is one application that could take advantage of 3G.. who wouldn't want to turn their phone into a mp3 player with unlimited tunes? Oh um, and I don't know, about a zillion other things?

Yah, the notion that customization is the primary motivation for 3G is pretty dumbfuckstupid...

And don't forget the prestige from being the first on the block with a robot smarter than Sony's canine-wannabe AIBO.

AIBO uses some pretty sophisticated AI algorithms to learn stuff, right? I don't see any mention of AI here, so I don't see how it can be called smarter just by the mere fact of mentioning it has a Windows PC...

  3. Re:Important changes? on Linux Kernel 2.4.20 Released · · Score: 5, Informative

There was at least one very important change for me personally - support for KT-400 motherboards (by adding support for VIA8235 southbridge). I had gotten 2.4.20-rc3 for this support when I got my new motherboard, but now it's official.
Incedentally, 2.4.19 will sorta work on a KT-400 board, but disk access is really slow because it can't turn on DMA.

  4. Going after individual file-sharers? on EMI Promises Downloadable Music · · Score: 2

So worried are the record labels that some, including EMI and Warner, have even talked about suing individual file-sharers for illegally downloading songs. This would be a last resort, for it would alienate potential customers of legitimate services.

Hmmm... not sure I understand this point. How would it alienate potential customers?
I suspect the real reason why the record labels haven't gone after individuals is because it would be prohibitively expensive.
I wonder why, though, they just don't go after a few random individuals to set a precedent... or have they?

    It's not a "filesharing" client/server... it's a "streaming" client/server. There's a big difference here.
With Gnutella, you're sharing files. With this software, you're sharing streams.
The cool thing about this is that a radio station (or any user for that matter) with limited bandwidth can now stream their program to an unlimited number of listeners.
I hope my ,y favorite club starts using this, so I don't have to worry about their limit to the number of simultaneous listeners they support!

"I was introduced to both uClibc and BusyBox, both of which I ended up using."

I spent several months with a small group of people putting together an embedded system, which used both uClibc and Busybox. While these are undoubtedly excellent pieces of open source software which are great for embedded systems, I find their use questionable for everyday desktop computing.
For example, many features you take for granted, say, with bash (such as compound commands, the full featured command execution environment) are not available with the smaller, simpler shells in Busybox.
The small size does come at a price... after all, the reason they are smaller is because along with the bloat, some of the less frequently used functionality has been removed.

Glancing over the questions one has always stuck in my mind. The question was to tick what was the primary reason for buying a particular film over another and among the list was 'the studio'. I couldn't, and still can't, understand how someone would think "Oh, that film was made by Warner Bros, it must be good, I'll get it." What made it memorable was that some marketing monkey boy must have believed that to be case.

While I thought that this article was fairly nteresting, this conclusion bothers me. Did the author ever think about the possibility that the question was put on the survey with the intention of validating the accuracy of the survey? You need to put some bullshit questions on a survey to test if people are blindly checking off boxes, or are really answering truthfully and thoughtfully...
