  1. Looking forward to it. on 8K TVs Are Coming, But Don't Buy the Hype (engadget.com) · · Score: 1
    Sounds awesome, keep it coming.

Maybe if the resolutions keep running away from bandwidth rates we could have one or hopefully two changes in the market.

The first is do away with streaming only. Fine keep your copy protect nonsense, but let me download the content or at least buffer it to watch at my leisure on any device. I get tired of not being able to watch anything if the network is being flaky.

The obvious second item is no more excuses, but GB connections should be basic service not something we might get in another decade or two. Same goes for wireless bring the 5G online already.

  2. Easy enough to fund UBI, fire all government employees that work on any social or welfare program (that includes public schooling, social security, Medicare), cancel said social and welfare programs, take the budgets for those and make them the budget of the new UBI program, automate the program so there are only a few IT workers to manage the system, make sure you filter out ALL illegals & criminals, and pay out the system through direct deposit, with an annual "are you still alive and can speak English" check up.

Oh wait you wanted all those programs AND UBI?! Well aren't you a silly fucker.

The truly hard part is going to get all the people currently sucking off those welfare and social programs to give up what they get in exchange for a lower amount that they have to share with all of those (young singles w/out kids) not currently qualified to receive aid.

Also if you are going to become a ward of the state, then you should have the same voting rights as any other child or mentally incompetent (none). Also if you can't score at least an 85 on an IQ test you can't get a license to have children. Think that won't happen, wait until the government becomes your only source of income. It'll be pretty easy to get that law passed.

No longer an issue. I simply refuse to live anywhere it is not available.

Now if I had to do so I'll do what I did when deployed to the desert. I brought my kindle fire with me, downloaded everything I wanted to watch when I could find a hotspot that wasn't being overused, and simply gave up on all the rest. You tend to read ALOT of books, limit your surfing to buying things, and use IM or email a lot more instead of video or voice calls.

This situation is exactly why I despise streaming without buffering/downloading. You can get away it with your Kindle, but things like online videos or say Netflix/Fire TV it is annoying that you can't download it to watch on the TV>

Say cut the patent length in half it is transferred or companies above a certain size may not hold more than a set number of patents.

That'll keep them from building up a war chest of patents to smack down their smaller competitors.

  11. That is quaint, you actually still think academia has much left to offer the world. They come up with a study that might change a single digit percentage point in terms of creative output and somehow that is the excuse why so much can't be done.

I guess a certain kind of person just needs excuses to make it through their day.

  12. Lol you have all the answers. People are different so it couldn't possibly work right?

I've got 20 years of shift work that says otherwise. I've heard all the excuses and as a younger man and given all the excuses as to why a they couldn't possibly be expected to be productive before 10am. 95% of it is habit and unplugging early enough to get into bed. Sure the other 5% just says your preference is to sleep in and work the evening shift. Doesn't help you much if you have to be at work and moving at 6am.

The top three that screw it up for people. Coffee/soda in the evening because water sucks, staying up all night drinking, or being glued to a device to the wee hours watching videos/movies, wasting time, or grinding just one more level. Those are the ones that got me in the most trouble as well as my underlings.

  13. Yeah the first year out was a trip. (I was in for 20). I retired in May so I had the entire summer completely off like I was back in grade school. The day is really freaking long when you wake up at 6am and all you have to do all day is take the dog for a walk and maybe mow the grass. Caught up on 10 tv series, read close to 50 books and managed to finish 2-3 long video games in three months.

Almost done with a BA in Mechanical Engineering I was so bored. This is the last free summer before it is back to the really, real world and I have to get an adult job.

  14. Allot of it is based on your habits.

A little exercise and cut back on the chemical (caffeine) and digital stimulants (as well as the good old fashion things called books, more than one has kept me up all night), its amazing how early you can get to bed and fall asleep. That goes along with a lot of other bad habits such as procrastination (staying up to the wee hours to get your homework done or get ready for the day tomorrow) and many other.

So yes it is actually a moral virtue.

The fact that you can do it after 40 just means you've either finally figured it out and/or your body just can't keep up the pace anymore.

  15. Wasn't it all the European car companies the ones getting their pants sued off for cheating on the emissions tests the past 5 years? Volkswagen has half a million cars sitting out in the desert they can't sell because of that. I'd take it with a grain of salt that they are doing better than the US.

  16. by Anonymous Coward on Friday March 30, 2018 @04:58PM (#56355385) The day of the faggoty Prius is over, bring back the muscle cars!"

Where have you been? You have more choices of high performance cars than ever before. Exactly when in history could you buy a Mustang/Camaro that you could set the cruise control to 125mph and just cruise smoothly down the highway at 20+mpg?

Not to mention motorcycles. My not particular fast FZ-1 street bike does 0-60 in 2.9s and tops out around 185mph.

You are living the dream right now. On a plus if you crash a modern car you will actually have a good chance of surviving the wreck uninjured.

  17. I'd like to see them ditch the café ratings all together. Always seemed stupid to take the average of a fleet for economy. Its a scam in there somewhere to keep smaller businesses from building trucks to compete with the big players since they'd have to obey the fleet averages once they got to a decent size.

Personally I am done buying gasoline engine vehicles. I've got my last SUV and motorcycle in 2011. I'll be picking up an electric car if I have to commute more than 10 miles. These days I mostly bicycle and only use the vehicles when I need to haul stuff or go a longer distance.

I'm waiting for someone to come out with an electric 4x4 truck or SUV. (Most of the garbage they sell these days are neither, they just look pretty with no actual capability under the plastic and fake bumpers) and are way overpriced for what they are.) Then I'll pick up another.

Tesla needs to hurry up and come out with one, though if the Semi ever got below $100K I would be interested. Road warrior it up and use it as an angry daily driver.

  18. It is funny there are companies that have figured it out, but most people seem to hate to work for them. SpaceX and Amazon being probably the most obvious examples. They work around the clock, but at the same time run their people into the ground. They do get fantastic results, so I will give them that.

You can also join the US military if you don't like being awake during the day. I worked night shift for the first 10 years and only saw the sun on the drive home.

  19. Being worthless has more to due to the fact that they won't crawl into bed before 1 am if given the choice than the mild impact it has on "creativity"

Most jobs out there have almost no creativity involved in them at all. Those that do it is very limited, say the first 10% and the last 5% when you are forced to problem solve in the beginning and troubleshoot why it isn't working right at the end. The other 85% is all about not being a lazy turd and just cranking out some work.

There is something to be said though for having a swings and night shift to cater to those that can't be bothered to move over to the day shift. It gives people a bit more freedom and cuts the underutilization of infrastructure that normally sits idle.

  20. You are spot on.

My advice for those that can't seem to get the message is don't join the military snowflakes. I had to be up by 5am and on the road to get to work by 0630. For a 0700 show time. Why a half hour early? Because I was in charge and had to get there before my troops did who were expected to show up early as well.

As the saying goes "If you aren't 15 minutes early then you are 10 minutes late"

So what did that mean for bedtime? I crawled into bed as close to 8pm as possible or just had to deal with 5-7 hours of sleep if I didn't.

Oh also you don't go home till either the work/mission is done or you are relieved. 10-16 hour days are common. I worked more than a few 24 hour days because the night shift guy (my replacement) had a family emergency and didn't show up for work. Those planes won't fix/launch themselves.

My favorite were my youngsters that just couldn't seem to get the concept of how an alarm clock works. I'd send a couple of my troops to go drag their ass out of bed, and I do mean drag. (We had the keys to your door in the dorms.) Christmas was when one of the SNCOs got to go do it. Nothing like waking up to a cranky old SNCO who made it to work 4 hours earlier than your lazy ass.

I did feel pity for them. I had the same problems as a teen/twenty something, but the best advice is get over that shit real quick if you want to keep your job or bare minimum not be treated like an idiot, snot nosed kid by your coworkers and supervision.

You still wont be able to play twitch games in real time globally, but even with say within 2-5 hops it will definitely expand the player base, not to mention anywhere internet would be revolutionary on so many levels.

They are well aware that a 300 mile orbit is horrible on gas millage and that the satellites will either use a lot of fuel. I think their strategy is to put up as cheap as possible units that just deorbit eventually. They don't have to sink a lot of cash in the satellite and just constantly upgrade the network with the latest best bang for the buck units. The fun part of this conversation is they are talking about deploying the same system around the Moon and Mars.

Speed of light in a vacuum 186,000 miles per second
Speed of light in a fiber optic cable. 128,000 miles per second
Speed of electricity is much slower

Really what is slowing things down is how many network devices are between you and what you want to be connected two. Yeah this wont beat a local network in your house, but if you are trying to connect to something on the other side of the world it'll beat the pants off terrestrial networks for ping. Seeing as most places outside of major cities data connections are overly expensive and suck ass, even a high ping connection would be awesome.

At that low of an orbit they seem to be going for the equivalent of "el cheepo" Wi-Fi routers since they don't need to reach very far and in that low the orbit will decay pretty quickly once fuel runs out (if they even bother with thrusters to keep down the costs). Seeing as they are launching all the time, they'll just be kicking out a large number of throw away satellites each time with the latest, best bang for the buck hardware on board.

The real plus for this is also being able to tell your State approved monopoly local internet/phone/cable providers to go eat a giant bag of shit covered dicks and then switch to SpaceX service.
