I've worked since 15 as a Gen-Y'er, and most of my friends have done the same and/or are just getting out of college right now (I had to work, because I fall in that gap that the government says my parents should pay for college, but my parents won't). But my friends are more tech-oriented, and are generally starting to be successful in their field of choice. I can't say much about my other "peers", but then I have no idea what people my age were like 20 or even 10 years ago.
The basic problem that *I* found was what is basically the elimination of entry-level tech jobs. No one wants to train you, and I've been passed over for many jobs because I don't have a degree (yet), and 3 years doing the exact same job is apparently less valuable than someone right out of college with a resume filled exclusively with classes they have taken. I'm now working as a temp in a pretty good position, but its because I am very good with people and am hard to turn down in a face to face interview. There is no real bridge from the "kid" job at best buy fixing PCs to the "professional" job fixing the same PCs at a corporation. Well, there IS one, but its very small and very few end up being able to cross it.
Also when I was unemployed, it always amazed me what companies considered "entry level". All these 1st tier help desk jobs at $12 an hour (in the bay area) requiring 4 year degrees. I could've done that job when I was 16! What I got out of seeing all those jobs was that there are very very few companies who are willing to pay for quality workers.
If I were asked if I'd like to work in a positive and comfortable environment or get paid a tiny bit more a month, I'd choose the former (if it was at least a livable wage at first). Maybe THAT'S the difference between gen Y and the previous.
Wow, so you must've been paid under $600 rent then. At minimum $780 for a year for public transportation (assuming $3 a day). Thats $7980 just spent on rent and transportation. You have ~$4k left. I could see you eating ramen and salt for the entire year, but thats it.
I'm basing my rent at $600, because thats about as cheap as you can find right now in the bay area anywhere close to transportation, with a roomate. If I lived near work I could rent a studio for $1600 a month, in the crappy part of town. Which is about half of my monthly income.
The "newest" graphics card if you buy it right when it comes out is obsolete within 2 months. If you bought yours within this period, the 9600 was already out!
Well for one, 50 FPS average means that likely it will dip below 20 or 15 in some instances, which IS noticible. Also I said that the 50fps value is for "high" settings. "Very high" settings would require you to drop the resolution to maintain the same framerate most likely.
I see what you did there; you injected your own opinions on world religions and politics on me and then berated me for thinking about a solution that doesn't involve bombing.
As a poster further down the thread said, its far easier to get access to radioactive medical supplies that could create the same dirty bombs. You're getting paranoid about paranoia! The US is a HUGE country, and if someone is very dedicated to attacking us, they will eventually succeed (no matter how many phone calls are listened in on). What we can do is theorize what they are most likely to be able to do (transporting uranium for the purposes of a dirty bomb is WAY down the list), and try to stop the attacks from occurring while at the same time dealing with the problem that causes one to be lead to terrorist acts.
Well yes once you have the technology down. Just keep running it through more and more centrifuges. But I was under the impression that the amount of centrifuges or other enrichment processing machines had to multiply by a large amount in order to actually enrich to weapons grade. So yes if you can enrich reactor grade then you have the technology to make weapons, but do you have the infrastructure and more importantly the secrecy when there is such a large site dedicated to just such a process?
Reactor grade uranium is 3-4% Uranium-235 (the dangerous kind), and weapons grade uranium is 90% U-235. It takes an order of magnitude more equipment to reach even a crude weapon's level at 20% 235. It even says in the article that the uranium enrichment and processing won't be done on-site.
Aha! Just blame slashdot and their biased descriptions (though to be fair, I even googled their company and found no mention of such things). And look! Their device ran linux! Back off all, I'm pretty sure Linux bias still trumps Apple bias!
In all seriousness, maybe they do have a case then.
In order to be awarded a patent, a company must demonstrate that they will actually USE the patent for something other than litigation. I looked around and I didn't see a damn thing that ZapMedia has EVER done with any such patent (which was filed in 2000?) for even such a common sense application of content distribution. Its like patenting how to use a blender! "If you press liquify and then chop, Blendable's Inc. will sue the pants off of you!"
They don't even have a WEBSITE (besides this lovely info-less drivel) and they are awarded a patent for media distribution?!
times does C-net need to run the same story per year? It seems whenever they remember something else they come out with a new list (like once per month).
I took your advice (a few days ago actually) and tried installing Ubuntu. LiveCD didn't work. Alternate CD installed it but X wouldn't work. Recompiling X wouldn't work. Looked at forums and after 3 hours of trying to figure out what was wrong it appears that my hardware may be too new for Ubuntu.
Ubuntu loads now, but I can't actually log in because it boots me out a second later. I'm no expert, and I've no idea how to fix, and forums are useless. I wanted it to work; I wanted to think it might be ready for the desktop. Its not. At least Vista runs at all.
This is a good point. What if the UN or the US or the EU put out, say, a $100 BILLION reward for a complete cure for HIV/AIDS? Its not THAT much for a government, but its certainly a lot for any pharm company (Pfizer's net income for 2007 was 19 billion). If this happened would the pharm companies change anything in the way they researched HIV?
And lets hope that not too much research is completely screwed due to a change in a constant (though what experiments would need to take into account the diameter of the galaxy I do not know).
After the fact laws mean that if you are doing something, and then a law is passed making it an offense to do that something, you can't be charged with doing it before the law is passed. Doesn't sound like you know your legalese.
Most people employ rush tactics in WC3, but then say that it takes 1-2h to do a good game of supcom. Early harassment while you consolidate control of the map in SC can very much win you a game in the first 20 minutes.
All maphacking programs are currently fataling the game after the patch. This most likely has to do with the version number and not the programs itself, but it does kill off a few of the older MH programs that are no longer updated. I've used my lovely 32kb no-cd image for WC3 for a while, and it will be a chance to not have to have daemon tools running in the background all the time! (I have several legit CDs, I just don't like popping them in and out).

Method of transmission does not mean content of transmission.

50FPS at high settings with a resolution of 1920x1200. I'll bet it'll run decently on very high with 1280x1024.
It must be nice to know what the future holds. I'm curious how your internet connection is in your concrete/steel bunker 100 meters below the earth.
I used to be in the 645k range. Look at me now! Only 200 years before I'm in the triple digits!

I find it ironic that you're now getting modded down for this! (does -1 offtopic have a karma penalty?)

Now his GF can make YOUR playboys obsolete!

Edit: You're looking for an Amnesty Law.
