I bought one of these when they first came out and have had no problems.
it won't use memory cards until they're reformatted
Memory cards that I had from when I had a PS2 way back when worked fine. I've used cards on both my min-ps2 and my friends full size back and forth with no problems.
it won't accept the PS2 hard drive This is true.
it won't accept the network adapters that the old PS2 system used Seeing as how it has a network adapter built in, why would you want to use a different one?
it breaks easily I guess if you drop it from a standing position, since it's made of plastic you may shatter the case. If you hit it with a hammer you may get the same result. If you treat it right, then you shouldn't have any issues... but then again I've never had an issue with a broken console... other than I did have an early N64 that Conker wouldn't play on... but it wasn't really "broken"... jut not compatible for some reason with that one game.
it overheats easily due to the absence of a cooling fan What would cause it to overheat? They took the fan out because they also took out the power supply which is what had been causing the overheating issues in the larger models. Those did have a fan, and they would still overheat on occasion. Since the new smaller units don't have anything that gets real hot, they have no need for a fan.
This sounds like crap people would spout off who don't even own one of the newer units. The only real issue I've come across, and it's one that I don't care about because I wouldn't have bought a hard drive anyway, is the lack of support for the hard drive. Supposedly Sony is working on a solution... possibly an external usb drive or something but I have no use for an hd so I don't care if they release one or not.
Perhapse even adopt the AMD-64 as people have reported in the past but its very unlikely.
People are still talking about Apple using AMD chips? Are you nuts?!?!!? Why the hell would Apple want to go backwards? Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the G5 processor kick the shit out of the competition? That's what Steve Jobs says anyway...
And how would this allow IBM and Apple to boost the PPC system? Is there anything preventing them from doing that now? I think they are working on that as fast as they can, since it's already in their best interest to scale up the technology. I do agree that this would be a great merger though.
Some of the questions are pretty obvious however. When I pulled my wifes it said that she had a mortgage account that was opened back in 2001 and it wanted to know who this was with and what the monthly payment amount was. I chose none of the above for both because she rents an apartment. Anyone who knows her would know that and could have easily chosen the correct answers.
The question I was asked when I pulled my own file was a much better question and I actually had to think a minute about it. It was about a car loan that I had for about a year back in '97. Would have been nice if they could have asked me about something just a bit more recent. I couldn't remember the exact monthly payment amount so I guessed what I thought would be pretty close and got lucky. Someone else could have done the same, but the part about who was the loan with should have kept prying eyes out of my info so I feel secure with the system.
Manuals are just FAR superior to automatics in every way possible.
I can think of one way... convenience. My Ford Explorer was a manual and I hated it. It served no purpose other than to annoy me. So a manual gets better gas mileage... so what? If I wanted great gas mileage I wouldn't drive an SUV in the first place.
In a situation like what this guy had, I would rather have a manual... I'd also rather have an older vehicle that doesn't have a crap load of electronics. You just don't hear of this sort of thing happening to an older vehicle...
Most African Americans are against gay marriage (more than whites)
And you're backing this up how? I'm not saying that you are wrong, I'm just wondering if you have anything to prove this on or if you're just making it up as you go.
I think the two issues are very similar.
You have the right to get married, but unless its a man-woman relationship, it is not a marriage.
is the same as:
You have the right to vote but unless you are a man, you are not a person and only people can vote. Get a clue. (back when women were not allowed to vote)
Black people were not fighting for just one right like gays are now. They had to fight for almost all of their rights so in that sense the two are different. However on a right by right basis, they are exactly the same. Blacks were not allowed to marry whites and men are not allowed to marry men (or women marry women). The end result will be the exact same... given enough time, the gay marriage issue will come to a head and be resolved. Then finally homosexuals will have equal rights, as they should now, and we can begin to forget about this mess.
The problem is larger than just the gay marriage issue. We need to think long and hard about what exactly we want our government to do. We need to define the governments function and then elect people who will do only that. In my opinion the government has no business telling us who we can marry. If a male wishes to marry a male, so be it. If a female wishes to marry a female, that's fine. If a group of however many people want to have a weddding and get married, that is their business. Just because you or I wouldn't do something doesn't mean that other people shouldn't be able to.
We need a much smaller government and we need to learn how to take care of ourselves.
My question to the candidates:
What should be the role of our government and how can we limit the government to only this?
I think the founding fathers thought they had taken care of things like the government telling us who we can and can't marry when they defined our rights... they attempted to ensure that we would control our government rather than the other way around but unfortunately things didn't work out how they envisioned.
Your thinking in terms of how things are now. 10 years ago Linux wasn't what it is today. It has grown a lot since Linus first thought it up and while Apple hasn't had that kind of growth, they have never before had a great line of products like they do right now. They are for the first time (in my opinion) able to compete on several fronts.
Computer hardware... the G5 stacks up nicely against the competition. It may or may not be the fastest available but it's for sure right there with AMD and Intel. Apple says their chips are the fastest and I haven't seen anything to prove that they aren't but either way, they are damn close if they aren't equal or better.
Computer software... OS X is what OS 8 was supposed to be. Apple finally has an operating system that is respectable and has a lot of features that you can't find on competing products. When is the last time there was anything else as mature as Windows? Linux is close in a lot of respects but neither KDE or Gnome are there yet. OS X is there and it's moving forward quickly. What will OS X offer when Longhorn finally rolls out?
Besides their two main areas of computer hardware and software Apple has had a few other winners, namely the iPod. Sure there are alternatives that are cheaper and arguably better but you can't deny that Apple has been selling the shit out of their iPods. Between that and the iTMS, they have a winning combination that so far nobody else has been able to match. Apple may not be at the top forever in this arena, but they are there now and doing a great job.
I agree that there still isn't a whole lot available for Macs in stores like CompUSA but I think over the next few years that is going to change. I know quite a few people who recently bought their first Macs. Some people are switching and everyone I know that has switched, loves their new machine. More and more people are making the switch and I don't see anything coming out of Redmond that's going to change this anytime soon.
So give it some time and think of what things may be like in a year or five. With OS X you get the power of FreeBSD with the ease of use Apple is known for. Add in the powerful hardware that Apple is shipping these days and you have a very nice setup that is going to get a lot stronger in the market place.
I've never seen any reason for non-millionnaires to vote with the Republican party.
I'm a Republican and I'm not a millionaire. I'm pro-gun and pro-life. That's two reasons to vote Republican. I also want lower taxes and smaller government. While Bush has made things worse on the smaller government front, I don't see Kerry talking about how he's going to change that. And what does Bush have to do with this anyway?
Microsoft knows that they can get away with this as far as the law is concerned. They also think that consumers won't care and I'd bet that's the case. We can sit back and talk all we want about how WE won't buy any of this crap but I still know people who love IE so I don't see a mass boycott of these products. MS is going to produce whatever they want and people will buy it because it's made by MS. Sure some will switch but lets be realistic.
It's funny that.9.3 always told me that there were no updates available when in fact there were... now.10 tells me there are when in fact there are not. WTF?
When I first installed it said there were 4 avail and it installed those but it still says those 4 are avail and need to be installed... not sure if it will show any other ones if other ones become avail. I also noticed that by manually clicking update on each extensions I was able to find two that it had missed when it did it's auto-check.
I think the biggest problem with the update feature is that a lot of extensions are not on the update site so when it does its check, it doesn't find anything. If everyone would list their extensions on the correct site, then the update feature would at least have a fighting chance... but either way it still just a bit buggy.
but it ignores any attempt to make the search box bigger
At least I'm not the only one. I upgraded yesterday and then spent close to two hours trying to get the damn search box back to the size it was with.9.x but no luck. I really wish you could just right click the search box and set the properties for it. Would be so much easier.
I think now is the best time to let these back into circulation. The terrorists on 9/11 weren't using these... they were using box cutters to gain access to planes... so maybe what we should ban are planes... and box cutters...
Actually, Blockbuster has a thing called Movie Pass where you rent a movie and keep it for as long as you want. I often rent stuff before I'm ready to watch it... that way when I am ready, I have the movie at home and I don't need to stop by the video store. This works especially well for things like new releases when they first come out. You rent it when it's in stock so you don't have to worry about it being out when you are ready to watch it.
About Six Feet Under... you can rent it on dvd. I have the movie pass at Blockbuster and I watch most of the shows I like on dvd.
It's also available on On Demand if your cable company (if you have cable) offers that. I watch Dead Like Me each week on On Demand... it's available a day or two after the new episode airs.
Between renting shows and On Demand, I don't find much use for TiVo so I haven't bought one yet.
For years, this meant I watched crap. Now that I have a TiVo, I can watch good shows.
You mean:
For years, this meant I watched crap. Now that I have a TiVo I can watch the same crap, but whenever I want to, not just when the networks want me to.
Actually this isn't true. My mom didn't have health insurance when she found out that she had a liver tumor. The state (California) paid for the surgery. Just because you don't have insurance and can't afford to pay doesn't mean they'll let you die. They aren't barbarians.

It's not a really expensive camera... was only a couple hundred bucks, but I don't really want to replace it due to it getting wet and shorting out or getting broken on a ride. I also don't like having to worry about losing it or getting it stolen. If I had been able to rent a digital camera while I was there, I would have done that instead of using my own. The quality may have not been quite as good but @ 2 megapixel they would have been good enough.
I wonder if they will offer versions with larger capacity. If you could rent extra memory cards, that would be a bonus. I don't want to have to carry around 10 cameras with me... with mine I had a nice large memory card so I didn't have to swap it the entire trip and the spare I brought was tiny and fit in my little camera bag easily. Fitting 10 cameras into a camera bag would be a bit more difficult, not to mention trying to take all of those on a ride with you. So maybe cameras with quite a bit more capacity for those of us who want to rent one and have it last several days worth of pictures.
if the machine isn't up to spec
Umm... last time I checked the G5's had some pretty damn nice specs. I don't know how you can possibly think Apple is deperate considering their latest machines. I agree that they were for a long time but Apple is on the rebound these days. They have killer machines and can finally take a moment to do something flashy like this.
It would be like installing a device that sits on top of your TV and scrolls advertisements while you watch shows
There are times when this would be nice. For example, say you are watching a cooking show and the chef uses some gadget that you really like. As it is, you may not have caught the beginning of the program when he/she told about the product so now you're in the dark and you can either go online and try to find it, or hope that you see it in a store. If you had ads going all the time, there could be ads for the stuff used in the show.
I would rather have it setup so that I could hit a button on my remote that would pull up internet links to the various items and somehow send those to my computer... maybe it could email them to me or something. Then later I could pull up the email and use the links to order the products that I liked from the show. It could also include recipes from the show... which I think if done correctly could be a great time saver for viewers of cooking shows.
I'm sure other shows could bennefit from something like this as well... car shows or fishing/hunting shows come to mind.
Usually small investors can't get in on hot ipo's because the larger investors will buy all of the shares available. Then they immediately sell them for a large profilt. Google has done two things by going with an auction format... first, the little guy who has some money can get in on this just like anyone else. The playing field is a bit more level. Second, Google has found a way to make a killing on selling shares of their company, rather than the first investors through the door profiting so much.
It's not like this has come about suddenly. There has been speculation of a Google IPO for quite some time and if you wanted in, you should have been saving up. If you did your homework and put some money aside, Google offering the shares through an auction would probably help you to get the shares immediately whereas with a regular IPO system you wouldn't have been able to buy any until after someone else had gotten them and the price had went way up (most likely).
And what is wrong with Google Corp profiting the most on this? After all it is their company. It was/is their ideas and work that brought about their success and I think they should be the ones to profit from that, not the lucky few investors that can get the IPO shares immediately... what Google is doing is a good thing and most people seemed to think so until the price of shares was announced. Now everyone is crying about the shares being too expensive yet they probably wouldn't have been able to buy them any cheaper if Google had done things the normal way, unless of course they know someone with access and some clout.
I'm not sure who we need to be blaming for the madness. The NFL wants to make as much as possible in every way possible. After all they are in this to make a profit. They also have very high costs. Stadiums aren't cheap, although in a lot of cases it's not the teams or the NFL that build or pay for the stadiums. The players and coaching staff aren't cheap. But you don't see any teams going bankrupt do you? Between the outrageous ticket prices, contract with DirectTV and contracts with networks for tv coverage, the NFL is making money hand over fist.
Why then do they screw over the fans? My brother has DirectTV and he tapes games and sends them to my dad so that my dad can watch them. He uses his pvr and then burns them to dvd. How is that any different than taping something on your vcr and loaning it to a friend? Or taping it with your pvr and then throwing it up on whatever p2p app tickles your fancy? It's not like you can go to the local video store and buy the game on dvd.
Some TV Shows are the same way... I have a pretty large collection of movies that I have purchased. Some on DVD and a lot on VHS. I've also downloaded a few shows off of the web. Scrubs (no dvd avail yet) and Family Guy (before it was avail in the US on dvd) are the two main ones. I would have gladly bought them on dvd but couldn't.
And now I find myself wanting to replace all of my vhs movies with dvd versions. I don't particularly like vhs. The quality is lacking and some of my tapes are beginning to show their age. It would be nice if I could trade in my vhs copies for dvd copies... with a small fee for the cost of the materials or something. Maybe the old movie and $2 to cover costs... but that will never happen. They won't let you upgrade to new media and they don't even want you to copy your vhs tapes to dvd. If you do that, they aren't making any money. So instead you should go and buy all of the movies you already own so that you can have them on the media that you want them on. And 5 or 10 years from now when the media shifts once again.
Some claim that we aren't buying the movies, we are licensing the content... if that's the case then why can't we move that content to whatever media we want it on? If we record something on Tivo and then want to move it to a laptop so we can take it with us for a long flight or whatever, what is wrong with that?

it breaks easily
I guess if you drop it from a standing position, since it's made of plastic you may shatter the case.

Yea there is no way you can fit 4 cd's on to a single dvd... wait... what?
I can think of one way... convenience. My Ford Explorer was a manual and I hated it. It served no purpose other than to annoy me. So a manual gets better gas mileage... so what? If I wanted great gas mileage I wouldn't drive an SUV in the first place.
In a situation like what this guy had, I would rather have a manual... I'd also rather have an older vehicle that doesn't have a crap load of electronics. You just don't hear of this sort of thing happening to an older vehicle...
I've seen it... and I'm going to buy Fahrenhype 9/11 as soon as it comes out on the 5th. Will be interesting to see the non-bullshit side.
