I have just recently had a long conversation on this very debatable topic. Frankly I see no justifiable reason for the home user to do so, and even less reason for the 'gamer'. I do think the idea has a limited utility in the business market, but that about sums it up. I commonly upgrade my hardware every 3-6 years (I have had 5 computers since 1990, but the fifth is only a few months old. If I am using Word 5.x, I have paid for it, and I receive the utility I need, why should I continue to pay for something 12 years old?
It is also a part of many credit cardholder agreements. So if the thief signs the card, the signatures match the fraudulent purchases, and they recover the card, then you a liable for the purchases.
I spent five years of my life in the Luggage and Leather Goods businesss and I have some opinions.
There is always a limit to what you feel comfortable spending, but I have seen damned few bags that come even close to the powerbook bag by Brenthaven. USD$149 is not cheap, but it is not a four hundred dollar bag from Tumi or Hartmann either. I would never gamble a $3k laptop on a cheap bag, I can't afford the risk. Buy them at the Apple Store or direct from brenthaven.
Now that the technology is actually ironed out, that people are starting to understand what the technology is for, and products are actually becoming affordable the sky is falling. These are probably the same people who blew sunshine up any available orifice when slashdotters were all early-adopting.
Full Disclosure: I work for a verizon wireless agent. I do not work for verizon wireless.
The PTT service will be a plus for some customers and a negative for others. The PTT with verizon will give you access to the largest cellular network in the US. This will eventually mean you will get more access with VzW PTT than with anyone else. Right now the service is limited to those people who have it, but that will change rapidly, espescially when number portability becomes an issue. The V60p has an extended battery available, which should give you 180 hours standby and 6 hours talk time. The v60p is also much smaller than most nextel ptt phones. There are trade offs, however the largest wireless network in north america, unlimited ptt, free nights and weekends, and long distance on every call makes it a winner.
The internet has changed almost everything about how we use, view, find, and explore information. Mas it made things easier or more difficult? I doubt either. You still have to understand how to formulate the information you find, and deduce conclusions from it. You still have to present it in a correct format. You lose a huge social value in the college experience though, and that may well be too bad. College computer labs used to be 'places to go', they used to be communities as well as places to work. Now they are empty. SO yes, for every loss is a gain.
this was too lite to be called a review (in my opinion).
Personally I felt that Mac OS X: The Missing Manual was a good entry to mid-level book.
my two cents.
that Apple should model it's business plan after a company that has declining market share and serious cash flow issues. That is Palm. I own and love a Palm, and I still wouldn't buy the stock. A company with a valuation so low that an IPO won't make it in today's marketplace.
Apple relinquishing hardware control would be the death knell of the company.
I get what I consider to be an incredible amount of value from.mac subscription. I get antivirus, some free games, a great webmail and email service, and things keep getting added.
What exactly do you expect for USD$100 per year, and what makes alternative more efficient for you?
...you don't think anyone will do an illegal port, do you?
Frankly I think this is a hail mary pass by Redmond to make Windows Media more popular. They can't say that is what they are doing, but if they release codecs for Linux, that will be the result.

(I haven't upgraded to Panther) Find out if the Fax recognizes a distinctive ring. If it does the use the distinctive ring number for your faxes.

When can I get one of those cool strip readers for my Palm? I also need a cassette drive!
I use both and forward my email and use reply to. I also have pointers for my website. YMMV.
