I take it that you are an American? I can tell by the set upon flavour of your comment. To you I say, 'What hasn't the American government done to anybody, to deserve anything in return.'

My personal favourite is re-electing George Bush. And its not good enough to say you didn't vote for him because nobody went out rioting after he was re-elected. Same difference in my book.

I think they call them side'WALK's for a reason. So that you can walk on them. Thats's why most major metropolitan centers have banned rollerblading from them as well. So I think its appropriatet that wheeled devices like rollerblades, bicycles and segway whatsits should be relegated to the street where they logically belong. At least with rollerblades though, you stand a chance of getting out of a cars way in time. ;-) I hope nobody spent too much of there money on thier dork-mobiles in the cities that have banned them.

I'm sorry guys, but any of you who happen to be thinking that this vast waste of technology and marketing is any good, then I truly feel sorry for you. This thing is the stupidest, most moronic bit of fluff that I've seen come along in all my years on this earth. I really feel sorry for all you wannabe 'early adopters' who are jumping on the bandwagon early, because you are wasting your money. Ever heard of a Bicycle? Fifty bucks will get you from A to B with no gas and very little upkeep. Want something a little faster? Moped or perhaps an all electric scooter for you crunchy granola types (think of the coal burning power plant where the juice comes from, sheesh, you can't win). They range between one thousand and two thousand bucks. Getting the picture? Of course, if you want to look like a horses ass who paid alot of money to do so, then by all means, grab yourself a Segway. That's me laughing at you as you wheel by. What I think this comes down to though, is that the people buying these things are the type who buy a computer based on how it looks, damn the price and damn the performance. Man, I buy some old Macintosh computers and stick some wheels on them. Maybe Dean Kamen will want a peice of this action. Perhaps that would be a good topic for discussion, how many of you who are interested the Segway Human Transporter (snort) also own Apple products? Please feel free to send me angry emails defending Mr. Kamens concept vehicle. :)

  7. Difficult to answer. on What Makes Great Science Fiction? · · Score: 1

Its such a subjective question. Especially since there are so many different types of SciFi styles. Hard SciFi, Cyberpunk, Space Opera, etc... One person's masterpiece is anothers eye rolling schlock. Just think of someone who digs on Arthur C. Clarke giving an opinion of Star Trek or vice versa. As well, should we take into consideration the usually deleterious effects that franchising can have on what was once a respectable SciFi series. Like Dune used to be before Herbert's son and Hollywood decided to make some quick cash. Or the latest and embarassing additions to Star Wars (I swear Lucas has something wrong with him). Should this tinkering with respectable material count towards it? Its apples and oranges for the most part. I love Philip Jose Farmers World of Tiers series, but I also have a real thing for Gibson's Sprawl series and Dick's dysfunctional, paranoiac worlds. Do I find Heinlein and Zelanzy to be authors of uninteresting (being diplomatic here) pulp stories? Yes. Do I still have a thing for Tolkien and Herbert after the bastardizations of their respective sons? Sure why not, but the meddling has tainted the work of their fathers? All IMHO of course. S.

Firefly sucks. Talk about your lame excuses for a Sci Fi show, you can almost hear the gears mashing in the head of the network exec who thought this one up. What I want is something more like Farscape, where not everyone is pretty to look at and where they have realistic arguements instead of always screaming at each other. And the cowboy motif?!?! Jeeeesus! Lame or what. If you want to lament the passing of a great sci fi show, then lament the passing of Farscape. Production value, great script writing and a believeable yet totally alien setting instead of models playing cowboys and indians.

That's all great and everything, and the jukebox3 can to it too. But I've listened to both. Apple sent one to an online magazine editor that I know for him to review, and then conveniently 'forgot' about the device, leaving it in his care. (Whatever you want to call that). The iPod's sound is flat, almost tinny at time. When I listened to the same mp3 file on the Jukebox it sounded better even before I flicked the equalizer on. Then it rocked the house.

There is no FM tuner (who cares) and the digital recording ability is built in. You need a microphone tho. Other than that everything else is accessible in the same menu list as the playback features.

As I mentioned a little while ago, I've cracked mine terrifyingly well onto a hard subway platform a couple of times (I now use the carrying case) and it didn't even faze the thing. Although its face plate did pop off. It didn't even skip a beat in the music.

  14. Re:SB1394? on Another iPod Competitor · · Score: 1

As for the question of the Nomad Jukebox 3's user interface, rest assured that it has been improved over that of the original or even that of the Jukebox 2. With the inclusion of a combination Scrolling/selecting wheel/button on the side, you can now select tracks from their source file (album/genre/etc...) and dump it into either a main 'Now Playing' playlist and then turned into a new playlist, or you can dump it into the pre-existing playlist of you choice. The Jukebox isn't perfect, but I do think that it will be the iPod slayer. It is a very solid peice of technology, both in its architecture and its physical design. I've had it pop out of my pocket a couple of times while running to catch a subway train and had it smack into the hard terazzu floor. After getting over my initial heart failure I've plugged it back in both times and found it humming along smoothly, not even skipping a beat in the music. I'm very happy with my purchase of it and highly recommend it to others. S3p.

  15. Re:How long before Apple gives up? on Another iPod Competitor · · Score: 1

I was in the market for an MP3 player three or four months ago and the two contenders were the Apple iPod and the Nomad Jukebox 3. Jukebox was cheaper, had more features and the sound was head and shoulders above that of the iPod. Not only that, it has an equalizer built in that uses Creatives EAX technology and after spending $150 (Canadian) more on a set of Speakers, I have replaced my home stereo with my Jukebox. Something I never thought I'd be able to do. Now what I'm waiting for is a hacker culture to grow up around the Jukebox so that I can start putting it to even more use. Another thing that may interest some of you out there, the Jukebox's software doesn't come with any of that ridiculous copy protection that that the iPods does. So you can install the software to as many computers as you want. Being able to give and then get 20 gigs of data in a matter of minutes ROCKS the house. I've done that with several friends so far and it sure beats doing it over a modem or using P2P.
