At that time, BSD was free. However, it was in question as to how free it would stay for how long. This is arguably what gave linux the advantagy to gain the developer base and grow so quickly. BSD was in court with AT&T over copyright junk and was shadowed by a cloud of doubt over it's survival. Luckily it was agreed that all AT&T ancestor code would be rewritten under a different license, and BSD lived on. You might be right about Minix, though...i'm not too up on it's history.
Does there always have to be a point? Can't people do something because they want to?! I'm seriously getting sick of people on slashdot turning their nose up to non-linux, non-gnome, non-kde, non-whatever projects for whatever reason they pull out of their ever-widening ass. Be it decentralization of the open source mind share, percieved uselessness, whatever. People do things like this because they want to. What's wrong with that? That's how innovation happens. I mean, why would Linus go off an code linux? There was already Minix, and several other unix-like distributions (namely BSD). Did the world REALLY need another unix knock-off? Apparently so.
Ahh ya jumped the gun there, nancy. I wasn't bashing your spelling, I was simply saying that despite your poor typing skills, you have a valid point. It was also a Family Guy pun. A bit testy, aren't we?
Well, ati released their hardware specs, and the ati driver that ships with both XFree and xorg does a fine job for 2D graphics. Quite frankly, the binary ati drivers are a pain in the ass to get working smoothly. So you can count me as someone who doesn't use the ati drivers.
The point being that it is entirely possible to have a usable linux workstation without using closed-source binary only drivers. Biatch.
As opposed to "hacker" english made up by esr one drunked summer night whilst trying to differentiate you hackers from us...well...we're called "normies."
Ah, the internet. Where people pretend to be experts.
First off, we know you like *nix, but there is not "root" user in windows. Sorry to be surley, but how would you feel if some MCSE told you that you need to be "Administrator" to install a program globally in linux? Just because we don't liked Windows doesn't mean be have to be fucktards.
Thirdly, there is a problem, as i understand it, in the win32 message passing system. This design flaw allows a message to be sent to any running process without it's source being checked. This basically negates any kind of user-level security at the message-passing level. So, yes, any program could theoretically run without any kind of access control on windows. The grandparent's comment that windows is just like Unix if you set up user's and permissions correctly is wrong.
source: here Note also that i just woke up, and i could have made a few errors. In anycase, the site i linked to explains it much better than i.
This is, of course, the funniest post on slashdot, EVER. Why, oh why, do AC's never get modded up? Some of them are damn insightful, damn funny, and damn interesting.
Try plowing over a portion of your local (unihabited) desert and see if people agree that no "harm" is occuring
The desert was a bad example. It's extremely fragile and you WOULD be disturbing many many living things you can't see, which would then echo to larger living things that you can see. for more info
I think it would be interesting to see if any kind of weak ecosystem exists on mars below the surface...like say...a colony of people living 6 inches beneath the surface, all named Mortonson.
Hey, you gotta have something to entertain yourself after getting your wisdom teeth pulled. This is, by far, the greatest shit-slinging thread i've ever participated in on slashdot, thanks for the cooporation!
I never said you had a small penis. I actually explicitly stated that I was not implying that. Again, more evidence of your stupidity. C'mon man, just keep pilin' it up for me!
And we all know that people who are incredibly intelligent and who have unusually large genitalia hang out on/. on saturday evenings/afternoons.
Mmm...throwing bricks from inside a glass house. Always entertaining. I also never claimed anything about my own physiology or mental capacity. Thanks for the compliments, though!
I never implied that "sportbikers" are uniformly stupid. The great author Hunter S Thompson is a sport bike enthusiast, and quite intelligent, though admittedly burnt out on tons and tons of halucinogenic drugs. However, the trend seems to be towards stupidity. I'll explain. Sport bikes are a status symbol these days. They evoke an image of rebellion, breaking the status-quo, masculinity, etc. At the same time, quite a few "sportbikers" tend to be the opposite of that. They tend to not be rebellious, tend to follow the status-quo. As far as masculinity goes, why would a male, someone who truely is masculine simply by virtue of having a penis, need to evoke such a thing? There are all kinds of psychological theories on this, many site the reason lies in a feeling of inadequacy as a male. Thus, the individual feels as though he needs something to feel more like a man. And, really, what's more phallic than 2000cc's of finely engineered internal combustion insanity between one's legs? Clearly the lack of something in that general region, or at least the lack of any kind of bulk, is being compensated by machinery.
That being said, there are plenty of pragmatic reasons to own a streetbike - traffic avoidance, excellent gas mileage, and, of course, some chicks dig 'em. Unfortunately, when the girl gets off the bike and in the bed, she's in for a big (or should i say, little) suprise.
Just to be clear, I'm not saying you fit this model at all, though having the link to that forum show up...AS YOUR HOMEPAGE ON SLASHDOT seems to scream, "Oh, look at how cool i am!! Yes!! I'm cool, like me!" which, once again, seems to be a symptom of your stupidity.
to sum up: I'm not saying you have a small penis, i'm not saying you tote the line of the normative, and i'm not saying that you fit the model of the stereotypical biker at all. All that i am saying is that you're giving more and more evidence to support the case for your stupity.
For some odd reason the CS department at my university used to teach intro to C++ on MS Visual C++. I was the only person in my class who compiled there projects in linux, also the only one who used linux in the labs (they have computers running VMWare, you can either boot linux or windows). I was also one of the few Non-CS majors in the class. That kind of speaks about using degrees and certification as a baseline, but i've always been an outlier. In defense of the CS department, though, they now teach that class in linux.
OH, another symptom of your stupidity would be having a link to a crotch-rocket message board as your homepage. Someone's compensating for something...or lack of something
My university was going to force all business majors to have graduation indoors. In Southern California (the inland empire, to be specific), any kind of large indoor gathering in late spring/early summer is never EVER a good idea. The business majors felt jipped, so they started an online petition to have graduation outside. They got enough signatures to make the administration move their graduation from inside to outside. So, yes, they can work. Will they work for this kind of thing? Fuck if i know.
I believe that's what "Software Engineering" degrees are all about. Of course, that's school dependent, too. Some school's still teach all the theorhetical stuff, some just teach C++ and MS Visual Studio for 4 years. Some would say i'm talking out my as, or am a terrific athelete. But, hey, I'm an environmental science major who taught himself everything he knows about computers. So, yea. The former is true! The latter is homestarrunner.
I'm running it right now with a 9700 pro. No problems. Runs beautifully.

I agree. I think AC's have some of the best retorts, replies, and reconnaissance of all slashdot participants. Excluding myself, of course.
The lack of skill with which you type belies the cogency of your wisdom.
And plenty of people have criticized nvidia's & ati's closed source practices.
Well, ati released their hardware specs, and the ati driver that ships with both XFree and xorg does a fine job for 2D graphics. Quite frankly, the binary ati drivers are a pain in the ass to get working smoothly. So you can count me as someone who doesn't use the ati drivers.

biatch added for emphasis.

Does this mean they use closed source video drivers at all?

Because everything sounds better on linux! DUh!

Alas, we are not but techno-elites.
"its."
Period inside the double quotes. Better yet, no period at all. A single word doesn't make a complete sentence.

No, you're stupid because you're stupid. Not letting the guy take a short nap is just a symptom of the problem.
