Apple makes fat too much money on hardware to make OS X availble for X86.. As a business (which Apple is since alot of us just seem to think they are in it for the fun !! duh !) this makes perfect sense.
You want our hardware, you get our software ! You want our software you have to get our hardware !
I work for a pretty well loved company by the technical community in general (we are not looked upon as an evil empire). I find that this makes a lot of difference; I'm not the evil consultant who walks in and gets paid obscene amounts of money.
On the other hand, people that work for companies that are looked upon as "evil" empires, i.e. M$, IBM global services, etc, usually get little respect from the people they attempt to help even if they are good technical consultants (I see this all the time at client sites). Their companies image really casts a dark shadow on how they are treated.
My 0.2c....
Since Windows Boxes Crash all the time they should be considered a health hazard ! As a Windows user if my windows box repeatedly crashes causing data loss all the time, I'm more prone to a nervous break down, or I may end up getting into road rage (as per the article) and run over someone with my car.
I guess Linux/Unix/Mac users are more psychologically stable then, since they are less prone to this kind of trauma.
Wouldn't it be funny if windows users filed a class action suite against M$ because Windows crashes led them to psychological trauma which may in turn lead them to harming other innocent people!
I've had to work on a project in Saudi Arabia and the gov. there takes a "very active" role in regulating the internet !! The results:
- All ISPs have to go through a single proxy that filters all communication.
- Sites that contain sexually explicit material, political views opposing those of the "Royal" family , and sites that has anything reported that is negative about the country are all BANNED !
It's kind of brainwashing mixed with some serious censorship and information tapping.
Send an email through this ONE and ONLY proxy that bad mouths the "Royal" family and no one will see you again ! EVER !
DRM, Copy Protection, etc are ways various industries try to protect a business model that is not inline with the direction of technology and information exchange trends.
I think there is so much effort put in these schemes to protect this obsolete model (and so much effort put by hackers) that eventually leads to a lot of loss of creativity. It's a war that should not be fought at all.
What the media people have to realize is that no form of protection (on media) or harassment, etc is going to protect them on the long run. Instead they should try to think of a different value models that make people want to pay for their services.
Do you have any idea how many reels Pixar goes through for every hire they make? To put it bluntly, yes, the people who work at Pixar are better than you.
hmmmm, "Better" is a very elastic word:-)
I believe that IQ comes in lots of flavors and while I acknowledge that some people are more comfortable in certain areas than others, that doesn't mean that they are "Better" all across !
This "everyone's a winner" shit is for the birds.
I completely disagree with you. When it comes to economical entities you're right, but human beings , NO. In the "human achievment" world one should approach competition with an "abundance mentality" because although not every "Win" is the same one can find his niche "Win" and be satisfied that he tried his best and accomplished to his potential.

Have you considered that maybe you look at yourself as "mediocre" because you have not been given the chance to tap into your potential?
The people at Pixar, or any other great company are not "better" than you, they are people that push their limits everyday and don't settle for a self fulfilling prophecy of being mediocre which most of us settle with. If every person looked with awe at great achievers there would be no more great achievements!
What Pixar does, as a company, is that it realizes that the best in people comes out only when the right environments are created and made available; hence this company continues to dazzle us with eye candy every release.
Pixar is not doing this because they have the Smartest people!!! Look around you, there are companies out there that have so much more talent than Pixar, yet they don't reach their potential because they treat their talented employees like machines. They seek "efficiency" with their employees, but the fact is with people you can only get "effectiveness" because people are not machines and they are never going to be efficient. Pixar's env. Helps their employees to be "effective" Your companies polices, timesheets, and big brother mentality is trying to make an "efficient" machine outta you. That simply doesn't work on the long run and leads to the mediocre, and the "its just a job" culture.
I watched "Volcanoes of the Deep Seas" with my son about 4 months ago and I have no idea how a movie like that could be offensive to anyone!!
If movies like these are offensive to people then I think the very existence of the western culture should be offensive (which it is to some, as we all know) !!
According to this line of thought, Stephen Hawkings, Ed Witten, Darwin, and even Albert Einstein should all be considered infidels exactly the same way Galileo and Copernicus were viewed 100s of years ago.
Did we really evolve as a society?
"Linus is a good developer, but is a terrible engineer," said Cox. "I'm sure he would agree with that."
Isn't the fact the Linus insists on having maintainable Kernel code, as opposed to quickly fixing and hacking, a sign of him being a mature engineer? I don't understand what Cox is talking about.
Can someone please tell me why I would wanna Skew my windows the way they are shown in the screen shots ?
I can't seem to find any practical use for all these features...
You want our hardware, you get our software ! You want our software you have to get our hardware !
Self feeding revenue loop...

They can just sit at the door of the airport and scan everybody comming in and out ! Without you even knowing so you won't report it !

Is this the role they envision ??
