan, so that's probably the problem, but all I saw was a bunch of blood shooting unrealistically all over the place. I see that he was paying homage to some older films and the ways in which they were made, but it wasn't all that entertaining for me. I'm glad you liked it though.

wow. This kind of research will surely result in his tenure. What's next for this guy? Simply amazing.

Slashdot needs an ESR graphic.
Now that you mention it, I have. Use a USB cable and it becomes 100X harder.

That's insane, who do these people think they are, Astrophysicists? Geez!

I always find these studies funny. The actual reason is that most of them are dead from caffene poisioning before they get diabetes.

At what point does it become more cost effective to launch smaller space telescopes? Just curious.

Holy shit! This is gonna ruin the whole rest if the year for me!
I'm just glad this year passed without further proliferation of those damned singing plastic fishes.

Roblimo is the Sean Hannity of the Linux community.

Well, to me, it looked something like what might happen if you filled a firetruck with cherry coolaid and turned on the hose.
