Directions Mag is/will probably provide a deeper analysis since it target specifically the geospatial domain, not general technology.

  2. Re:TomeNet engine is open on Build Your Own MMOG · · Score: 1

Both games are designed in such a way that players are expected to sit back and think about certain moves. And when the player stops, the game stops.

That's not how it works anymore. You can also set automatic actions if there is lag, like auto-defense and auto-attacking. I can't tell you a lot more about it simply because you reached the limits of my knowledge. But read the TomeNet forums and ask questions there if you haven't found any answers. There's also an insightful Tome wiki linked from the site.

The single-player engine of Tome is way more advanced than TomeNet right now afaik.

  3. GeoRSS anyone? on MS Reveals Info On New RSS Extensions · · Score: 2, Interesting

I only quickly browsed MS's site, but I don't think they implemented something similar to georss.org.

From slashgisrs: A team is working on Geographically Encoded Objects for RSS feeds. From the overview: "GeoRSS is simple proposal for RSS feeds to also be described by location or Geotagged. We standardize the way in which "where" is encoded with enough simplicity and descriptive power to satisfy most needs to describe the location of Web content. [...] it should serve as an easy-to-use geotagging language that is brief and simple with useful defaults but extensible and upwardly-compatible with more sophisticated formats like the OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) GML (Geography Markup Language)".

GeoRSS is really an interesting innovation from the actual concept of RSS.

  5. TomeNet engine is open on Build Your Own MMOG · · Score: 5, Informative

If you take a look a TomeNet, you get a MMORPG open engine. The sad thing is, you must go to the forums to learn anything about it because the website isn't updated often.

TomeNet is a roguelike multiplayer online rolepaying game based on Tolkien's work. The single player game is also getting closer to version 3.0, with a revamped game engine (open, with source code available). Great game and great community.

we would have an avalanche of innovative "taking someone else's idea and product and sticking it on the internet" innovation!

He he he... not exactly what I had in mind ;-)
But the thing is: IP really is a limitation because you are prohibited to try new mixes: in this example, mixing Internet, a game and a webmapping service/data. If there wasn't any Hasbro IP, in the end, the potential for innovation would be greater. In other words, I disagree with you :-)

  7. FreeRisk? Google Maps? Why not the Blue Marble? on RISK on Google Maps Shut Down · · Score: 3, Interesting

Couldn't there be a way to make a FreeRisk.org in the same way there is a FreeCiv.org? And thus, bypass legal limitations?

Civ IV can even use NASA Blue Marble tiles, I don't see why a FreeRisk or not-so-free Risk couldn't make use of NASA's Blue Marble data. It would be more beautiful than a Google Map basemap. Am I wrong?

Clearly, this is another example where IP impeds innovation...
